BANGKOK (NNT) - The government recently followed up on various quality-of-life missions in the northern provinces of Phayao and Lampang. Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan was briefed on state operations in the areas, where the focus is currently on narcotics suppression and the elimination of encroachments into protected forests and national parks. The deputy premier noted that he was satisfied with the government’s campaign to allow local residents to utilize areas of protected land and national parks for occupational purposes. At present, 58,000 rai of land are covered under the program, providing more than 14,300 residents with areas they can legally use for agricultural purposes. General Prawit urged officials from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, as well as other relevant authorities, to combine their efforts in addressing the forest encroachment issue, while also promoting career development programs for locals. Additionally, he instructed local governmental units to prepare for potential forest fires and PM2.5 issues during the upcoming dry season. Concerning narcotics suppression, he said it was important to focus on the strength of communities, especially among educational institutes, by promoting social attitudes against illicit drugs and addictive substances. Chart Pattana Kla Party Proposes Credit Sorting to Address Debt BANGKOK (NNT) - The Chart Pattana Kla Party is proposing the ‘Credit Sorting’ system to address chronic debt issues in Thailand. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Chart Pattana Kla Party is proposing the ‘Credit Sorting’ system to address chronic debt issues in Thailand. Korn Chatikavanij, Chart Pattana Kla party leader, made the proposal while explaining that it is more productive to remove the ‘blacklist’ system of National Credit Bureau Company Limited. He also said more Thais than ever are facing debt issues, especially given the current economic environment with higher living costs that have been exacerbated by the pandemic. Korn noted that the ‘Credit Sorting’ system will evaluate each individual’s financial status using his or her actual related information. The information includes utility bills, mobile phone bills, and other financial burdens, not limited to debts. He said the Credit Sorting system would prevent debtors from resorting to illegal loan providers. Korn added that introducing the new system and removing the blacklist system is a viable way to address the debt issue without needing any budget or abolishing the National Credit Bureau. According to the party, 5.5 million people are currently being blacklisted, 3.2 million of which received the status during the height of the pandemic. Korn said abolishing the blacklist system will allow banks to offer more loans at lowered costs and in a more impartial manner. Sarasin Bridge Love 2216 – new Thai film made with the backdrop of Phuket’s Sarasin Bridge A heart-wrenching true love story, “Sarasin Bridge Love 2216”, has now been adapted into a new film set to hit Thai cinemas this Friday. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1283777-sarasin-bridge-love-2216-–-new-thai-film-made-with-the-backdrop-of-phuket’s-sarasin-bridge/ -
A heart-wrenching true love story, “Sarasin Bridge Love 2216”, has now been adapted into a new film set to hit Thai cinemas this Friday. The film, directed by renowned southern Thai artist Ekkachai Srivichai, was officially unveiled at the Sarasin bridge in Tha Thatchai, at the northern tip of the island. The story, set in 1973 Phuket, follows the doomed romance between Baht bus driver Dam and the young and beautiful teaching student Gew. Despite their love for each other, their families opposed their relationship due to their differences in social status – a love story for the ages. The couple ultimately chooses to end their tragic love story by taking their lives by jumping off the Sarasin Bridge, tied together with a traditional Thai loinvcloth – forever. The themes of the film are similar to Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.” The 600 metre bridge has been built twice, first opened in 1967 and then a more modern and wider version in 2011. The older version of the bridge is now used as a pedestrian thoroughfare. (So the newer bridge had to be digitally removed for the film). Poem from the film (translated) When love is not decorated with petals, The beginning of the love story That comes from the power of love And the blending of society Thus, it leads to loss without return. Let’s take a trip back to February 22, 1973. The young couple tied themselves with Thai loincloth, then jumped off the Sarasin bridge. “Dam, a young man and a local bus driver and rubber farm worker, falls in love with a Teachers College student, Gew. Dam doesn’t earn much and lives ‘hand to mouth’ while Gew was born into a wealthier family. Of course Gew’s father believes that Dam’s love is not good enough for his daughter. Gew’s father dictated his daughter’s life and was very fussy about who she was hanging around with. He wanted Gew to be married with a more wealthy and monied suitor, not poor man like Dam. But Gew and Dam didn’t’ give up. They tried to Gew’s father understand about how much they loved each other. But the father was stubborn and failed to accept his daughter had fallen in love with a young man from a ‘lower class’. He would lock Gew inside the house, even verbally and physically abused her. Dam and Gew eventually used the bridge as the backdrop for their final farewell, as a couple in love. BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand has successfully defended its ASEAN Championship title following a 1-0 victory over Vietnam in the second leg of the final on Monday (16 Jan). The win at the Thammasat Stadium in Pathum Thani province gave team Thailand a 3-2 aggregate triumph against their Southeast Asian rivals. Theerathon Bunmathan, captain of the Thai team, scored with a stunning 24th-minute strike from distance, earning Thailand the spoils in front of their own fans and delivering a record-extending seventh regional crown. Theerathon has been one of Thailand’s stand-out performers throughout the tournament and capped another fine display with the winning goal. The 32-year-old started and finished the move that saw him receive possession from Adisak Kraisorn some 25 meters out before smashing a right-foot shot into the bottom corner of Dang Van Lam’s goal. Thailand won the biennial title last year in Singapore, beating Indonesia over two legs in the final after the competition was delayed by 12 months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With the away goals rule in operation, the Thai team went into the second leg with a narrow advantage after a 2-2 draw in Hanoi on Friday (13 Jan). Vietnam was hoping to give coach Park Hang-Seo a winning send-off, with the South Korean announcing that he would end his five-and-a-half-year stint in charge at the end of the tournament. Two boat operators in Pattaya filed a report at the Pattaya police station, accusing a gang of alleged taxi “gangsters” of beating them over “overlapping territory”. At 11:30 PM on January 15th, the victims, Mr. Somchai Thongdee, 40, and Mr. Kriengsak Tubtimtong, 39, reported their grievances to Pattaya police. The two said they were boat operators and they were attacked by a group of what they referred to as “taxi mafias” at a transit station in North Pattaya in the Naklua subdistrict of Banglamung district, Chonburi. Kriengsak told police he and Somchai went to peacefully settle down the long-lasting conflict about an overlapping territory to conduct business between them and the group of taxi drivers. The rival group, however, showed up in a group of more than 30 people, some armed with firearms, Kriengsak claimed. The group threatened to shoot him and Somchai and began beating them. Eleven baby turtles perish after eating plastic and garbage
snoop1130 posted a topic in Pattaya News
Eleven baby sea turtles have been found washed ashore in Sattahip last September, all ultimately died due to ingesting garbage. The turtles were found off the coast of Sattahip by marine officials. Thailand’s Department of Marine and Coastal Resources officers say that every turtle had plastic and other debris found in their stomachs, which “would have caused them severe pain and refusal to eat”. Plastic, waste and other pollution is an ongoing hazard for turtles and other marine life that once used to thrive in the Gulf of Thailand waters. The weak turtles passed away within three months of being discovered. Veterinarians suspect that the turtles may have been swept out to sea from nearby nesting grounds on Koh Khram or Koh Lan. The officials emphasised the importance of reducing the threat of garbage to these vulnerable creatures by not disposing of waste in the ocean or waterways leading to it. Baby turtles are unable to dive to avoid much of the rubbish that floats around on the surface so are at a greater danger than older turtles. The tragic deaths serve as a reminder of the dangers that plastics and discarded fishing nets pose to sea turtles.
