Police from Thailand’s Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) have arrested a woman for allegedly opening bank accounts used by online scammers, who reportedly cheated a 15-year-old boy out of about 14,000 baht. The boy, who is believed to have stolen the money from his parents, later committed suicide. Armed with an arrest warrant, CCIB officers went to a house in Tha Rua district of Ayutthaya province yesterday (Tuesday) and arrested the woman. They also seized her smart phone. The woman, whose name was withheld, reportedly claimed that she responded to an offer on Facebook to open two bank accounts in return for a fee. The accounts were used to park money wired into the accounts by victims of the scammers, before being transferred to the scammers’ accounts. One territorial defence volunteer was killed and two were injured in an ambush by southern insurgents in a village in the Si Sakhon district of Thailand’s southern province of Narathiwat province this morning (Wednesday). The ambush took place as the eight volunteers, riding four motorcycles, were returning to their base at about 8am, after having completed their routine mission to provide security for teachers at a school in Ban Aiyaeng. An unknown number of insurgents, hidden in the woods beside the road, detonated an explosive device and opened fire on the volunteers with automatic weapons, killing one and injuring two. Yesterday, January 9th, local media reported seeing a group of homeless people camping at an abandoned building on South Pattaya Road in the Nongprue subdistrict of Banglamung district, Chonburi. The group was taking over a building, which used to be a convenience store that went out of business during the peak of the pandemic. Discarded items such as old bedding, clothing, and garbage were left strewn around the building where a group of nomads had been sleeping and urinating, emitting a foul smell that was noticeable to pedestrians passing by, local media reported. Ronan Hughes, 43, who is currently serving a jail sentence of 20 years for manslaughter, was told by the Central Criminal Court of England and Wales that his gains from his role in the human smuggling ring – including cash, bank accounts and other assets – would be seized and doled out to his victims’ families, Sky News reported. Failure to pay out the total of the sum of £182,078.90 would result in two more years in prison, the court said. Referring to the latest sustainable development report, Deputy Government Spokesperson Thipanan Sirichana said the ranking reflects the vision of the government and Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha for national development. The spokesperson added that the poll was a key indicator that the government is on the right path. Thailand performed best in poverty eradication and is on track to achieve four SDGs, specifically quality education, clean water and sanitation, industrial innovation and infrastructure, and responsible consumption and production. The kingdom is also improving in overall health and well-being, gender equality, affordable and clean energy, work and economic growth, and reduced inequalities. Globally, Thailand ranked 44th, with Finland ranking first at 86.51%.
