Police officers deploy near the People Power Monument along EDSA in Quezon City on January 7, 2022 for heightened police visibility. In response to rumors of a destabilization plot, the PNP said that police were on heightened security because of the Feast of the Black Nazarene in Manila. The STAR / Michael Varcas MANILA, Philippines — Police armored vehicles in photos that went viral over the weekend along with rumors of a destabilization plot were going through regular maintenance, Police Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr., Philippine National Police chief, said Monday. The PNP has been fielding questions on rumored unrest in the uniformed services since last Saturday, but Azurin said heightened alert levels are standard protocol and that he does not think there is an actual plot against the government. "I already talked to the camp commander and was told that that was a regular maintenance checkup," Azurin said in a press conference. He said that service vehicles need to be used regularly so they do not break down in storage. Philippines's Office of the Press Secretary / AFP MANILA, Philippines — Philippine envoy to China Jaime FlorCruz hopes that the recent state visit of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to China will lead to more people-to-people exchanges between the two countries, particularly in education. Aside from deals on trade and investments, FlorCruz said he hopes that more Filipinos would consider pursuing higher education in China so the Philippines can benefit from the research, science and technology already developed there. "We need to encourage more Filipinos to pursue studies in China," FlorCruz said in Filipino during a televised briefing with state television on Monday. "Not just for them to study their language, but to study other fields such as the arts and science and technology as well, considering their innovations." Members of the Philippine National Police line up for the monthly rank inspection at the Manila Police District Headquarters in this file photo. STAR / Ernie Penaredondo, file MANILA, Philippines — The courtesy resignations and the review by a yet to be formed panel will help future leaders of the Philippine National Police have a clean slate, Police Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr., PNP chief, said Monday. He said submitting to the review could mean that police officials not involved in the illegal drug trade would no longer operate under a cloud of doubt that some of them "have been suffering since 2016, actually." Holding police officers with drug ties accountable was part of the "war on drugs" of the previous administration, with then-President Rodrigo Duterte himself accusing active and former police officials of drug ties in a speech in 2016. Through the years, several police officials have been charged with drug-related offenses although notably, convictions were lacking amid a high death toll of the controversial anti-narcotics campaign. Tourism businesses in Phuket, Phang Nga, and Krabi are up in arms over Thailand’s new entry restrictions, claiming they will have a negative impact on the sector. A total of 9 organisations have submitted a letter to PM Prayut Chan-o-cha, Public Health Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, Tourism Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn, and Tourism Authority of Thailand governor, Yuthasak Supasorn. In the letter, the businesses are calling on the government to review the requirements, which apply to non-Thai nationals only. The new requirements originally stipulated that all arrivals would need to show proof of being fully vaccinated. However, another Notice to Air Missions issued yesterday stated that passengers who could not show evidence of vaccination could be tested on arrival. This would appear to imply unvaccinated passengers can still travel but should expect to be tested on arrival in the kingdom. The re-introduction of such measures is proving a headache for businesses in popular tourist destinations such as Phuket, with operators saying the move adds further complication to tourists’ travel plans and will put people off coming. They’ve also criticised the sudden introduction of the rules, saying they haven’t been given any time to prepare for the potential fallout. In their letter, the organisations say while other countries have completely dropped Covid-19 rules, Thailand is going backwards by re-introducing them. They claim that one French tour agency has already criticised Thailand and is trying to cancel planned trips. As a compromise, Thailand’s tourism businesses are suggesting the government impose the vaccination requirement only on arrivals from countries that require negative Covid tests before returning. They say the requirement should be dropped for people coming from countries where the virus is already considered endemic and where the majority are fully vaccinated. On the characters to be replaced, the SRT said that there are 48 Thai characters and 62 English letters to be changed, not 56 as widely misunderstood, plus two logos. The name plates are on both the eastern and western sides of the station.
