PHOTO: Phuket tsunami memorial in Mai Khao. At this late stage of of December 26, 18 years ago, stunned survivors along Thailand’s Andaman coastline were mopping up the debris and collecting bodies strewn around after a tsunami hit on that morning. Just a minute before 8am, depending where you were along the coast, the first wave plunged into the Thai Andaman coastline, brimming and busy with local and foreign tourists. Along Phuket’s west coast, some areas were affected more than others. The northern beaches, with very steep shorelines, took a lot of energy out of the waves. But Kamala has a shallower approach to the beach and the waves came a lot further inland. Same at Khao Lak, north of Phuket, where waves flooded up to a kilometre inland. Patong suffered from a peninsula of land on either side of the 3 kilometre-wide bay, funnelling the energy as the waves hit. Places like the village and accommodation areas of Koh Phi Phi Don were just metres above sea level and didn’t stand a chance. As the body count became apparent, the Thai government logged 4,812 confirmed deaths, 8,457 injuries, and 4,499 missing after Thailand’s Andaman coastlines were hit by a tsunami caused by the Indian Ocean earthquake. A massive earthquake, measuring 9.1 on the Richter scale, struck off the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. The epicentre was 30 kilometres under the seabed and approximately 250 kilometres south to south-west of Banda Aceh. The small city had around 260,000 residents on the day of the earthquake. Approximately 160,000 people were killed in the Banda Aceh capital and early areas, the worst hit area around the Indian Ocean. In all, an estimated 250,000 people died around the rim of the Indian Ocean on that day. 18 years later and religious ceremonies have been held at the Phuket Tsunami Memorial Wall situated in the far north of the island, remembering victims of the Boxing Day Tsunami, aka. Indian Ocean Ocean Tsunami or Asian Tsunami. Ceremonies representing Christians, Buddhists and Islam were represented at this morning’s ceremony. Victims from 35 countries have their names immortalised on the memorial wall – their bodies were buried behind the wall. Carbon Credit Program Launched in Phetchaburi BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has launched a carbon credit program that the government hopes will encourage communities around the country to preserve and expand their forests. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has launched a carbon credit program that the government hopes will encourage communities around the country to preserve and expand their forests. According to Natural Resources and Environment Minister Varawut Silpa-arch, Ban Khong Taban in Phetchaburi province was the first community to join the campaign. The village, which joined the Thailand Voluntary Emission Reduction Program in 2015, has around 1,397 rai of land. Residents conserve the local forests with assistance from the Royal Forest Department, Kasetsart University, the Mae Fah Luang Foundation and the independent electricity producer Ratch Group. As demand for carbon credits increases on the world market, particularly among industrialized nations, Varawut said carbon trading systems could also be a substantial source of income for local communities. Ban Khong Taban in particular has been certified to hold 5,259 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2E), making it a prime candidate for the project. Ratch Group has so far committed to purchasing the credits for a minimum of 500 baht for each CO2E ton, with a share of the total revenue earmarked for forest preservation and protection. Surachai Achalaboon, chief of the Department of Royal Forest, meanwhile said the department would push the carbon credit scheme to over 12,000 other communities around the country. Police and utility officials in Nang Rong district of the north-eastern province of Buri Ram searched two shop houses yesterday (Sunday), the occupants of which are suspected of stealing electricity over the past nine months. They did not find anybody in the two shop-houses, but found several computer notebooks, 60 sets of computer accessories, Wi-Fi routers, close-circuit TV cameras and electrical distribution boards in one room and four electric fans in another room. Utility officials checked the electrical wiring and found one of the buildings directly connected to the Provincial Electricity Authority electrical cabling, which is proof of electricity theft. They estimated losses from power theft at about a million baht. Wikimedia The Royal Thai Police will no longer reveal the nationalities of foreign suspects, following complaints that doing so risked damaging relations with the countries in question. A Nation Thailand report says that the RTP has ordered all law-enforcement bodies to refrain from mentioning nationalities when discussing arrested foreign nationals. The move comes after a number of foreign ambassadors complained about “sensationalist” reporting that risked damaging international relations. It’s understood Roi Ingkhapairoj, spokesman for the RTP, issued an order on Saturday, instructing all 9 provincial bureaus to keep the nationalities of foreign suspects out of the media. (Phuket GO speculates it may be related to some of the reporting about Chinese national and Thai citizen ‘Tuhao’ over allegations of drug offences, ‘grey’ businesses and money laundering) According to Roi, the handling of such cases up to now has risked damaging Thailand’s ties with the suspects’ home countries. The order means that in future, the authorities can only provide information related to the cases in question, without specifying the nationality of suspects. It’s understood the order only applies to cases that have not yet been tried in court. Roi also wants all police officers who are addressing the media to be accompanied by colleagues whose role it is to give media interviews. According to the Nation Thailand report, the ambassadors of several countries had filed complaints that many police interviews gave people the wrong impression of their countries. The ambassadors have pointed out that they always cooperate with the Thai authorities, but “sensationalised media reports risk damaging the reputation of their countries”. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) has suggested that a recent decision to hike electricity prices by 20% in early 2023 will push up inflation and undermine Thailand’s competitiveness just as the economy has started to gradually recover from the pandemic. Citing higher fuel costs, the Energy Regulatory Commission said the power tariff for businesses will increase by 20.5% to 5.69 baht ($0.1640) per unit from January to April, with that of households remaining at 4.72 baht. The FTI, which includes representatives from industry, banking and commerce, urged the government to delay the price hike as manufacturers would be forced to increase the price of goods. FTI Vice Chairman Isares Ratanadilok Na Phuket said, "The hike will have a severe impact on people’s costs of living and the cost of the manufacturing and service sectors still in recovery." Roongrote Rangsiyopash, President of industrial conglomerate SCG, meanwhile said the move will reduce Thailand’s competitiveness and attractiveness as power costs for businesses will be 50-120% higher than those in countries like Vietnam and Indonesia. Surong Bulakul, Vice Chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, said higher power prices could increase inflation to 3.5% next year, from 3% currently forecast, with interest rates on the rise. The Bank of Thailand (BOT) said it would continue to raise rates for a while to help the economy and curb inflation.
