Photo by Reuters/Tingshu Wang As China reopens its borders, it is unlikely that Vietnam will experience another bout of Covid-19 thanks to widespread vaccine coverage and high herd immunity, experts assure. China's reopening and lifting of quarantine on January 8 mean there could be many infected people among those entering from that country. China has been moving away from its zero-tolerance policy and adopting an approach of living with Covid, and so the number of infections has been rising sharply. Malasig / Pool / AFP MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has formalized the suspension of e-sabong operations that his predecessor, former President Rodrigo Duterte, verbally ordered but never got around to issuing a written directive for. “There is an urgent need to reiterate the continued suspension of all e-sabong operations nationwide, clarify the scope of existing regulations, and direct relevant agencies to pursue aggressive crackdown against illegal e-sabong operations, in accordance with law,” Marcos said in Executive Order No. 9 signed Wednesday but made public Thursday. Marcos’ order suspends live-streaming or broadcasting of live cockfights outside cockpits, cockfighting arenas or any premises where cockfights are held. It also suspends online, remote or off-cockpit betting on cockfighting matches that are streamed or broadcasted live. Commuters queue for the Libreng Sakay program at the Main Avenue station of the EDSA carousel busway in Quezon City on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2022, in the last work week of the year. The Libreng Sakay program is set to expire on December 31. The STAR / Miguel de Guzman MANILA, Philippines — A transport group urged the Department of Transportation to rethink its plan to privatize the EDSA bus carousel next year, saying that privatization of public utilities does not guarantee efficiency, and in order to maximize private profits, often results in fare hikes. This comes after Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista confirmed the department would be heading in that direction for 2023 with the end goal of having the busway in Metro Manila's busiest thoroughfare conform to international bus standards. "We encourage Bautista to think about it carefully," Mody Floranda, national president of Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operators Nationwide or Piston said in Filipino in a statement sent to reporters Thursday. "What is the guarantee of businessmen that they will serve the public interest if the public interest is affordable and effective service?" BANGKOK (NNT) - The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) is working towards collaboration between Thai and South Korean broadcast operators to elevate the potential of Thai television programs and promote soft power internationally. Pirongrong Ramasoota, a board member of the NBTC, stated that the NBTC has held talks with South Korea’s Content Wavve company on possible cooperation to enhance Thai TV production. The South Korean media operator is a joint venture between Korean terrestrial broadcasters (KBS, MBC, and SBS) and Korean telco (SKT). According to Pirongrong, Content Wavve’s representatives are scheduled to participate in a media seminar in Thailand next month, which aims to stimulate partnerships between Thai and South Korean media operators. The NBTC board member expressed confidence in Thailand having the potential to produce content that showcases Thai culture to an international audience, stressing that this cooperation would help address this objective. The NBTC is now working on a regulation that will allow it to provide financial support for programs deemed helpful to society or for operators who implement measures to protect the disabled or the underprivileged, which is in line with Section 52 of the Broadcasting Business Act. The draft regulation is expected to be finished in early 2023 before being brought to a public hearing the same year.
