Facebook/กรมป้องกันและบรรเทาสาธารณภัย DDPM Southern Thailand is experiencing ongoing heavy rainfall, with 3 people dead and 9 provinces severely flooded. According to a Phuket Express report, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation says monsoon rains have affected the Gulf of Thailand in the southern part of the country. Flash flooding has affected the provinces of Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Trang, Satun, Yala, Songkhla, Narathiwat, Pattani, and Phatthalung, with thousands of families impacted. In total, 49 districts, 1,028 villages, and 51,543 families are struggling as a result of the extreme wet weather. 3 people are also known to have died in the floods. The report goes on to state that many areas in the South remain under water and inaccessible. Travellers are being asked to map out their route before embarking on their journey and to pay close attention to local weather reports. Many tourists due to leave Koh Samui have had to book flights off the island as a result of all ferry services being cancelled due to adverse weather conditions causing rough conditions at sea. Bangkok Airways is the only service in an out of Samui at the moment and flights are fully booked until at least the end of the year. As of last night, 51,543 families in southern Thailand, along with 1,028 villages were “underwater” and confronting flooding. And over the border, 45,000 flood victims have been evacuated to flood relief centres in five states of Malaysia, with the East Coast states of Kelantan and Terengganu the hardest hit. Thailand International Boat Show The popular Thailand International Boat Show will once more take place in Phuket from January 12-15, following a 3 year break due to the pandemic. TTR Weekly reports that the event will be held at Royal Phuket Marina, showcasing the yachting industry in Phuket and Thailand to luxury boat owners from places like Hong Kong and Singapore. The event is being organised by JAND Events, in partnership with the Thailand Yachting Business Association and Thailand Charter Week. JAND CEO David Hayes says it’s hoped the event will once more place Phuket back in the yachting spotlight. “Pre-pandemic, Thailand’s yachting industry was a multi-billion-baht industry, welcoming yachts from cruisers to superyachts and their owners from around the world. The Thailand International Boat Show aims to put Phuket and Thailand back in the limelight and on the world stage after 3 years of incubation due to the Covid-19 pandemic.” The event is expected to have up to 50 boats in the water, as well onshore marketing activities to promote various marine products and services. There will also be entertainment such as live music, plenty to eat and drink, and lots of family activities organised to celebrate Children’s Day on January 14. In addition, a charity gala dinner is being held at the InterContinental Hotel, also on January 14. The event is being supported by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, and the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau. Mr Hayes says he hopes it will showcase the best marine brands and services, while reconfirming Phuket as one of the top yachting destinations in the world. “Our goal is to bring the industry together and showcase the best brands and products from the marine and lifestyle sectors to a global audience while re-cementing Phuket and Thailand’s position as one of the top boating destinations in the world.” Source: https://phuket-go.com/phuket-news/phuket-events/thailand-international-boat-show-returns-to-phuket-in-january/ -- © Copyright Phuket GO 2022-12-20 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Tourists flying out of Koh Samui as ferry services remain suspended due to storms Facebook/Tee Yaemsa Ferry services from Koh Samui are still suspended due to stormy conditions in the Gulf of Thailand. Surat Thani Governor, Wichawut Jinto says services from Koh Pha Ngan and Koh Tao are also not operating at the moment, due to the poor weather conditions, stranding travellers on the Gulf islands. Facebook/Tee Yaemsa Ferry services from Koh Samui are still suspended due to stormy conditions in the Gulf of Thailand. Surat Thani Governor, Wichawut Jinto says services from Koh Pha Ngan and Koh Tao are also not operating at the moment, due to the poor weather conditions, stranding travellers on the Gulf islands. On Sunday, the Thai Meteorological Department issued a weather warning of high waves in the Gulf, which led the governor to order all boats to remain ashore until yesterday, at a time that was to be confirmed. However, the warning was not updated or withdrawn yesterday and the order banning boats from leaving port remains in effect. According to the Phuket Express report, strong waves up to 4 metres in height in the open sea have been reported in the Gulf of Thailand, close to Koh Samui, Koh Pha Ngan, and Koh Tao. The suspension of ferry services means both Thai and foreign tourists have had to book flights in order to leave Koh Samui. According to last night’s report, 2,400 tourists left the island by plane yesterday, while 3,200 are expected to fly in on 28 flights today. Bangkok Airways has a monopoly on flights to and from Koh Samui as it owns and manages the airport and controls airlines that can fly onto the popular Gulf island. It’s understood all flights to the island are fully booked between now and the end of the year as tourists opt to spend the New Year holiday on Samui or the neighbouring islands of Koh Pha Ngan and Koh Tao. However, the authorities have placed red flags along Samui’s beaches, to warn tourists not to enter the water during the adverse weather conditions. One crew member was found and rescued yesterday but fears remain for the welfare of the remainder of the missing crew. It was also revealed this morning by a spokesperson for the Navy that there were weren’t sufficient life vests available for all crew on the ill fated vessel. There were 106 crew on board HMS Sukhothai before the incident on Sunday evening around 11.30pm. 75 of the crew were rescued on the first day after life rafts were deployed. A nearby oil tanker responded to the vessels’ SOS alerts. The Royal Thai Navy’s Vice Admiral Pichai Lorchusakul announced this morning that a non-commissioned officer, Nathee Timdee, was rescued last night by HMS Kraburi. “All the men had been trained in survival techniques at sea, including swimming from one island to another, and how to stay afloat with a life vest, adding that being a good swimmer is not necessarily the best way to survive, but using as little energy as possible while in the sea.” He also confirmed at there were four generators in the Sukhotha. “When one malfunctioned, there were three in reserve, but this time none of them functioned, because sea water leaked into the engine room.” In contrast to earlier reports, he admitted that there were not enough life vests on board… “but the Styrofoam boxes containing the life vests could be used as floatation devices”. (Photo by Mladen ANTONOV / AFP) More than 8.1 million Thais are poor, including 4.4 million living below the poverty line, according to the latest report by The Office of the National Economics and Social Development Council (NESDC). The report on the poverty situation in Thailand in 2021, released this year, stated that the number of people who are below the poverty line is a decrease from 2020, when 4.7 million such people were recorded. The report attributed the reduction to the economic stimulus schemes, rolled out to ease the financial burden on poorer people. As income is not the only factor that reflects the poverty situation in Thailand, the NESDC has used the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI), which identifies four dimensions of poverty; education, healthy living, quality of living and financial stability.
