  1. Police check drugs smuggled into Vietnam from Laos. Photo by police Gangs usually transfer drugs from the Golden Triangle to Vietnam and Laos either for consumption or transport to other markets, police said. They choose Vietnam and Laos because both countries share a long border of 2,300 kilometers and neighbor China, Thailand and Myanmar, facilitating drug trafficking, officials said at a conference on drug prevention and control of Vietnamese and Lao police held Wednesday in Hanoi. Nguyen Duy Ngoc, Deputy Minister of Public Security, told the conference that drug traffickers have taken full advantage of the policy to open borders to boost socio-economic development between Laos and Vietnam and operate more actively than before. STAR / Michael Varcas MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Transportation said it was actively pursuing Public-Private Partnership agreements to help finance and fast-track big-ticket transport infrastructure projects facing financial constraints. At a luncheon before the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines, Transport Secretary Jaime Bautista said that these would eventually fund projects like the EDSA Busway, a network of seaports, 10 provincial airports, and the Cebu Bus Rapid Transit, among others. "Allow me to emphasize the need to undertake crucial transport infrastructure projects in collaboration with the private sector, including foreign financial and technical assistance. Some big ticket projects have encountered limited budget allocations from the national government. We are therefore actively pursuing a public-private partnership to complete projects," Transport Secretary Jaime Bautista said. Philstar.com / Kristine Joy Patag MANILA, Philippines — Lamenting that audiences have not only lost trust but have become adversarial towards journalism, journalists at this year’s Jaime V. Ongpin Journalism Seminar struggled to find solutions and answers to this existential problem faced by the profession which they partially blamed on disinformation. According to a Social Weather Stations survey released in October, 86% of respondents recognized that "fake news" — a term for misinformation and disinformation — is a problem. Many — 58% — identified social media influencers, bloggers and vloggers as peddlers of fake news about government and politics but 40% also said this came from journalists. “What is existential when it comes to my reporting and our newsroom is this new dynamic with the audience, how participative it is. And not just participative but how the audience has become adversarial to the press as well,” said Rappler reporter Rambo Talabong, one of the seven panelists selected by veteran journalists for the talk.
