  1. Another fire.

    Breaking News Fire in Chaweng

We are receiving reports of a large fire at the main junction of the Chaweng Beach Road where a transponder has caught fire.

    http://www.samuitimes.com/breaking-news-fire-in-chaweng/

I wonder if the huge power draw from Central Festival has anything to do with this one.

No, their transformer (not transponder) is not in a Chaweng Beach Road junction.

This is more likely a general overheating of the transformer due to high ambient temperature in combination with overloading (aircons running all day in the hot weather).

The transformer explosion season is here..

  2. I've been studying Thai at Walen Samui for 4 months now and I'm on book 2 at the moment. The studying is going very well and will probably advance to book 3 in a few weeks. My normal job is restaurant manager here in Samui. I decided to learn the language and resigned from my work in August last year. Have been studying since then and so far is very happy with the quality of the education at Walen. I'll be happy to answer any questions.

Very interesting you have been there 4 month's, but as posted previous from McWalen in mid October still not open. How can this be unless it's some promotion?

    You mean this post?

Real time tracking is feasible with a good GPRS data plan that allows the device to report back whenever needed (configured). It all boils down to how much you are willing to invest..

The prepaid sim of 1200bht on AIS allows GPRS connection for 1 year apparently, was supplied by the company that installs these systems in Bangkok. However sms messages are extra, this facility I only want set for when a car leaves the island and want immediate notification where ever I am. When they first activated it, I was getting sms every two minutes to tell me the car was moving !!! That would be an expensive way to do it !

I doubt that 1200bht a year will be your only cost for GPRS, that looks like the fixed subscription fee of 100baht/month.

Realtime tracking transfers somewhere between 300-500 megabyte of data per month which I don't think you will get for 100bht.

Who is going to receive the GPRS data, you? How are you going to process it?

Realtime tracking usually means that a service company receives the data to their server and presents it to the customer on a web page, often overlayed on a google earth map. They won't do that free of charge.

  4. Just arrived on samui via the ferry yesterday, an employee (exactly who employee don't know) tried to say there were no buses or taxi waiting for them at lipa noi. I told everyone it was bs, but a few still bought tickets. This occurred just before the transfer bus left to donsak. I called air asia to inform them, they insisted this doesn't happen, I could tell she couldn't care less. Annoying to see people ripped off. Tom

Arriving in Nathon is usually no problem, there will always be taxis and songtaews there even late in the evening.

The ferry port in Lipa Noi is known for having a limited number of taxis and often none at all in the evening, something to think about if you arrive there.

1200 baht, if that is what he asked, is way over the top - its a scam.

I usually pick up my visitors if they arrive in Lipa Noi just because you can never be sure that there is an available taxi or minibus there.

  5. As an aside, please excuse my ignorance but why is HC used in Swimming pools? I have had a pool for 10 years and only use a sand filter and chlorine, am I doing something wrong? smile.png

    G.

Chlorine is in free form a gas (Cl) which when dissolved in water creates Hydrochloric acid (HCl).

Are you are using it in fluid form for your pool or do you "bubble" gas into your pool water?

850 baht for 25L seems like a bargain to me, I buy 5L V-Clean (23% HCl) for around 300 baht at Chaweng Trading or Maenam Trading and use it for removing concrete stains and rust stains on tiles.

The toilet cleaner you buy at Tesco is usually around 15% HCl

  6. so what u r saying is that the government shall give me a discount on eletric if i can buy solor panels and run them into the government gride?

basically it slows my own meter down is that correct?

No, you would not want to use your own generated electricity since the price you can get when selling it is so much higher than what you pay when buying electricity from the grid.

Sell all what you have and buy it back at a lower price, the same is taught in Stock Broker 101 smile.png

  7. Laziness? Do you have children?

Sorry, that line wasn't for you but for the OP who think the closure is because "money rules", I missed to quote him.

But, since you ask, yes I have children (though grown up now) and I never had any problem walking them a couple of hundred meters.

One must have some understanding that hotel and resort owners are not very happy about outsiders filling up the parking space reserved for their customers. Most of them doesn't mind you walking through their premises.

  8. Is the OP referring to the road into Choeng Mon Beach Resort, formally Choeng mon bungalows? There is a barrier there but i've never known them to close it!

It must be that road and it is not like it suddenly has become a private road - it has always been their land.

The problem is not the usage of the road in itself but the fact that if you ride that road then you ride on something that has to be parked somewhere which most likely is also private property (unless you bring your vehicle all the way down to the beach).

There are alternatives, one of them being to park your vehicle on the main road and walk the last bit..

Is it maybe so for you that laziness rules?

  9. Also, I can not help it but why in the hell is a blurred background considered a high quality professional photography? Is this some new standard to save the memory for those pixels by blurring them out? Strange, if you ask me smile.png

Perhaps professional photographers know more about this than you. Actually far from being a "new standard" it is a very old rule-of-thumb to blur background when the subject being photographed is the primary interest. In fact, your eyes do the same thing. Of course, there are exceptions, so that's why it's a rule-of-thumb.

Even you would probably agree if you saw this photo compared to the same photo with the background in full focus.

Also, there's the optical physics of lenses and depth-of-field, but that takes way too long to explain here.

Not only would it take some time, it would also be a complete waste of time explaining for someone who wouldn't understand it anyway.

  10. The lad was a jet ski worker

That is one way of describing him, I'd use another description.

He is part of the Buffalo & Jetski family which consider themselves to be mafia and as such doesn't care about killing a cop.

You can see him waing his father and uncle, asking for forgiveness when they load him onto the truck for going with him to the police station - he is only sorry for the trouble he has brought onto the family.

    Right.

    Yes.

    It's a notice.

On a window or a door.

I've been staring at it for a while now.

Could you let me in on why you find it in any way funny or silly, please?

    It's really puzzling me . . .

    R

It could have a sexual meaning if you look between the sheet's.

So every time I go and visit friends and they invite me in, immediately now I'm going to think of having unprotected sex with them.

    Now I get it!

    Odd how some people's minds work . . .

No, not unprotected, where did you get that idea?
