  1. Stocks are closing out 2022 with more losses, giving the S&P 500 its worst year since 2008. The benchmark index fell 10 points, or 0.3% to close at 3,840, leaving it down 19.4% for the year — its worst loss since the financial crisis 14 years ago. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 74 points, or 0.2%, to 33,147. The Nasdaq composite fell 0.1%, ending the year with an annual loss of 33%. The index has fared much worse this year because it is heavily made up of technology stocks that have been leading the broader market slump.
  2. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday it is tracking a new variant of concern dubbed XBB.1.5. According to new figures published Friday, it estimates XBB.1.5 makes up 40.5% of new infections across the country. XBB.1.5's ascent is overtaking other Omicron variant cousins BQ.1 and BQ.1.1, which had dominated a wave of infections over the fall. Scientists believe its recent growth could be driven by key mutations on top of what was already one of the more immune evasive strains of Omicron to date.
  3. Cristiano Ronaldo has completed his move to Saudi Arabian team Al Nassr, following his departure from Manchester United earlier in the year. A post on nine-time Saudi Pro League champions Al Nassr’s Instagram and Twitter accounts, which also appeared on Ronaldo’s, showed the 37-year-old Portuguese player posing with the club’s shirt.

  6. A Sydney wetland has turned pink in an unusual sight that left a top scientist on a mosquito survey bemused. Associate Professor Cameron Webb from NSW Health Pathology was surveying Sydney Olympic Park yesterday when he came across a pastel pink pond. The wetland was in an "out of the way spot" within Bicentennial Park on the edge of a mangrove, a critical habitat that helps protect land from erosion.
  7. Middlesbrough moved into the Championship playoff places for the first time this season after coming from behind to defeat 10-man Blackburn 2-1 at Ewood Park. Rovers went ahead in an even first half thanks to a cool Ryan Hedges finish in the sixth minute, vindicating Blackburn’s ploy of targeting the visitors’ high line.
  8. Tate and his brother have been detained along with two Romanians, with prosecutors claiming they "appear to have created an organised crime group with the purpose of recruiting, housing and exploiting women".
  9. A Myanmar military court has sentenced Aung San Suu Kyi to a further seven years in prison, taking her overall jail time to 33 years. The country's former democratically-elected leader has been under house arrest since a military ousted her government in a coup in February 2021. Since then she's faced 18 months of trials on 19 charges - which rights groups say are a sham. The UN Security Council called for her release last week. On Friday she was sentenced on the final five charges she faced. A court found her guilty of corruption because she had not followed regulations in renting a helicopter for a government minister.
