  2. Droughts, floods, storms and hurricanes were among the most costly climate change-related disasters during 2022, according to a new report. The report by Christian Aid found that the 10 most expensive events in terms of insured losses ranged in cost from $3bn to $100bn, although the figures are only estimates, so the true expense could be much higher.
  3. 2017 South Korean officials have lifted an import ban on adult-sized sex dolls. The decision comes after years of debate over whether the government was interfering in people's private lives. The revised guidelines allow adult-shaped dolls through customs, but child-like dolls resembling minors are still prohibited, the Korea Customs Service said.
  4. West Midlands Police have launched a murder investigation after a 23-year-old man was stabbed to death on the dance floor of a Birmingham nightclub on Boxing Day evening. Officers were called to The Crane nightclub on Adderley Street in Digbeth just before 11.45pm yesterday (26 December) to reports that the 23-year-old had been stabbed.

  7. Australian-made satellites will soon be launched on a SpaceX rocket in a move designed to close gaps in the country’s air traffic management. The project, created by Canberra-based Skykraft and backed by Airservices Australia, will see a constellation of 200 satellites launched over the next two years to improve flight safety and communication.

President Aleksandar Vucic says he will "take all measures to protect our people and preserve Serbia". The sabre-rattling is louder than ever and follows media claims that Pristina is preparing "an attack" on ethnic Serb areas in north Kosovo. The government in Pristina has made no comment about the allegations. But it has previously accused Mr Vucic of playing "games" to stir up trouble. The European Union has been attempting to mediate.

The U.S. Military Academy at West Point is starting to remove Confederate statues and symbols from its campus, in compliance with a federal order formally set in motion by the Department of Defense this past October. Over the holiday break, which began on Dec. 18, the country's oldest service academy launched what its superintendent described as a "multi-phased process" to either take down or modify displays that memorialize the Confederacy, including an immediate plan to move a portrait of Robert E. Lee wearing a Confederate uniform into storage.

  12. At least 26 people have died in the catastrophic snowstorm in Western New York, officials announced Monday, marking the blizzard as the region’s deadliest in at least 50 years. Roads remain impassable and almost 10,000 people are still without power as the unrelenting storm is forecast to drop as much as a foot of additional snow, Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz said during a Monday afternoon news conference. Rescuers are struggling to free people trapped in their cars, while people stuck in shelters and nursing homes are running out of food.
