That's what I'm talking about. New broadcast here daily doesn't come close to the news broadcasted in just one city back home. Much of what we see here concerns traffic accidents, snakes, gold store thefts and 5 chasing one down the road armed with sticks or machetes. They look at what happens in the US concerning guns and not realize it's happening here also, a lot. Not the mass shootings, although they do happen here, but the people shot over minor things, not involving gangs, which is most gun crime in the US, along with suicides. Crimes involving knives and machetes far surpass anything like this in the US.

Also the shootings that have happend now during Songkran, from those I seen from news, almost every shooting had innocent people hit by stray bullets. Alot of the shootings was with more than one injury or death as well.

Exactly, people are shot over most minor stuff in thailand, and youth violence is rampant, stabbing and shooting at slightest provocation. Or just big groups of them riding around at night looking for people to attack or shoot for fun.

And thailand barely has gangs like USA. Most shootings and stabbings in thailand are results of random altercations on the streets or provocations.

Just look at Songkran now, there's lots of lots of stabbings and shootings because of petty stuff and drunken violence. And most tourists and expats have no clue, I saw many faramgs was upset 2 farangs was fighting in phuket during Songkran that they brought with them "western culture" but have no clue about the shootings and general violence across thailand

When I'm at my girlfriends we watch the news a lot, and she describes what is happening when I don't understand. Some crimes , being visual, you understand what's happening. Most people here will never know 99% of what goes on daily because the news stations don't get but a tiny percentage of the crimes that are happening, just as everywhere else.

In Europe if gun violence or stabbings happens they report it, far majority gets on national news.

I'm just saying the farangs who did that survey on that page hasn't got a single clue about the gun violence and murders in thailand. Most tourists and expats have no clue.

Hi ET, thanks so much for your introduction to this website. It’s certainly impressive and seems to be far better informed than alternative sites I have seen. 🙏🏻

That website is not entirely accurate. Doesn't use any actual crime statistics or reports for their rankings.

They use surveys that anyone can do.

Most who do for thailand is farangs who have no clue how thailands crime and violence actually is like.

If you don't know thai you miss 90% of violence and crime happening in news

Interesting but misleading. First, there are many many crime index reports.

    https://www.numbeo.com/crime/rankings_by_country.jsp

Numbeo is considered to have the most extensive data basis.

They rank Thailand as 100th and ahead of the USA, the UK,

Italy, Belgium and France. Thailand is ranked safer and with less crime

    than most European countries.

So, choose your own index to follow.

I have visited  more the 75 countries and lived for longer than

one year in Asia, North America, Europe, South America and Micronesia

    and no place is perfect.

I am an American expat and have lived in Thailand for well over 10 years.

To each his own but, as for me, I am quite happy to be here.

Numbeo is not entirely accurate. It uses no actual crime statistics or reports.

The website uses surveys that anyone can do. The rankings Doesn't always reflect on the reality.

Thais in general are peace-loving, but obviously there’s exception to that, just like there’s exception to almost every rule on the planet. You make it sound like all the Thais are murderous psychopaths and they’re clearly not!

so just like most tourists and expats make it seem europe is some sort of hell hole especially UK. when they have lower murder rate than thailand... and always rant about how UK is hotheaded and dangerous. but thailand is all peace and love, little to no gun violence, thais are most peaceful. far majority of foreigners have no clue what happens in thailand except the few crime/violence news aseannow or bangkokpost publish....

Yeah, it's crazy the things that you hear of someone being stabbed to death/chopped up for here over the years.  I know most of our countries are far more dangerous, with much higher rates of violence and murder, but there's something about the way such an insignificant action can result in boiling rage that drives otherwise "normal" people to violently kill.

It's so senseless, and they often regret it afterwards.  Generally multiple lives ruined for nothing.

''I know most of our countries are far more dangerous, with much higher rates of violence and murder'' and which countries is that? western europe, australia, new zealand, etc aint ''far more dangerous with much higher rates of violence and murder'' than thailand.... and how would you even know that? you read/see a few or not even a few, rarely violent crimes or crime news in thailand being posted on english speaking thai news and make your assumptions based on that?

Ghetto ???? Yeah every city has a "bad neighborhood(s)," have you considered moving? I've lived in 3 different moobaans in East Pattaya and never been burgled. As criminal behavior in general is so low...the Thai perception of crime is very high...that accounts for the dramatic coverage of it in the Thai press when it happens. Also, much of the violent crime is inter-personal, familial, or business related. Random stranger danger is quite rare...unlike in the West.

''Random stranger danger is quite rare...unlike in the West.'' and how do you know that when news dont report on all crimes or violence? and certinly not english speaking thai news, and i assume you cant read thai.

''the Thai perception of crime is very high'' so you know better than thais, so their perception of high crime is not true because you personally never experienced crime or seen it, and never hear/read about it?

I've lived in Thailand for over twenty years and I've not noticed (nor read about) any increase in crime rates during my time here. In particular, I've not felt any increased danger during the past two years of the pandemic, when many Thais are quite skint.

Being able to read thai opens up about crime happening which people or pages post on facebook, i am from pqttaya our house was burgled 2 months ago, my family went to the local police station and filed a report, the cop laughed and said we get 10 such reports almost daily in that area, and said not much they can do except telling us to reach out to the insurance company if we had insurance. All crimes I read about in thai news language, none of them gets published to English thai news pages

As if thai police or news publish crime rates, also news barely publish crimes unless its shootings or stabbings (which not all is even published) tons of crimes go unreported or unpublished.

  11. All depends on what area, Bangkok is huge city.  with slums, tourists areas, high scale upper class areas, cheap apartment complex, housing projects often all in same area.

Bangkok in general is safe. But also not every crime is reported to the police and news, like this recent incident, thai man robbed/bag snatched a korean person, he admited he targeted foreigners, but mostly koreans and Japanese. And he done it a few times. Crimes against tourists/foreigners is not as rare as you may think. Especially during high season.

Most crimes in Thailand are not reported at all.

This topic will bring out the thaibashers, but this stuff with young blokes, women, testosterone mixed in with alcohol happens all over the world.
No weapons used, if it was the USA maybe he would have been shot, stabbed in the U.K. or glassed in Australia.

Stupid, one life lost and others ruined. Sad for the old mum.

this one case without weapons, all other cases is with guns or machete/knife otherwise

20 years here, never had a gun pulled on me.

the few Thai males i know, don't have or carry guns.

I think your post indicates the type of people you hang out with or the bar you drink in.

Sure there are guns around, but not every Thai male has one.

Think your find more machete type knives than guns in cars.

''but not every Thai male has one.'' i never said that. but your previous comment it seem like you dont know how common guns is here, all types of people have guns here not only thugs.

majority of people have not had a gun pulled on them,  you never had a gun pulled on you does that mean thailand has little guns?

there is around 6 million registered guns, and around 4 million unregistered ones, but who knows how many unregistered there really is when alot of people make them at home and sell them and there is loads of guns coming from cambodia and myanmar smuggled in to thailand.

yes machetes and knifes are more but guns is not uncommon exactly in cars or under the seat of bikes.

  14. 7 hours ago, quake said:

So you only know two Thai males then.

I don't think you realise how many guns and how common it is with thai males in public to have guns in their car or their little man bags. And how many teenagers who has it.

There is a sh*t ton of homemade fully functional guns out on the streets, but also tons of proper factory made ones of course.

you can buy them on facebook, twitter, youtube. Some full auto. 22./9mm/380. Etc. Pistols firing 12 gauge shells too. These homemade/illegally made guns costs around 3,000 - 5,000 baht.  Theres tons of these guns for cheap money.

I was going to make a dismissive comment, but it seems we are getting a violent murder murder at least once a month now. We had the shooting of the seafood restaurant owner at the start of the month;  four bullets to the head, chest, hip and arm while he was in bed; The fellow who had his face bashed in and was  found in his pickup truck in a staged crash by his wife and her friends; And the two men who were shot near in the Bo Khaem canal.

I always used to think of Cha- Am as a sleepy town where the  biggest excitement  was the weekly expat card game where saucy language was used.

And not everything gets reported to English news either. And in early August, women pregnant I think too shot dead.

    Committed a murder before????

Why was he free to do it again???

It's common, I regularly read such cases in thai news often, some day ago a man got shot in a pub, it was reported he had shot and killed 2 people at 2 different occasions. It did not say if he has been in prison or not.

  17. All the comments talking about USA, Europe being worse than Thailand is hilarious, USA and Thailand have same or very similar rates of gun murders, USA is considered bad but not Thailand despite having same or similar gun murder rate.

No European country except russia, has higher murder rate than Thailand or gun murder rate, but Europe is so awful and Thailand is safest country on earth...

Yall think UK is so bad with it's around 650 murders yearly, but Thailands at least 2,000 - 3,000 murders yearly minimum is very safe and good.

And most people here most likely cant read or write thai, so you automatically miss the other shootings and stabbing or other crime news, as thai visa and bangkok post only post a few cases.

thailand start to become like the place/reason I left my home country for

It's so funny when people miss or dont see/hear about the rest of 90% of shootings and stabbing in Thailand as most of those news don't get published to thai visa/Bangkok post and always say "it's starting to become like USA/Europe" etc. When in fact it has always been like this and has actually decreased majorly all over Thailand.

and, sadly, in many other countries too

You just had to point that out, almost as someone said this only happens in Thailand, Of course it happens in all countries, The difference is how often it happens.

As soon as someone says "this happens alot in thailand" with shootings or violence someone just have to write the obvious that it happens everywhere. Rare in some countries, everyday in some.
