What they are also not telling you is that the vast majority of those gun deaths in the US are suicides. If you take out those and only include "gun violence", the numbers are much smaller. More people are killed by hammers and knives than guns. But, that's the difference in a country that over reports vs. one that underreports everything except the tourist numbers.

Bullcrap, gun murders stands for most of the murders in USA. There is around 17,000 murders yearly, and 14,000 is gun murders, so how is knife , hammer or other methods used more In murders? Do people not at least make sure it is right? Facts they post? See that all the time here.

I agree on last bit though.

It might seem like the case, but the statistics don't support it.  Over 50% of homicide victims are black, the vast majority of whom (90%+) are killed by other blacks.

A visit to your local walmart will expose you to lots of very scary "lower class" white people, but after a few visits you will find that they are harmless.  Try doing the same thing on the streets of Baltimore, St. Louis, Detroit and you'll likely come to a different conclusion.

and most of the mass shootings with 20, 30, 50 dead has been done by whites, black shootings are usually gang violence.

But you would hand guns out to anyone who wants them without a clue about their mental condition or capability to use and store them away from children and drunks or even if they will use them to commit the crimes with, that you say they are needed for to stop. Nothing to do with being self-righteous, it's all about self preservation. Guns are dangerous whoever has them. Less guns = safer overall for the vast majority of us. If guns are so good at keeping people in order and law abiding why is the USA so messed up with gun crime, accidents, suicides etc.? Instead it is one of the countries you are most likly to be killed in by a bullet. Open your eyes to the harm they cause everywhere in the world.

A criminal with a gun is far more likly to use it against someone acting aggressivly while holding a weapon of any kind. An otherwise normal person, with a gun, may impulsivly shoot someone rather than just leave frustrated - look at the number of road rage shootings in Thailand, they are not all done by criminals.

A gun can be handy in some very rare situations but look at the USA figures for 2018, nearly 40000 killed and less than 1600 justifiable. Thats around 38000 dead people just because Americans are too blind to realise guns kill and do very little to protect. And how many of those justifiably killed actually needed to be killed to stop them hurting anyone? and no, protecting property is no excuse to kill someone in a civilised country. I see absolutly no need for anyone, apart from law enforcement and the military to have any access to a gun outside of strictly controlled shooting ranges. The problem is the more guns there are the more unsafe people feel and so the more they want a gun for themselves which just makes things worse and more dangerous for themselves. A fun fact - people who don't have a gun are less likly to be killed by a gun than those who do. probably because they live in safer places to begin with but it is still a fact.

If I ever feel the need to carry a gun for personal protection, it is time to move far away.

around 23,000 were suicide and 14,000 were homicides out of the 40,000 gundeaths.

This is so true. In Trang where I used to live a venue we used to go to on our Friday night out was very popular in fact it was so popular it had 2 drive by shootings, the second one resulting in 2 people being shot "wounded". A woman opened a noodle shop and again was doing quite well then it had a drive by shooting these shootings were out of jealousy, no other reason. There was a fatal shooting at a night club where a hiso opened up on a table believing he was looked at wrongly "jealousy over a woman". Many more shootings in Trang a quite town which I imagine mirrors many towns in Thailand. It is very surprising how many expats are oblivious to what is actually going on around them.

yes, actually trang is often in news for shootings and stabbings, latest was 20th januari, this also came to mind when i read trang.

    assasination with automatic weapon.

and i agree trang mirrors many towns in thailand, especailly south thailand such as songkhla, surat thani, nakon si thammarat etc, and the cities in those provinces is at around 100,000 people or less, or in most of thailand the cities is small population, if a city has around 100,000 people, and lets say 50 murders = 50 murder rate.

if hat yai lets say had 30 murders, that is 20 murders per 100,000 people, that is the reality of many cities in thailand, that is a very high murder rate.

songkla had a shooting yesterday,  2 defence volunteers shot dead 1 injured, the big shot (big gangster) in that area shot them.

the victims had been drinking and one of them went over to the massage shop next door and asked the female owner if the girls could come and drink with them, and she said no, so he got angry and showed his badge and said he would close down the massage shop permantly, so she phoned the gangster and he came and shot them.

Those are family feuds, criminal disputes between associated parties or political unrest between opposing sides. Of course there has been plenty of gun violence of this nature, that has always been the case for as long as I can remember.

I'm talking about innocent random civilians on the street being targeted with at least 3 high profile cases in the last month or two (gold shop, mall and this incident today).

Thailand has not seen this many separate random attacks on civilians in the street in such a short space of time (all in 2020- and it's only February!).

    yes that is true sorry.

often gang of youths/teenagers ride around looking for people to shoot, stabb, brutaliy assault, not too long ago 2 adult men were beaten very badly in chiang mai, just beause they stopped and was being friendly and talked with a group of teenagers who was drinking, it ended with 1 of the men dead the other seriously injured,

and of course this did not end up here or bangkok post, like most violent crimes.

    https://www.chiangmaicitylife.com/citynews/crime/samurai-gang-back/

For decades, there have been gangs periodically roaming Chiang Mai’s streets, often attacking victims with no provocation with sharp knives. While there is no evidence that these incidents are connected they have been dubbed the Samurai Gang, by the local population.

that is not too uncommon in many provinces.

here is another same incident but in thai only.

In addition to his drug problems? To explain someone shooting people indiscriminately on the street i think there's probably more to it than just family problems...

drug addicts or people family issues often shoot or stabb in their villages, it just doesnt come out to english only thai language news.

Western influenced behavior? You think people are just shooting other people indiscriminately every day in the west? People that kill other people are deranged, mentally ill, it’s not a “behavior”.

right, thailand has always had higher gun murder rate than western countries, and still has, only USA has a tiny bit more, if you trust the thai statistics of crime...

  8. Yeah because Thailand is known for its reliable statistics, everything to have a good image..

Does thailand/thai police actively and engaging in doing crime statistics and reportings? Police is responsible for crime statistics.. we know how lazy and underfunded they are.

Also in thai news 2 paramilitary defence troops shot dead and 1 guard injured in shooting in songkhla, the trio was harassing a massage shop during closed time, and harrassed the girls to come drink with them and threatened owner to close the massage shop for good, they decided to sit down on restaurant next door before being shot.

This is the worst news I have read in Thailand in many many years

    Awful just awful.

What would a good outcome be with so many poor souls dead,

I hope there are no kiddies as casualties

15 shot dead in attack in south not too long ago.

3 killed 4 injured last month in gold store robbery.

same day as gold store robbery, 1 dead, 11 hurt in teenage gang fight in buriram.

Seriously?  It happens every day in the US, UK, Aus...

Maybe not in Canada, bit they're so polite they're scary.

I rarely see it in the USA because I live in a middle class neighborhood and rarely venture into places where economic desperation frazzles away at exposed nerves.  Pretty hard to avoid those places in a country where most of the people are on subsistence wages.

Wanna truly understand it?  Go out every day for 6 months with 50 baht in your pocket, and no ATM card.  Limit your discretionary spending to that 50 baht, like the majority of Thai people.  See how your mood and your priorities change over those 6 months.  Then imagine doing it for 80 years.

    AUS population 25 million- 203 murders = 0.80 murder per 100,000 people.

    UK population 67 million- 726 murders= 1.08 murder per 100,000 people.

    Canada population 37 million- 651 murders = 1.75 murder per 100,000 people.

    USA population 325 million- 17,000 murders= 5.23 murder per 100,000 people.

    TH at least 3,000 gun murders in 2016 = 4.51 murder per 100,000 people, if you all all forms of murder 4,000 - 4,500 murders = 5.88 - 6.61

It's a question of proportion. shure this happens in every country, but how often?

    http://worldpopulationreview.com/countries/murder-rate-by-country/

Homicides (murders) per 100000 population 2019.:

    USA = 5.35.

    Thailand = 3.24.

    UK (my home country)= 1.2.

so it depends who you are talking to. if you are talking to an American, you are right America has more murders per head than Thailand. If you are talking to a Brit, like me, you are wrong, Thailand has almost 3 times the murders as Britain does. We are very gentle, cool headed people. 555

    Brit = jai yin.

If you really trust thai crime statistics....

In 2016 it was reported that Thailand had around at least 3,000 gun murders = 4.41.

    If you count in all forms of murder around 4,000 - 4,500 = 5.88 - 6.61.

Crime statistics showed that mysteriously murders dropped around 2014, and crime statistics became more less published and or eventually stopped.

Yesterday on of my Thai FB friends (I buy stuff from him more than anything else) posted a video I have not seen of a man laying injured on the floor of the road. He looked like he'd been knocked off his bike as there was a motorbike nearby and a car. People were stood in the road diverting traffic. Suddenly a scream and shouts as a huge lorry just drove straight over the prone guy killing him. Driver got out - surprisingly did not carry on - and said he did not see him laying on the floor as he was on his phone. If he'd have run over my wife or kid, he'd be dead, not punched like in this video

Saw it too, actually the man filming the incident posted a video 1 hour after the man got run over, the truck driver had fled before police arrived, and they suspect he was drunk, and some comments saying he was seen earlier drinking.

  13. Most shootings dont get published into English news (thai visa / bangkok post) so expats or tourists who cant read thai miss 90% of all shootings and stabbing other crimes etc that is published in thai only.

The day after or even the same day as the lopburi robbery shooting, in buriram there was a concert, after concert ended shots rang out, 1 dead 11 hurt, nothing in English news (thai visa /bangkok post)

I read thai speaking news everyday, from my perspective shootings have gone down compared to 5 - 10 years ago, it is still high throughout Thailand but calmed down a bit but definitely alot higher than 90% of expats and tourists think.

As they think Europe is very dangerous and high crime rate, much violence but Thailand = very safe country, little to no crime and violence, despite Thailand having more murders than germany, france,uk,spain, italy combined.

I don't understand that gold shops are not robbed more often...there's hundreds of necklaces hanging there behind the ladies...and mostly no guard to be seen...yes one at the door of the mall but he's unarmed.

It does, you must know most crimes dont get published to English news (thai visa, Bangkok post) I thought that was obviously hence why there is so few crime news everyday on thai visa news etc.

some day ago 1 teenager was shot dead and 11 hurt in concert shooting in buriram, not a word in English speaking thai news.

hmmm ....just read it ,  and as usual the lowlifes all deny any involvement in the shooting ....

teenage scum .... and one 18yr old boys life taken because of these dirtbags.

Concerts and events almost always ends in huge brawls, stabbings or Shooting,  always fight between different teenagers from other villages, just some days ago 1 stabbed to death 3 injured in Phuket festival.

Too much macho attitude, this can like you said be about women, or someone looked at the gunman/gunmen in wrong way.

I remember not to long agowhen 1 dead 7 injured in shooting outside bar over 2 groups talked to same girls, some hours later somewhere else in Thailand, 5 shot outside bar in drive by shooting, over 2 groups looking at each other.

Group of 15 friends was gonna go home from concert, when standing by their car they heard 1 shot go off, and one in the group fell down shot with shotgun.

His friends did not even have time to help him before many more shots go off and 7 more in that same group got shot, and 4 other concert goers shot too.

It was no reports of fights during the concert.
