  1. We went to Bubbles last night and it is a great improvement. Was really quite impressed and I think I was the only riff raff present.

Like some clubs "No Ladyboys Allowed"? Can't believe they didn't take some more care in the way they phrased this. Is this 1950's mid-west suburbia?

I find myself wondering if signs banning Ladyboys acceptable :o

  2. Having looked at some native snak pics she has picked out with some degree of randomness a Burmese python and the common rat snake. This is colour we are looking at not size etc.

She is very certain that it was 'not one of those eel like snakes'

  3. We had a quite big snake in our road last week (about 8ft long and about 4 inches in diameter) Not sure if it was dangerous or not but we kept the cats and dog in. A passing tuk tuk driver caught it rather expertly with a stick and popped it in a bag , no doubt to take home for dinner!

There are snakes around but you don't often spot them. There are also the wolves, hyenas and other wildlife that reportedly escapes form the night safari which is probably best avoided :o

  4. White South Africans were banned from most international events throughout the 70s and 80s - I guess they were suffering racial descrimination.

Was that response by the international community a response to the'No Blacks' signs on the doors of their sports clubs (and government institutions, private businesses, whites only toilets etc)?

To me that is an example of how discrimination leads to discrimination - a circle of hatred which once started is difficult to stop.

  5. I think the idea of a poll is a very good one , as I had the same thought about 2 hrs ago after reading one of Thaiquila's posts. So I woud like to say "great minds think alike", but somehow I just can't

Thank you Gonzo for your generous and encouraging response. I'm not such a bad chap really - honest :o

I too am interested in the outcome of the poll. 50/50 at the moment and hopefully it will attract more votes. Considering the other thread has racked up 2300+ views and 173 posts I hope a few more will vote. Although whether the result will add to the sum total of human knowledge I have my doubts.

    Thaiquila

Not that a poll like this could ever be scientific, but the fact that Israelis are mentioned in the title, adds the element of Israelis, which as we all know is an unpopular country.

I only mentioned Israeli in the title to link the poll with the issues raised in the other thread. I'm sorry if you think that slants the poll towards the issue of Israel or Jewishness which was certainly not my intention. The question is a general one covering any nationality, race or credd and should be considered as such.

  6. Based on the strong emotions and opinions raised in the other thread I wonder how the numbers will stack up if people are able to have a vote on the issue.

I hope I have been reasonable in the phrasing of the question (I am sure there are plenty who will point it out if I haven't :o )

I hope the poll form works I've never set one up before.

  7. At first I thought I too agreed with Thaiquila but then the arguments about how a 'No Israelis' sign had nothing to do with nationality, race or religion won me over.

In fact in order that we may further stamp out this undesirable behaviour perhaps we could make it easier to to spot the offenders. Lets say we make all Israelis some recognisable symbol wear gold stars so we may recognise them and they could be excluded from places where decent people go.

Now I'm sure I remember from my history lessons that someone did that last century. Wonder how that turned out. . . :o

  8. It does not say race, religion, or what have you. You in your mind are putting the term religion and race into it.... If the term offends some, that is a shame, but those offended individuals are not the ones who have to pay this GH owners bills

So it is ME showing my bias, huh?

OK, the term No Israelis is indeed not related to race or religion, but rather a NATIONALITY, a nationality that just so happens to be the only JEWISH STATE in the history of the planet. Get real.

You have a lot of sympathy for these guest house owners. Where is your sympathy for the Israelis who just want to rent a room like everyone else? Are you also so bigotted that you also think all Israelis are bad guest house tenants?

Here is another case of totally benign bigotry based on NATIONALITY.

To the guy who said older Israelis would approve of the NO ISRAELIS signs, do you also think Irishmen welcomed these signs:

    no-irish.jpg

Thaiquila I think the Irish image makes the point succinctly. Any sign that singles out either a race or nationality cannot be anything other than offensive. How would Thais feel about a sign that stated 'No Thais'? Deeply offended and rightly so.

  9. Hope you found the post CC.

We had to leave our cat in the UK with my girlfriends parents -cost and the fact that he was a giant both contributing.

Howeverwe have more than made up for it since. We adopted three kittens. Two are brothers one is almost totally blind and one blind in one eye. They are a right pair. The other is such a sweet thing. She was abandoned/lost her mother at just 1 week old. She was so tiny and weak we thought she wouldn't make it but my girlfriend nursed her back to health and she is an absolute beauty (and terror!) now. She finally has her rabies shot yesterday and can join the other two outside in the garden so she is now feeling a proper grown up!

  10. Hi,

My summer in Thailand is drawing to an end. (sob!) Just wanted to say "thanks" to everyone on the board for all of your help with various questions. I have just one last question:

Spilled a drink on my very nice gaming laptop, and ended up buying a second laptop to do all of my work. When I get back to the states, the insurance company will either fix or replace the gaming laptop.

It was already going to be difficult to bring two laptops on the plane, but in the wake of the current hysteria, it seems practically impossible. (I'm not worried about the international leg. It's getting from Los Angeles to San Antonio that troubles me.)

So, I was wondering if anyone might have suggestions about the best place to go in Chiang Mai for shipping a single laptop back to the United States. Price is a concern, as is safe packing of the equipment.

Thanks again. You are all very lucky to live here, even if there *is* the possibility of the occasional earthquake. :o

    Aaron

I would try Fed Ex. Might cost a touch more but you can be sure they will look after it.

  11. a pack of chinese herb( u can find it at supermarket)

    soya sauce

    salt

    pepper

boiled water and then put all above in the pot ..taste it(dont do too much strong flavor ..when u cook it will be concentrated )...cook till the chicken is soften

    easy hah?

Great thanks for the recipe. I will try it out next week and report back to you.

  12. Thank you Ajarn I appreciate the information.

Why however do you feel it appropriate to add a sarcastic response at the end of your post? :o

I searched under numerous titles and nothing came up that I was happy with so I turned to the board to see if anyone could help.

I also know the use of Khun is a respectful form of address but I thought perhaps there would be a more appropriate phrase for someone in authority. I thought the people on this board who have a greater knowledge of Thai etiquette than I may be able to offer something better. Is that really so troublesome?

Do you feel posting how to use a search engine demonstrates your superiority and greater intellect? If my small request was so tiresome for you why trouble yourself to respond.

I believe Ajarn is the term for a wise teacher - surely someone worthy of the title should be prepared to use a little patience with those less knowledgeble than themselves rather than displaying an arrogance bordering on rudeness.

Good day to you sir :D

  13. Morning All :o

A whole bunch of question that i would be grateful for some help with.

    1. Who officially runs Chiang Mai - a governor, a mayor? Or is one in charge of the city and another the province?

    2. What would be an appropriate and respectful way to address either/both of these gentlemen in a letter written in English?

    3. Any help with an address would also be appreciated.

I have searched the forum and google to no avail for answers to the above and hope there is someone more knowlegeable than me that can help or point me in the right direction.

    Thanks :D

  14. From the breed make them have black meat and done .

black chicken = Taihe chicken = black-boned chicken = Silky chicken Notes: Many Asians believe that soup made from black chicken has medicinal properties that are especially helpful to women.

Being a mixed Chinese TH , in my family sometimes cook "black chicken" as stew/soup with chinese herb .. for me the taste is not differrent from other kinds of chicken

    05.jpg

some people think black chicken 's meat is coarse , it's not so good for cooking in other ways

    Nutrition Fact

Thank Bambina I like to try new things so I think I'll give it a go.

  15. Aviva in Bangkok have told me they will cover all electrical items (laptops, digitals cameras etc) at a cost of 1% of the value in the house and 2% anywhere in Thailand. Looks to be a good deal to me.

Haven't seen the full policy document yet they are sending it by EMS and I will see if there is anything nasty lurking in the small print but they have a good reputation.

  16. Like Canute you can't hold back the waters if they come so no point in worrying.

If it floods, get your kit upstairs, crack open a couple of beers and wait for the waters to subside. If it doesn't crack open a few to celebrate!

Or move your house/usiness up the mountain!
