Not quite a pensioner (4 years to go). I live in what some regard as an expensive town in Laos - Luang Prabang. My 3 bedroom house by the Mekong river, plus private expat health insurance, 2 fast internet connections, off-road motorbike costs, annual visa/documents, and healthy food (I always eat out every day - too cheap to bother preparing my own), cost me the equivalent of about 30,000 baht a month (I earn three times that amount, so my expenditure of 30,000 baht is not limited for financial reasons - that's just what it costs me to have a happy and healthy life!).
I was reading about visa requirements in Laos and it seems hard to live there long term and no retirement visa even if married to a Lao?

I have been there as far back as ‘82 as a young US Marine in Subic Bay and the country hasn’t changed much. Yes the girls are beautiful and friendly, but you marry their whole family when you marry one, way worse than Thailand, and are the family’s ATM for sure. There is no divorce there if you get married in -country so better to marry in your own country in case you need to divorce later. Many Filipinas will marry any foreigner just to get out of the country and to earn some money to send back to the family. Just too much poverty there to deal with in my opinion. Some Thai women can be that way but not quite as bad. I agree with others that Thailand is more developed and the hospitals are way above PI. Beautiful beaches and most speak English is a big plus. My choice, Thailand.

I remember when the rate was over 70 to the UKP.
Cheap living and the whole country was a lot more fun than it has now become.
Was truly "Amazing Thailand"
I’m sure it was even cheaper 20 years before that. What’s your point? Live in the now, not the then. It’s called reality. We could reminisce all day about the “good ole days”. It’s been beat to death.

The difference is that AstraZenica is recalled it there was a problem. You think China would recall the Sinovac it there was a problem? Would they risk losing face to do that?
David
China is the one that CAUSED the pandemic! I don’t think you can lose face more than that.

I think there is an aspect of "what happens in Thailand stays in Thailand"
Lots of guys are having sex with ladyboys and are in complete denial when asked their sexual orientation or history. In their mind they are straight and have never had sex with a "man".
The data is only ever going to be as accurate as the information shared.
I would think if they were gay they’d prefer a man that looked like a man, no? I’ve always thought the ladyboy obsession to be a “fetish”, not a sexual preference. I could be wrong. Either way, probably something guys don’t want others to know about.l, thus the HIV spread.

I live in the US right now for another 3 years until I retire and my Thai wife and I head to Thailand to travel around and enjoy retirement. I asked my wife if she had any concerns and she said if the government gets bad we can go somewhere else like Vietnam. It’s good to know she’s willing to move around in case things go bad. So I’m not worried about anything other than what car I’m going to buy when I get there. I can handle that kind of stress.

If true, you made every classic mistake a farang could. Better cut your losses and run.

A 7 or 10 day quarantine will not be acceptable to tourists here for a 2-week holiday.

Great News
I'm due to fly any time after April 1, and I've already had 2 Vaccine Shots, with the 2nd Shot Feb 15th, so I'm in the Green Zone
You better hope you have acceptable proof, or you may be turned away. The question is, what is accept proof to them? They talk about a “vaccine passport”. Anyone seen one yet?

I think it’s the sexpats that go there that get bored after chasing bargirls for 6 months. If you’re going there for a more relaxing atmosphere or to travel the country then I think you’ll be happier. It doesn’t sound like you want to retire, it sounds like you want to sow your wild oats. So go there and sow them and then when you decide you want to actually retire then you’ll know if Thailand is the place for that.

Unless they say so. It IS their country, lest you forget.

And what happens to people like my daughter, that have serious adverse reactions to vaccines? She cannot have them, but she's lived in Thailand for 5 years now. She has nothing left in our home country, her home is here.
Do they even realize there are a lot of people with this problem? No offense, but this is not your country or your daughters country and you’re at the whim of any rule they impose. You knew that when you came here.

Not seeing how his statement has anything to do with race. Sounds more to me like he doesn’t want it because that’s where the bloody virus came from.

Are you a U.S. veteran by any chance? I’m in America now and I’m only 59 and got called by the VA and offered the Pfizer vaccine which I took. If you are a veteran, you could contact the VA and see if you could get a vaccine if you returned to the states on a visit. Just a thought.

My wife had no kids and had never been married but she was 36 which is a little old for first time marriage. We also got married in the U.S., not a traditional ceremony, so I paid no sin sod. But you must also remember that the adult children there support elderly parents in retirement, and your wife may expect you as a couple to send money monthly to the family. Negotiate and work out the amount before getting married. It doesn’t have to be much, what would be a car payment to you might be a months salary for a Thai. I think sin sod is becoming a thing of the past as western culture continues to influence Thailand. Whatever the case for you, good luck.

Never liked Starbucks coffee. Thailand needs a Tim Hortons.

Some of the expats in Thailand love to imitate the locals and love their drink. A lot of those on the forum. Just look at the howls of displeasure when alcohol is banned for a day.
If guilty send him to jail and then ban him from entering Thailand. 2 people died and if he was drunk its an unforgiveable act.
IF, is right. How about waiting for all the facts to come out before crucifying the person and painting expats as just a bunch of drunk a$$holes driving around with no regard for human life. Maybe they WERE drunk, but we don’t know by the story. You sound like a self-righteous bitter old person.

So sexpats are what they consider “quality tourists”, I guess.

Based on that I have to say the divorce rate maybe 10% assuming posters weren't using a bit of load ????
I think there are many more “deliriously happy” farang out there than not. It’s like Amazon reviews, people with negative experiences tend to be more vocal about it than people who are satisfied. I’d say more here on TV bash Thai marriage than glorify it.

I live in lower Sukhumvit, 3 minutes walking distance from Asok bts. Paying 45k for 70 sqm condo with large swimming pool and double gym. 5k for electricity, platinum true cable, 100 mb/s internet and water. I have 3 girlfriends that I support (them and their families in isan) Total average they cost me around 30k when I do not have time for them, or up to 60k when I meet them frequently. Once per week I go out, not huge spender but mostly I go at "Levels" and that is 5k per night when you go there solo or with one girlfriend. That is 20k per month. I like to go to cinema , especially empty ones like in BKK, high profile with perfect sounds and sofas- emporium it is, minimum ticket 400 baht up to 1000 per person. I do that once per week, not alone, and I use that time to purchase nice steaks and groceries from gourmet in emquartier. That all cost around 3-4k per visit. That is 15k on average. Twice per week I dine out with one of girlfriends, whole wine and dine experience is on average 2500, that is 20k monthly. And on empty days, sometimes I do not spend anything, sometimes I spend 1000+ on grab or food panda. Let's say that is 10k reserved. Add all this and you will get around 135k-165k per month. For me this is COMFORTABLE living. Everybody is different. I have 54y, I earn passive income on my crypto above 400k baht monthly, have elite visa, and my divorce in Europe costed me more than 1.8M EUR 3 years ago so I could say I am saving money here (which is actually true- I cannot spend more than half what I make, for type of living that I currently live).

This is more of a bragging post, most don’t have this kind of income. It has nothing to do with the OP’s situation. Go to the beer bar and brag to the blokes there. Or maybe one of your 3 girlfriends will want to hear it.

I could whip out 100 easily back in my military days when I was 20, but this old US Marine veteran could probably push out only 10 or so at almost 60. This post reminds me I need to get in better shape.

The racism in Thailand is deafening. You do that in the west and they’d be burning down cities.

My wife has trouble admitting she’s wrong when she clearly is. I know that can be just a female trait but the “save face” cultural thing probably has a lot to do with it as well.
