Why doesn’t she just go back to that country and initiate the divorce? She shouldn’t have to stay there the whole time it’s being adjudicated.

I brought my Thai wife here to the US and we’re going to Thailand to live in 4 years when I retire. My pension will go a lot farther there and our quality of life will be far better. She hasn’t put up much of a fuss and she knows I’ll go whether she does or not and since I’m the gravy train she’ll go. Maybe the mistake you made was making her too independent. Either way, good luck to you.

Why not just leave instead of Thai bashing on TV? Seriously.

Rules changing on a whim what a way to live your life when you can never feel 100% secure. As for the smugness of sum people it never said he could not prove his income. He may not have had 400,000baht or 800,000baht in his account he may not have kept 50% of that untouched in his account (forever). It is very possible he could prove his income with bank statements. I remember going to immigration (an office I had used for 8 years so 8 applications and over 32 90 days reports) and asking the question way back in October 2018 about my requirements and if bank statements would do to prove income (which hadn't changed in 9 years well annual increase) to be told NO! Then told "it's only 800,000baht 3 months before and left for 3 months after application". I blew a fuse and told them to shuve Thailand and walked out leaving Thailand 5 months later. Leaving was the best decision I ever made, well settled back in the UK, wife being treated with dignity and respect, children loving school and me actually enjoying driving again. Beer is great, wine is great, food is far better quality and the icing on the cake is its all cheaper than Thailand now.
Most people find the immigration requirements not a big deal. Really? 90 day check ins were that bothersome? You felt insecure with changes in requirements? Wow, how did you get this far in life? There are some weak-minded people in this world. You need to live in some real third world countries and then you’d realize Thailand is a breeze to live in. So the UK is cheaper to live in than Thailand? Bahahaha You must not have been able to prove the financial requirements for the retirement visa and had to leave Thailand and now you’re trashing the place over your bitterness. Sad.

And the BS that they 'would let it go this time' is pure face-saving <deleted>.
I live close to the US-Canada border and I've been stopped and my car searched for no other reason than some young kid with a new badge wanted to. Wrong or right never enters the picture. Countries do what they want at their border, and you’re at the mercy of immigration officers if you want to get in. It’s not just Thailand. It doesn’t matter how wrong it is. You can’t do anything about it.

The reason we came to live in Thailand in the first place, is the same reason we will leave.
Change! New Horizons! New adventures!
Once my house in Kanchanaburi is sold, I too shall be gone.
It's been a great 20 years! Bangkok, Samui, Jomtien, Kanchanaburi- many great adventures.
But honestly? I would be bored if I had to do those 20 years over.
You can only come to Thailand for the first time.....once!
Uncle Bob
Me thinks you need to go back to your home country for a few years to get that "new car smell" from Thailand again.

What US bank do you use? No charge transfers for senior citizens is great!
I was wondering the same thing.

The problem is that to them it looks like you’re trying to scam the system, like so many others. They’re just doing their job.

There were plenty of us foreigners in Japan over 30 years ago and we were in the US Marine Corps at the time.

Madmen does not sound bitter, he sounds dubious, which, when reading your own words, seems reasonable. Who is judging?
Being "stuck" here is little different than being "stuck" back home, except that it is cheaper and more palatable. Know plenty of people in the US who are unemployed, unemployable, losing their homes, in the middle of a horrible divorce, or otherwise had their lives completely disrupted and looking bleak. Many would be happy to be "stuck" here instead.
When is the last time you were in the US? Economy is booming, lowest unemployment numbers ever in history, if you can’t find a job, you don’t want one. I live here now so I know. Just wanted to clear that up.

It’s normally biting a bullet along with a shot of whiskey. I watched a lot of westerns as a kid.

So now we live in Thailand and my wife has permenant residence in Australia and I feel incredibly lucky that we could go to Australia anytime at the drop of a hat
You’re lucky you can do that in Australia. If you (meaning your wife) had permanent residence in America she could only be out of the country for up to 6 months out of every year to maintain permanent resident status. On the other hand, the green card in the U.S. is good for 10 years and not 4. Just thought I’d point out the differences. This is why my wife will be seeking her Citizenship here in the U.S. and gaining a U.S. Passport so we can travel back and forth without problems when I retire in 4 years.

"What makes 30-something single Thai women to seek "guys from 18 to 40 y.o." - Simple, they want a guy around their age within 10 years of their age. They don't want some old dude on top of them in bed. They don't want to be doing their father or grandfather!
Not always the case. Some older men just want companionship and it isn’t all about sex. Being in the company of a pretty young lady makes him feel young and alive again. If the woman wants security then it’s a good trade off. If a woman wants a younger man for sex then that’s perfectly fine also.

Not necessarily I have a joint account at Bangkok Bank with my wife but my local Bangkok Bank branch where we have the joint account gave me such a hard time that I went to my local SCB branch and opened an account in my name only. My local Bangkok Bank branch wanted to make a copy of my original Social Security Card from the States which I don’t even remember what I did with I think I left it in my briefcase that’s in storage back in the States, and they wanted some kind of letter from Immigration to open an account in my name only.
So I went to SCB and I opened an account in my name only with no problems at all, all they asked to see were documents that I have readily available and I did have to provide my Social Security Number on their forms but it was really easy. I have excellent online banking with SCB and everything else I need including a real debit card with the Master Card logo on it.
It just depends on the bank branch they all have their own little rules on what’s required for a foreigner to open their own account. If they give you a hard time just ask to speak with the manager and if the manager also gives you a hard time then don’t even waste your time just go to a different branch or bank.
Opening a Thai bank account in your own name can be a challenge but it is very doable. Apparently ever since 2016 some of the banks made some new rules I guess I’m not sure. When we originally opened the joint account at Bangkok Bank that was back in 2015 before they started making things more difficult and back then all they needed was my passport. Although I had no problem opening my own account at my local SCB branch. It just depends on the local bank branch sometimes you have to do a little bit of bank shopping until you find the right bank. It took me about two or three tries until I eventually got my own bank account at my local SCB branch. My local SCB branch is really good but it just depends on where you live I guess and that particular bank branch.
Why would they require an American social security number? Seems some risk of identity theft to me.

What is an 'extended stay retirement visa?"
You stay based on yearly extensions such as marriage, support of a child, retirement, being a monk, etc.
Just curious. but what are you talking about?I was wondering that, too. I was thinking if everyone just gets that why bother with the whole monthly income/800,000 baht in the bank requirement? lol

Let's be honest here. Thai girls are often pretty, but they are terrible in bed (like most Asian women) and horrific to talk to. On the other hand, they are cheap, plentiful and available.
It all balances out.
Man, you’re hanging out with the wrong girls. And I’m not talking about bar girls. American women are far worse in bed than Thai girls from my experience, and I don’t rent them.

There will be many expats that will have to leave the Kingdom because they won’t have the funds to stay. The party’s over, I guess, for those lying about their income for years. Good luck to them as they travel to their home country and try to make a living for themselves. I don’t say this sarcastically, as I do feel for those who are going through a lot of stress now, even if it is because of their own decisions.

I have a few military buddies that retired there. They said it was still the dirty third world country it was when we were there in the Marine Corps in ‘82. Not much has changed. I think Thailand is a lot better option.

Why an exodus ? its not that hard to put money in a Thai account. If you have the money its just moving money around.
I believe his inference was that many do not have the funds and were lying under oath to obtain the proper affidavit which is probably true.

Is there any advantage in a married woman changing her name these days?
My wife will be getting her US citizenship in a few years and we want to be able to travel back and forth from the US to Thailand with no issues. Having a plane ticket in her married name and both passports in her married name would be advantageous for having no issues.

Since you specifically mentioned Soi Cowboy and Nana then you DO have a clue about Thailand.

Beauty is subjective. Some like Asian women, some don’t. It’s really not a big deal. Enjoy the women you like. The guys you see here talk about them in a flattering way obviously like Asian women, that’s all.
