  1. Having previously lived and worked in Thailand on a Non B and Work Permit, I decided end of last year to cut loose from the rat race and just take it easy for a while.

I have the funds to support myself and now slowly plan to resume full time employment at some juncture. Here in Thailand or elsewhere, not sure yet? But I am in no rush!

This current fiasco as explained by the OP leaves me also very concerned about my next planned Tourist Visa run. It will be my 4th in 8 months.

I do not have property here, but I do have kids from a now dissolved marriage. My ex wife and I parted amicably and we have a notarised contact approved by the courts prior to our divorce indicating my limited financial responsibility for the kids, which in essence are School fees and a contribution towards their well being.

To my mind when one applies for a Tourist visa and shows proof of a long standing bank account with a Thai Bank it clearly shows you are not in fact NOT a Tourist!

Preempting how reactionary and pedantic the immigration officials are likely to be the chance for debate will probably be nil if doubt arises form the documents I produce.

So my addition to the list the OP has made are:

    1. Bring along the divorce papers in Thai

    2. Produce Western Union cash collection documents.

When this potential visa problem first echoed via the jungle drums I asked my brother to send me a few small amounts of cash (GBP400 per despatch) from the UK. This can be done via the internet. I have kept these transaction receipts as proof of my finances. I will undertake another such transaction next month. This gives me some 7-8 transaction receipts of funds to cover my stay as 'A Tourist'

I return the funds to him the same way end of every month.

I believe this to be a more 'Tourist Centic' way of showing financial independence without (hopefully) drawing scrutiny to ones finances.

  2. Had a very simlar problem recently with my Honda Forza (16K on the clock)

Juddering when cold, under load or on an upward incline start.

Took it in to renew the rear tyre last week and asked them to look into the juddering issue?

They removed the clutch plate (Fig 5) from the housing, showed me the wear on the pads (still within tolerances) and explained the dust accumulation would be the culprit.

They cleaned out the housing (Fig 1) and now its as responsive as new. Juddering gone.

I would guess the remedy for a PCX would be the same?

  3. Yes, prior to this NCA service we used Chan Tour, also operating out of the main Bus terminal in MSK near Serm Thai Plaza.

Like you, my issues were, bus age and condition, driver standard (speeding and/or brake-accelerate-brake-accelerate, which tends to slosh one about when trying to sleep), disurbance during high occupancy trips (selfish knobs playing their entertainment systems at full tilt without headphones).

But one of the main bug bears had with Chan Tour was the 'holier than thou' attitude of the Katoy attendants they use.

Some of which were at very odd stages of their metamorphosis!

If I recall the departure time currently MSK-Mo Chit is 21.40

Departure from Mo Chit- MSK about the same

    But please check for certainty

  4. Ticket Office/Terminal is situated on the left heading out of town on Thanon Chaeng Sanit, just before the Pink Bus Terminal, or directly opposite Muang Thai Insurance Life Building

Currently only 2 departures (Gold Class) per day, morning & evening.

All the usual services and comforts that NCA provides (plenty of reviews on TV and out there in Tinterweb land)

We paid THB399/person MSK-BKK last night.

  5. Well, there are Thai degrees, and then there are degrees. And Thais love a degree holder, regardless of the job level - possibly excluding labourers and cleaners, but I wouldn't be sure of that - and irrespective of other abilities. I've had girls working for me, with paper qualifications coming out of their ears - and damn-all common sense.

My eldest son has no degree, but he is a chartered accountant and FTSE250 CEO, who would leave most intellects, Thai and otherwise, in his wake. But would he qualify for a job here, if not for his CEO credentials? Possibly in an accounting firm, but probably not outside of his job experience.

Do you have qualifications that would be equal to a degree?

    No I don't.
In both the industries I have worked they needed my practical expertise first and for most. The fact that I have worked for MNC's opened the doors quickly then to managerial opportunities.
  6. What is the purpose of this job hunt ? Are you looking for employment as a primary means of support or is it intended to stimulate to mind (The reason behind looking for a new field of employment).

I have been thinking along similar lines myself, to look for employment in a totally different field. I am not interested in retiring, but I would like to work in a different industry or maybe take up a course in a new field.

Until 2002 my field of expertise was Automotive Coating, worked for many years with BMW and Akzo Nobel.
Then in 2002 had a chance to change disciplines and got involved in Underground Construction & Mining solutions.
Had initial doubts if I could make a successful transition as I am not a civil engineers? But I developed successfully in that field for the past 12 years. Managing SEA for a renowned German Mining Solutions Company and Regional Manager South Asia for BASF India Ltd.
So the managerial experience gained along side the technical and practical aspects of Automotive Coatings and Construction Chemicals have been Business Development & Project Management. These skills I believe can cross multiple industry.
Clearly I could/can go back to what I know, but I actually fancy working for an NGO. Big salary is not a key driver for me, but I do need a challenge and a job whereby I get out of the office 50% of the time.
  7. Cheapest and generally the most effective security if you live in a gated village or Soi is from time to time treat the security crew and the ground staff.

Sometimes, when it's hot bring them some ice and a slab of soft drinks, if you have a BBQ pass a few plates to the on duty guys, tip them well on New Year/ Songkran, as your kids grow out of stuff pass it to them (they either have kids or will sell it).

If they are in your pocket they are less templed (one hopes) to tip off thieves for the sake of a small commission when you are away.

Coincidently or not, both my direct neighbours where broken into twice, and both had invested in full alarm systems.

  8. If you have enough experience just lie on your resume.

Choose a city, a university and a course - put it on your CV and forget about it.

For somebody in their 20's, they are likely to check - but for somebody mid 30's plus it is experience that matters.

You seem like a decent bloke so it might not sit well with you to be dishonest but hey, if that's what it takes to get on in life and you are confident enough in your abilities then go for it, you have nothing to lose.

Yes, fibbing did cross my mind, but as you state, I am a trust worthy chap and that would go against the grain to falsify information.
Anyhow, when it comes to work permit applications, copies of certificates are required.

  9. I do not have a University degree, but my career path and opportunities have given me a wealth of experience and knowledge from working mainly with European, Fortune 500 companies. (I am British, 53 years old)

To date, like most people I have taken career opportunities along the way presented to me via by my network of friends and business associates.

The past 18 years I have lived and worked in Asia.

I have taken a break from work for the past 4 months and now plan to return to employment in July.

I wish again to work for a Thai based company, which I have done twice before.

I am keen to look for opportunities outside the industries I have previously worked, therefore my network is of little use.

For the first time I am using online resources to job hunt, and what is immediately evident is that all jobs state that a degree of some sort is the minimum requirement!

My observation and concern is that when applying online for jobs i will not get past the first hurdle which is normally education, and therefore my application is rejected outright without further consideration of my experience!

Would I be right in deducing that without a degree it is unlikely I will succeed with online job applications?

    Anyone had similar experience?

  10. It's clear something is amiss if her character has changed like that.

If you are willing to try and work things out with her that is commendable if you see long term merit in doing that?

However, I would suggest you initiate 'Plan B' while you are working things out.

Meaning, get yourself set up to be able to leave, disappear, escape at a moments notice, just leaving non essentials behind.

If her ability to reason is diminishing then it could turn very ugly for you when you try to split amicably.

Not saying it will turn nasty, but from my experience preparing your escape plan now if things don't work out could save you stress, money & fear.

If you work things out, nothing lost. As that say forewarned is forearmed, and it looks like you are getting plenty of forewarning

    Good luck

  11. (Posted this here for the entertainment value, cos it will make you smile)

My Thai girlfriend has a lingerie shop, not the usual skin coloured, high waisted, not tonight Josephine, passion killing bloomers that most Thai girls find so practical, but some cheeky little numbers.

As a result there is an array of nice lingerie and thongs on display on our washing line daily.

Our laundry is hung out to dry in our outdoor kitchen area which is secured on all sides, of which 3 sides above a 1 metre wall has a criss cross fence made of Shera. So fairly secure. Average gap size maybe 2 inches square.

Some pervert Tuesday night fashioned a grappling stick made from an old coat hanger and methodically reached through the small gaps in the Shera fencing to successfully snatch (oops) half a dozen sets of lingerie and thongs.

Then the sick <deleted> leaves a note with his phone number congratulating the owner of the thongs on how sexy they are!

My girlfriend called him and he again thanked her for the great undies.

I told my girlfriend we should take a photo of his note. Make a large 3m x 3m banner of the photo and hang it outside our shop asking passersby if they know this unhinged mongrel?

    Nowt queerer than folk aye!

  12. Took my Forza in for an unscheduled oil change today as I planned to take a long trip next week.

During which the technician noted a series of fine cracks in the rear tyre grooves. (pic #1)

They couldn't explain it as the rear wheel/tyre was replaced during the recall mid 2013, therefore the rear tyre has only travelled some 10,000km.

I looked up on the net what could have been the cause? and most attribute cracks in the grooves to ageing.

My immediate thought was they palmed of old rear tyres for free exchange during the recall!

Needed to evaluate the age of the tyre? This code I discovered next to the DOT data on the tyre side wall (pic #2)

The rear tyre infact only 10 months old as the last 4 digits are 0613 (pic #3)

Question then is, what has caused this groove cracking?

Have ordered a replacement tyre, takes 7 days at a cost of THB3,000

This might serve as a 'heads up' early warning to other Forza owners.

    Stay Safe!

  13. Black Mercedes = @#$hole. Add a red plate and means huge @#$hole. Every close call I have had in driving in BKK has been with Rich jerks in German cars. No matter. The rich can still kill whoever they want in Thailand. Hope some day people driving cars that could pay for 500 medical operations for the poor will become targets.

I resent that you judge rich people and Mercedes drivers as being jerks just because one poor person in an old Mercedes crashed while drunk.

not just one... tons and tons and tons of incidents with cars, motorbikes, guns etc. where the rich Ammart's kids stomp all over Thailand like some Roman General uninterested in their carnage because of WHO they are

THIS is Thailand's problem "krenge jai" your 'betters' and if you can't see that then you are amazingly naive - his relatives COMMENT was:

"explaining that she does not want the incident to make it to the news as she is a high-ranking military officer"

    as for your:

"just because one poor person in an old Mercedes crashed while drunk"

    I am SPEECHLESS

I am aware first hand of a case in Isaan last year, where the daughter of a well known insurance regional manager killed a guy early one morning leaving a pub.

She was absolutely steaming drunk and pulled out of a junction in their Camry in front of this guy on his motorbike. The guy died instantly.

It did not take long for the girls Father to offer 1 million Baht to make the whole thing go away. The died guys family accepted the money. Done & Dusted.

So now this fellas already spoilt daughter has been taught a twisted life lesson that (i)Daddy will sort it out as always and (ii)the value of a less fortunate life can be bartered.

I dont blame the dead guys family from taking the money, they can't bring him back and 1 Million Baht could (if they don't gamble, drink or squander it away) give them a comfortable life in his absence.

But the justice system must name and shame these f--ks and make them accountable ensuring a mandatory custodial sentence for drink drivers who's action result in manslaughter.

Recalling this incident just makes me seethe once again!

I would be interest to know how these things get sorted out if a 'rich kills another rich kid'? Don't recall ever hearing of such a case!

  14. Yes, just take a look any afternoon/evening at the General Topic menu overview here on TV and you will see an individual that has an option on almost half the running topics!

That's a fella that needs to get a life!

Ironie is he will contribute to this topic no doubt.

  15. I have been buying bits and pieces from Ali Express for some 6 months now and delivered to Thailand

Never had an issue with the product quality and delivery ranges from 3-6 weeks.

I also do not trust anything from China 100%, and not sure if the customer protection programme would actually work in the event of a dispute?, so my rules are:

    - Know for sure the item i want is not available in Thailand.

    - Only buy from venders with the highest order rate and good reviews.

    - Only buy items with free shipping to Thailand

    - Only to buy items of a value I can afford to loose if undelivered, damaged or of poor quality.

    So far so good.
