A friend of mine has just done the retirement visa here in CM. As the immigration people all spoke english, he did it directly. Saved himself about 15,000 + as the fee was around 2,000+. Forget the agents, they're just there to fleece you.

Ah...the classic "I personally have no problems. so naturally there are no problems"!
Please don't forget to ad the "If you don't like it, go home"- BS!
Can you read? I never said there are no problems, I merely provided a counterpoint plus asked in what way Immigration could ease up on expats. And don't ever assume you can read into my inner thoughts with your "don't forget to ad, etc". Mind you, I note you are a "senior member" so perhaps your faculties are failing.

Tell that to the Tourism Minister! Oh, and give him a hug while you're at it!
TNA reported that the Minister for Tourism and Sports went to Koh Samui on a fact finding mission to hear local opinion as the tourism sector suffers a downtown in the number of visitors.
I'm not claiming that tourist numbers are increasing, I'm merely pointing out to the moaners and complainers on this thread that the tourists haven't stopped coming, just that there's less of them. Tourism remains a major income stream for the kingdom.

Twice i have had encounters with them , both times cost me millions of baht due to their lies.
In a coma, my wife was threatened with my deportation, that was a BIG problem.
not living in a dream world but definitely living the dream here in LOS. wouldn't live anywhere else.

They wonder why i scare them back and its putely because of the amount of cash ive splashed out here over the decades. I dont want special treatment but would like my family not have to be raided checking for drugs and guns or have tourist police out to check all because my inbred neighbours feel inferior and have to act like children and lie to authorities in the hopes of being booted out of the country because my neighbours think they are going to get our farming machinery, land and such.
Crazy but true! And no i dont have guns or drugs but thats what ive had to deal with this past year. Insane!
Whats worse you can have video evidence and make countless police reports of fake police reports made and even the police believe us but no action is taken and this is why it doesnt change. It's embarassing to Thailand. If i was in a better financial situation i would hav3 left already. One things for sure though and that is my family stopped coming many times a year years ago because they dont feel safe.
You need a go fund me page so you can leave.

I always chuckle at the RTP and Tourist Police picture boards when they "crack" a crime. Hilarious.

Jingthing is correct. Come in on a 30 day and once in, get a local immigration/visa consultant involved who will quote you a fee to handle everything for you. They can arrange opening a bank account, getting the non-o and the 12 month renewable. They can also handle the 90 day reporting for you.
Up here in Chiang Mai I used a company called Siam Legal. They have offices in Bangkok as well.
Budget around 20,000-25,000 all up for everything. They take the hassle out of it. Also you could shop around for a better deal but I found most up here about the same price all up.
Good luck.
