You could just do a border hop to get a 30 day visa exempt entry and then apply at immigration for the non-o visa.
The embassy in Vientiane will issue a non-o visa if you have financial proof but also require a police clearance and a medical certificate. You could apply for a single entry tourist visa there. With your history you would not need much more than the application form and a copy of your passport photo page and entry stamp for Laos.
A single entry non-o visa is 2000 baht and tourist visa is 1000 baht.
You need to make an appointment to apply for the visa.
I'd check with my local IO whether they issue in country Non-Os. I did and was given a flat "NO". Turning up with an exempt or tourist visa and being refused the Non-O would have implied another trip or a move to another province; expensive.

I like Vietnam but the 3 month at a time Visa policy worries me more than the 1 year I get in Thailand.
You have to ask yourself how long they will continue to allow it if scores of Expats de-camp to there given that Cambodia has been talking about stricter checks on the 1 year "Business Visa" & even Philippines is debating whether to make changes to bar extensions to Visa on Arrival (i.e. the Visas that people from India/China etc... get)
Hardly the basis for a long term retirement plan (I know, neither is Thailand anymore).
And, oh so strangely, no one even mentions the excellent Malaysian option. M2H is still up, running and well designed, as far as I know.
Is is for lack of cheap p!!!y there? Bacon I managed to get.

its more important to look at the yearly injection into the economy,
i think its reasonable to assume a falang on average spend 50k per month,
600.000 per year, then multiply with how many there are for the yearly injection.
this is typically not investment, but pure spending,
unlike chinese that typically spend their money wisely on investment
You are correct in that the OP is flawed when he mixes up assets in banks with GDP, which is an indicator of activity. By spending our money here we tend to create demand which may be met either by local production or imports.
However I believe your figure of 50k is too low I'd expect it to be at least double that, in average. If it was 50 it would give us a clue to understand the current trend to push us out of the country.

Eh! yes, and this is called "democracy".
The people exercise the powers that are lacking in the dozing snobards who do not even know how a government works and who lay out aberrant laws.
You just have to read or hear their aneries to be convinced.
Yes! we must justify their presence in government.
The people, who nonetheless have a few million souls, many of them graduates, do not have to undergo the uncultivated, irresponsible side of "representatives" of a country.A striker is always professional, if not, it is a solidarity.
No, strikers are not paid.
On the other hand, if the representatives of government commissions do not attend meetings, they are paid.
Is that the answer for you?Guess I must apologize to everyone here for prompting that,

France in turmoil with the longest ongoing protest in history "Yellow Vest", presiding over a France with "No Go areas". Maybe it's French humour but it's totally lost on this Jock.
Obviously your research didn't go far enough. France is in dire need of the reforms that have been carried out in most neighboring countries under leaders such as Thatcher, Kohl, Schroeder, Merkel, and others. All of Macron's predecessors have made weak attempts to reform the country but they all have given in to the pressure of the street, which is a toxic French feature . Macron is the first one who stands his ground, within reason.

Chirac did something similar some 25 years ago, it improved his popularity ratings a fair bit. My guess is that Macron did his homework before coming to Israel.
But that won't take away from him that Macron is the best president France has had since Pompidou.

I don't wish to keep sticking nose in but I have one question.
Cannot folk that originally entered Thailand on a Non O-A see the writing on the wall. It's obvious. O-A is history.
Many folk here eg USA and other countries you can obtain good health cover.
Why subject yourself to this Thai useless health insurance. Change to Non O based on retirement or whatever. Simple. F em
And what makes you so sure that Non O for retirement, and possibly marriage, will never be affected by this health insurance nonsense? Those people on Non OA who are getting insurance now might end up being the wise ones. Remember we aren't getting any younger, the insurance you get today might become impossible to get in a few years time.

After all, according to some, Immigration is "out to get us all".
Hmmmm, I wonder how it is that most people seem to be able to get through there without any problems if Immigration is really trying to get rid of us all.So, how about people on OAs who, some for decades, have had Health Insurance and who must now buy some useless anusholed Thai insurance?

Indeed we westerners would be tempted to refer to something like an "Extension of stay" process, while it has always been an "extension of stay ritual", to which every IHP (Immigration High Priest) wants to add a personal touch.

Reckon that if one questions the right of established EU citizens to stay in UK, one should accept bravely all the measures taken by the Thais to incited cheap charlie retirees to leave Thai soil. Guess that the UK retirees in France and Spain should be scrutinized too.

English is my third language, my luck is that early in my career I became aware that anyone with a wee bit of ambition had to learn The international language. Which I then did to the best of my limited linguistic ability.
When it comes to the poor English proficiency of Thai people, I just feel sorry for a people that refuses to see opportunities beyond it's borders, out of a mixture of arrogance, complacency and laziness.
