This has me thinking, that an approach that could be adopted by MoH would be to in essence 'contract out' certification of International Health Insurance to Thailand hospitals such as Bumrungrad, Bangkok Hospital, Vichaiyut Hospital, etc ... where a foreigner who has superior International Health Insurance goes to the hospital, and for a nominal fee of a few thousand baht (charged by the hospital) would have the hospital check the foreigner's insurance, have the hospital stamp/approve an official Thai document for the foreigner, and that would be accepted by Immigration as proof of health Insurance meeting/exceeding the Thai government health insurance requirement.

Would that not be a win-win scenario? The hospital gets more money.  Thailand gets people with far superior insurance who will use their insurance supporting the Thai hospitals.  And the foreigner for a nominal fee (few thousand baht ? ) is not forced to dump their superior insurance for Thai specified insurance which is not as good.

Of course this is not true for everyone, but it would be good for those of us who already have excellent health and insurance for us and our families, and who were never a burdon on the Thai taxpayer.

I wonder if such an approach was ever considered?   One difficulty I see is International Health Insurance is not always structured in terms of in-patient/out-patient, so having a hospital such as Bumrungrad, Bangkok Hospital, Vichaiyut Hospital  confirm the Thai in-patient/out-patient requirement is met, may not be so easy (and hence not doable for a few thousand baht).

One key to get the large private hospital involved is to convince them that, because of the ridiculous level of coverage provided under the OA scam, they will gain absolutely nothing as only public hospitals would be within range for the policy holders. In fact they'd be likely to lose business as good customers, like me, could leave the country altogether. The fact that Bangkok hospital and Bumrungrad have the same shareholder could also make things easier.

I believe because it is deemed too difficult for Thai immigration officials to verify the international insurance (in a foreign language) presented to them.  How can they be certain the insurance is as good as it is claimed to be, if they can't read the insurance documents? Its far easier to verify insurance on an already validated list.

I don't blame immigration, it is the MoH who should provide, an "Insurance certification office". This could have been achieved easily. At Bumrungrad or Bangkok hospital they have easy access into my Insurance details and accept this as guarantee before admission. A similar setup could be used by MoH to issue certificates to be handed over to Immigration. They don't want to do it because there is no money to be made from it. T.I.T once more.

I see the Thai bashing mouth breathers have come out in force. Bang on about how much smarter they are than the average Thai but can't even do some basic research into this story.... just the same old knee jerk bs 'Thais are lazy' 'Thais are stupid' 'Thais can't do anything by themselves',

There are legitimate criticisms of some parts of Thai culture and society, especially towards the ones running the show. But thread after thread just get hijacked by morons spouting nonsense about all Thais are like this and that..

As stated by others, there is more to this story, this guy has some dodgy things going on, so try and do some actual research and stop being lazy

But dogs unbelievers get bashed too, and called names in total impunity.????

I hate the way they call any one that is not black or Asian a farang ! Why not be more definite and name their nationality ? Oh, its too hard to find out !

There is worse, I watched the TV report in Thai, I don't understand the language but "Mia Farang" comes up about every second or third word. One would expect Khun xxxxx, but no it seems that our wives lose their humanity once they marry one of us. We have here the epitome of xenophobia.

    Hi Lim Yuan Hai,

Is your wife a thai national?

If so, the solution is simple > When your extension of stay of your original OA Visa is due, apply for reason of MARRIAGE (instead of for reason of RETIREMENT).  The requirements are different, but an extension for reason of MARRIAGE does NOT require health-insurance.  And of course the lower financials to be proven (400K in the bank instead of 800K when using the money in bank method, or 40.000 THB instead of 65.000 THB when using the income method), are a nice bonus too.

Peter, by now everyone would know that Non-O or move to "Thai wife extension" are a good stop gap measures. But probably not enough in the medium/long term.

    Thanks for your efforts anyway.

Just change visas as many other have done.

I compiled a comprehensive roadmap to switch from a Non Imm OA - retirement Visa to a Non Imm O - retirement one, addressing all issues and options

I can't understand that grown up people can ignore the fact that Non-O and Non-OA cannot coexist with differing requirements regarding health insurance. They will fix it one way or the other, and in the current anti-farang context my natural pessimism leads me to think it will be "the other".

Well done, now there is someone who thinks outside the square and looks for loop holes in the system, let's just hope they don't spread this madness to other visa/extensions, or at least grandfather them so current expats are secure.

As I said above the "spread" has a good chance to happen. Therefore for someone in my situation, 67 with a couple of pre-existings, it would be wise to get the extra useless cover for about one percent of my income. I am already spending 8.5% on health covers for the whole family anyway. And I don't believe they will accept existing covers in any near future as there is way too much money to made from the existing scheme/scam. This is what drives me mad, as the requirement for HI is totally legitimate but they implement their policy in their totally frakked up Thai way.

So that is your rationale for not paying medical bills? Even the lowest income expats easily make up for what the thai govt. lost in providing free care to foreigners? What we spent in the economy easily wipes out the Farang that don’t pay. That is probably the least logical exculpatory explanation I’ve ever heard? And if you perceive Thailand as an excrement hole, why in God’s name are you living here? There are 195 countries in the world to choose from. Certainly you could find one that better suits your needs.

Excrement hole sounds just like a Trump right wing supporter would say.

Yes the whole thing looks a bit like someone deciding to eradicate pornography by poking out the eyes of the entire male population.

Since you have 5,805 posts I am assuming you have been in Thailand for some time. Since it has been in the news and posted on Thai visa forum it should come as no shock to hear that dead beat farang have cost the Thai medical system billions in losses from unpaid bills.

Well, since you have only 63 posts you probably assume you are a fast learner. But the very official figure of unpaid medicals bills is 500 000 000 Bahts. So if a deabeat Farang spends, hence brings into this excrement hole 500 000 Bahts a year, 1000 deadbeats will cover the loss for the Thai economy. And most of us spend a lot more then that.

Lots of things in Thailand are counter-intuitive, at least to us Westerners.

My main account is a savings account in my name only, but in the passbook on the very last page, it has a transparent strip that has my wife's signature so she can access the account also. I did that, to be truthful, to allow her easy access in case I am out of the country, incapacitated, or dead. ????

Sorry I wasn't clear. What I meant is that ensuring we have 400 KTHB in the bank isn't a proof that we take care of our families. They should look at respective incomes, common assets acquisition, schooling,  etc..
