If one compares the magnitude of the disaster, to the relatively low number of casualties on can only be admire all the people involved. I think one of the clues is on the picture below: Australians have the brain to understand that a mindless stampede only makes things worse. These people weren't in a rush to get drunk with their families for new year, they were in the process of saving their lives.

but 'fleecing us' was for sure not the sole reason for enforcing health-insurance
If forcing people to get a totally useless extra cover on top of an excellent health plan, isn't fleecing; so what is?
Ok, maybe "sole" was the keyword in your statement, I am past the "diplomatic" stage after 5 years in this dump.

Where in Thailand is Siem Reap?
I guess this confirms that all the foreigners are moving over to Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.

We have to understand, that the ten or twelves companies that have gotten MoH approval have made an investment to achieve this. There were in all likelihood sizeable brown envelope involved as this is Thailand. Now they will see their prospective market shrink as many of us will shift to Non-O, so one can easily understand the kind of lobbying that they will make to regain their lost advantage. The whole thing was inspired by one sole motivation: fleecing us and they won't stop before they get what they wanted.

Seriously ? 165k a month and cannot get 400k in the bank ? I live on about 50k month with the wife and kid and still save about 10k a month easily . If you cannot save 50-100K a month for a few months you have serious money issues !
Don't know who got money issues here?
There are obviously diverging paradigms here, you seem to believe that you have to live like a native while @Go4er has probably taken an approach similar to mine, which was to transpose my former lifestyle to Issan. Wasn't completely successful, even though it cost me more than 165k a month.

Medical insurance is not a waste as I had a motorcycle accident and spent 10 days in the hospital plus many physical therapy appointments and did not cost me anything as my Thai medical insurance picked up the complete bill.
It is an absolute waste when you have to get a second totally useless Thai insurance, just to stay in the country. While the insurance you've had for 28 years has been subsidizing Thai private hospitals at a rate of half a million yearly, for the last five years.

I guess that people in charge for town planning lay pipes, and then go to the Wat to make raw sewage flow upward.

Dunno how to help you there, but there is an immigration hotline you can use. I give you my full moral support though as these illegals workers are the root cause of many of the difficulties we experience with immigration.

I think I'm OK, I drive at least 12k every year and have done so since 2004. I drive a great big truck with plenty of power so I have an advantage over smaller vehicles, I'm also not a motorbike which means I'm in the 20% rather than the 80%. I also don't drink plus I rarely drive at night plus I'm a defensive/aggressive driver with plenty of experience. I estimate my risk of dying in an RTA is probably in the low single digits and I can, no pun intended, live with that.
Why do are you so concerned about dying, have you wondered about what would happen to you and your family if some idiot motorcyclist decided to kill himself with your car?

Had to do some research to find out what an "ignore list" is, obviously then mine is empty. So have a go at me if you wish. I reported a couple of times some blunt insults and they got dealt with, one way or the other. I guess some people use "confused" or "sad" emoticons to express disagreeing opinions, which is fine with me. I had also quite a few posts, which didn't break any rules that just disappeared, but I guess that's just another issue altogether. Some people just can't stand inferences..

Well that's about what I used too make in my previous life, in IT. I had to cope with the stress of IT projects because I got nasty piles.

Zero - it’s easy enough to ignore the trolls & idiots or choose to either ignore or discuss issues with posters who’s opinions I don’t agree with.
It’s healthy to read the opinions of others.
Only those incapable of ignoring the obvious trolls & idiots or incapable og entering intelligent discussion may be compelled to use the ignore function.
Or perhaps those who only want to read what they agree with from likeminded posters utilise the list to filter out those of frequently differing options, kind of like only watching your favorite news channel to confirm your bias.
Yep, I am working along the same lines, and I even manage to cope with silently disappearing posts.

I can't speak for others, but for me, I could not live in a Muslim country. The culture surrounding that religion and that goes hand in hand with it, is not one that attracts me and in some Middle Eastern countries, actively repels me.
Funny you say so, I have have never stayed long term in Malaysia, but I have some past with Algeria and Morocco, and both countries are way more receptive and open to western values than Thailand. The only thing that's western in Thailand id GREED, but works only for a tiny minority.

The dogs were semi-domesticated - thus harmless; consequently, children loved to play with them.
Yeah, just tell that to the family of the kid who got killed by a stray, last week in Buriram.

Use a bow and golf ball "pointed" arrows to salve dog problems. I find the weird fascination with dogs, particularly in a third world country difficult to comprehend. Need for servility? Or is it delegated agression?
