Catfish is one of my favorites too.. Marinaded in garlic, turmeric and other thai ingredients then barbequed slowly on charcoal.

Catfish is an oily fish (like mackerel, herring and salmon etc ) so is rich and tasty. Not like pappy frozen white fish.

catfish is what street stalls and Esarn people eat ? The one that we see on stalls that also sell barbecue chicken ?

You've just described one of my favorites.  Deep fried catfish, served up with hush puppies and cole slaw, with french fries optional.  Dipped in red cocktail sauce  with extra horseradish.  Washed down with half a gallon of fresh brewed unsweetened ice tea with a slice of lemon.

The catfish is bland and tasteless, so it picks up the flavor of the spices in the corn meal breading.  In fact, if you can taste the fish, it's probably time to throw it away.  There's lots of excellent meals out there that start out bland and end up famous.  Another one is blackened redfish or grilled seatrout.  Bland fish that end up legendary.

Why eating this fish if its bland ?  Put your sauce on bread !

I have seen panga-fish (or whatever they call it) on the menu...And i would even eat it if i knew it wasn't frozen before.

Seabass or barramundi or snappers also come from fishfarms, did you know that? Maybe even more fish which we thought came from sea.

Salmons in Norway also live in netfarms and they even give them coloragents to have the nice pink salmoncolor.

What i don't understand about seafish is how old it is...It's caught at the border of Thailand/Indonesia, goes to a collectingship which keeps it for 8 days, goes to land to the auction (i guess) and finally gets shipped all over the world as being fresh fish.

I wonder how long and how they can keep a fish fresh for so long without freezing it.

This week i saw (on discovery channel) a new program about Greenpeace where they investigate the fishingindustry in Asia...There's still a lot that we don't know.

It seems that you do not know that ALL salmon from norway are fed with pesticide to kill the skin disease that they ALL have in farms...

Also, all fresh fish kept in ice are not so fresh anymore, they are almost frozen !

Any fish that I order is fresh and has the head and tail attached.. Who wants to eat tasteless white fish with the texture of damp blotting paper ?

    No thanks.

It seems that many people want, because every single supermarket in Thailand is full of pangasius...

And it seems that some people know how to hide that it is a trash fish by cooking it... this is why all restaurants can sell this shiiiteee.

  5. Hello,

I guess that anybody knows that fish fillets in all restaurants are dirty and cheap pangasius from Vietnam.

Cheap as it is, there is no doubt that restaurants serve anything else (and if you want to know what restaurants sell, check your local makro!).

But I have never seen any restaurant writing on the menu PANGASIUS. So it's a complete scam. Please tell me what you were thinking to eat ? Dory maybe ? Yes, in your dreams !

Now the question: are we sure that Pangasius is not bad for health ? I mean not worst than all the shiiiteee that restaurants sell anyway ?

    Thank you.

I just went to a shop called DashcamThailand in Minburi whose owner speaks fairly good English, almost coming home with a new dash cam.  I narrowed my choices to 5 models including Vicovation OPIA2, but knew nothing about this dash cam I found at the shop and almost overlooked it and never cared to know its feature and spec because I didn't like the style and cheap finish.  However, it is fairly new model from a well-established, seemingly reputable brand VIOFO and while its features are basic, its spec and quality seems too good to be true for 1,900 Baht, not to mention it had one of the most important feature for me - no need to attach to the film-attached windshiled (comes with a rear view mirror mount aside from usual suction cup mount and 3M adhesive mount).  Here's why I thought it's highly recommended and suitable for Thailand, if you don't mind its style and finish.

    1. Good video quality day and night, but particularly at night (only up to 1,080p and 30fps).

    2. f/1.6 fast lens with Sony Exmor IMX323 CMOS sensor (no wonder the good night video quality)
    3. Integrated Capacitor, therefore high heat tolerance (tested in up to 59℃ temperature and promoted as "for warm weather" dash cam in the YouTube video review).
    4. 3 different mounting methods - suction cup, 3M adhesive and rear view mirror attachment
    5. All that for 1,9000 Baht,

However, while it has capacitor built-in to save the video files without fail, without a built-in battery its clock will go dead and will need to reset time if the engine ignition is off for more than two days - so I was told.  The optional 500 Baht GPS dongle for GPS logging will reset the time every time you turn the ignition, however.

I was too happy to buy it just for rear view mirror mount but didn't get it in the end.  Why?  because I found out during installation the rear view mirror mount interferes with the tab for my rear view mirror's anti-glare day/night tilt.  :saai::sleep:

Here's the review video just posted yesterday by a famous dash cam reviewer Car Cam Central.

G1W is not viofo, it's only called G1W and is the most famous cheap acceptable dashcam in the world.

    Everybody knows it.

A 2nd thing is to do nothing. Stop visiting the lawyers, tell her you dont want a divorce. She will know this means no money. Then later down the line when she starts behaving negotiate through the friend and do the divorce.

This is the best solution ! So weird that so many people cannot think about it !

Yes thank you, actually I was looking at the HuaHin ferry. You may have noticed I mentioned it a couple of times in my post? Did you see that part where I wrote 'Pattaya-Huahin is a reasonable idea because it's an obvious short cut.' ?

You're right the ferry is a good alternative to risking your life in the deathvans. And I was saying this is epecially right in the case of the Pattaya-HH ferry because it's such a good short cut, taking only 2 hours compared to 6 hours on the road.

But the Sattahip-K.C. ferry doesn't have the same comparison at all. In fact it would almost certainly take longer than the current method.

I think the idea is nice but in reality you're still going to need to get from wherever you are to the port in Sattahip, presumably via deathvan right??, make sure you get there at the right time of day, stand around waiting, dick about with boarding etc wait for everyone and then be prepared to cross the sea for erm... well you say Pattaya-Huahin is 2 hours, this is double the distance so 4 hours easy and hope it's not too full of people and hope the sea isn't choppy and you don't have people puking all round you.

I think most would just choose to extend the road portion by a couple of hours, get there quicker and skip all that hassle thank you very much ?

Luckily not everybody "think" the way you do, or we would still live as in 1920...

Whatever ! 4 or 5 hours on a boat to Koh chang is better than 4 or 5 hours on the roads !

Any other idea is plain stupid.

Glad to hear they have improved things. I only went the once about 10 years ago and when I came back into Thailand I ask the IO if there were any toilets , he got someone to show me a wooden hut in the jungle somewhere in no mans land. Not a pleasant experience.

In those days Ban Laem was certainly the better option.

BAN LAEM is still better until they finish the construction at BAN PAKARD jungle.

There are 2 crossings in the area, Ban Laem and Ban Pakard. I always preferred Ban Laem as Ban Pakard was a bit primitive but that may have changed. At Ban Laem there is a service area directly opposite immigration with a toilet block , free parking and a rest area. It was always a much better market area. It is not much further and could be a better choice if driving yourself, I have normally been in and out in about half an hour.

You would be well advised to use one of the agents, saves a lot of hassle. Should be be 200 baht, they may ask for more but push and they will give, particularly when its quiet. They will want paying in Thai baht.

If you decide to go to Cambodian immigration you should also pay in Thai baht. I know it is more but a friend of mine insisted on paying in USD and they kept him waiting for 2 hours before he got his passport back.

    Good luck.

They ask 1500 Thai baht when the visa is only $35 USD.

I never pay with baht and they give me back my passport instantly.

Not quite what you're after but try breakfast/brunch at Hotel Danmark off Jomtien Beach Road (in the half-soi after soi 7).

They have Thai dishes which are mostly vegetarian (at least you can pick the meat out), soup, simple salads, breads, jams, cereals, various pickles including beetroot, cheese, eggs to order (dont know if you are vegan or vegetarian), yoghurt, decent coffee, juices and a rather nice cream fruit salad. And lots of porky things which you can ignore. 190B. Closes at 12.

I would say it's a good few steps up from Lek.

Interesting. You mean that it's well worth 190 thb ?

    Thank you.
