  1. Ok, back to topic, my favourite singer in Tawandang, no critic allowed :D

    5208414619_af0585f793.jpg

See , you can do it!

p.s. "no criticism allowed" is Mod language

Nice shot and a lot of atmosphere (reflection free also!)

    Bastard - I like that a lot!

  2. And I like it, shows the sanuk side of Thai people

    Whatever

I think you should take photography a bit less seriously Vulcan.

When you comment about pictures taken by people who have no intention to be professional.

    But advice is sure appreciated.

You post an image - I attempt to help by placing an opinion - then it does not meet your approval and I become a cynic!

Constructive criticism pertains to education - in some cases!

I was offering an opinion wherein I thought the image may have more impact.

Are you so adept that you are beyond advice!

I will NEVER take photography "less seriously"

    It's an art worth defending!

  3. I think the "reflections" (aka billowing smoke trails) were the potential essence of the image but unfortunately have been overshadowed by the dominance of the static truck

The rule of thirds (Kan Win!) has worked against you here by placing too much emphasise on an insignificant area

Good potential though that may have been improved by freezing the vendor and "releasing' the background.

  4. Went to Tawandang again this week and it is sure fun after 11 p.m. :D

The lighting and colour rendition is good but the image is lacking atmosphere/emotion - it's just too static!

Maybe a slower shutter speed would have injected "life" into this situation

    just my $0.02

  5. Vulkan, that was exactly what I was looking for but that the dimensions would be so dramatically different, like shown in the Velvia=60MB I would never have thought. Now I understand why I could do mega blow ups from my Agfa Scala slides. I dont think that any extrapolation program could artificially create so much from nothing, i.e. no existing pixels.

I guess that settles my dream to have mega blow up from a 6MB file.

But can you give a guesstimate how big one can go with 6MB assuming you want poster quality?

I assume you're referring to the cameras native resolution of 6mb.

Also it depends on the dpi output elected - the higher the dpi the smaller the print (trade in for quality)

You can see all the changes in PS by going to Image/Image size and UNCHECK the RESAMPLE box. You can then type in whatever resolution you desire and the document size will change but the pixel dimensions will not. Then you elect quality v size.

Typically 6Mp will produce as 3072 x 2048 pixels. This will print as:-

    180 dpi = 17.067 x 11.378 inches

    300 dpi = 10.24 x 6.827 inches.............

    .........and numerous other configurations.

The maths are to divide the pixel size by the desired resolution to establish print size i.e. 3072 divided by 300 = 10.24 (etc)

Albeit that the industry standard output is 300 dpi it's worth noting that "most" desktop printers optimise at 260 dpi.

In conclusion I would say the answer is that a 6mb image will print at 12 x 8 in general terms and "poster size" would fail.

  6. The older shots are done with a Canon G, 6million pixel, now I use more Panasonic TZ10, with 14 mm pixel.alll highest resolution.

Still don't understand correlation old 35 mm film and digital. E.g. I used a lot Ilford XP2 , wonderful b&w film. Did enlargements of up to 1m x1,5 m on photo linen . Not too much detail required.

Assuming an equally large sensor 24x36mm , how many pixel will equal the same detail? Grain is a given if used artistically.

In other words what pixel value will give the same quality output, be it Kodakchorme 64 or whatever.

When enlarging a negative beyond x you get grain but also no info. If you extrapolate with photoshop pixels new artificial pixel will be created, which still should be better in theory than no info but grain.

This brings me back to my question

    - by how much you can enlarge x pixel, before it becomes in-viewable at a distance?

    - are there better tools for extrapolation than Photoshop?

In this context the NY Times article from David Pogue is interesting

    http://goo.gl/n0wep

He argues 10mm pixel will yield a print of 15x 20 inches. If that is a basis for an non-extrapolated print adding a factor of 2 ought be doable, or not?

I'm not really sure what you're asking but maybe this will help.

I still shoot film and also use a 21mp digital camera.

The digital camera produces a 16 bit 300 dpi TIFF file of some 120Mb

At the same time a scanned 35mm slide, using the above parameters will produce a 178Mb file

With regards to upsizing PS Bicubic smoother is regarded as the safest to avoid interpolation artifacts i.e. jagged edges

Conversely Genuine Fractuals is highly regarded as is Topaz for upsizing although I have no experience of their use

Turning to detail comparisons i.e. resolution and resolving power, the general consensus is a digital image of 60Mp NATIVE is required to equate to a 35mm Velvia 50 iso slide.

There's a very good evaluation shown on the Luminous Landscape site (Here) comparing 2 x 40mp high resolution digital MF camera's and an 18mp FF Leica M. The Leica was sharpest!

  7. Craigslist is the definitive scammers list, as most people in the know- know, so I'd avoid/ignore this at all costs.

The 55-200 is a very soft (read crap) lens. You will be disappointed!

In real terms anything above 3x zoom is a severe compromise on quality - re-adjust your thinking for IQ.

    What camera are you using?

    Cropped/FF?

This is more significant than cost.

  8. Birthdays and Happy so

Hi ho and a jolly welcode to all you surfwide'n interwebber lopers. Here beholdy manifold things Stanley Unwinmost - all deep joy and thorkus for great laugh'n tittery. O yes.

    Lovely Daddy from me.

    Professor Sir Stanley Unwin

    Hi Vulcan! How's Hua Hin???????

Wet, humid, hot, sticky - perfect mate!

  9. Bit of a long shot but no harm in asking.

I'm a keen photographer shooting both digital and film and wonder if there are other "snappers" in the area interested in a few occasional "get togethers".

I was thinking not so much a camera club but a few photo-shoot trips and maybe a meet up to chat cameras, techniques now and then.

I'm quite happy meandering around on my own but it would be nice to meet like minded at times.

    Anyway PM me if interested.

    Thanks

  10. Don't know about snooker but cycling around HH is very popular and as stated a few good shops for supplies.

The soi dogs are a pain if you're out at night but other than that no problems.

Great way to beat the weekend traffic as well.

I was never really much of a cyclist back home in the UK but throughly enjoy the experience around here.

  11. I saw a little business in Samui some years ago that surprised me.

It was one of those photo booths were you can subsequently acquire instant prints stickers etc of many different sizes.

The young Thais (especially girls) and kids were absolutely queuing up. Stickers for their phones, laptops, handbags etc. Fun type stuff.

Just a young girl, a computer, the photo booth and that was it. Thb50 type of price range

Based in Tesco's and takings c.Thb10,000 per day and rising.

Maybe the digital age has killed this.

    Just a thought.

  12. My Thai family are happy with it (lots of their kind of stuff) but having moved from UBC I'm very disappointed

It's cheap for sure - Thb 2500 per annum as opposed to Thb 1500 per month - but you get what you pay for - and you don't get much!

Frankly - it's crap for ferrang viewers.

Not a clue what's coming on (no magazine or menu search)or indeed what time it will start. Old and obscure movies "sometimes" in English but not guaranteed.

    No sports coverage as such.

Reception and overall quality very poor.

I'm most definitely debating UBC re-connection!
