  1. Police urge holding 9 key anti-coup protesters

    Thursday 26 July 2007 06:08:32 PM (GMT+7:00)

BANGKOK, July 26 (TNA) - Claiming that police intelligence officers have sufficient information that anti-coup protesters plan to march on Privy Council president and former prime minister Gen. Prem Tinsulanonda's residence and create unrest again Friday, police Thursday urged Thailand's Criminal Court to issue warrants of detention for nine leading demonstrators.

So thats one way of advetising the march to the rank and file... :o

  2. I feel it unfair to tar "The Thais" [a country of what, 62 million?] with the same brush. I am quite convinced there are many decent Thai citizens who would condemn these disgusting conditions in their home country and indeed anywhere else in the world.

Well, where are the protests by 'decent Thais' against the authorities in CM and Phuket? Where are the letters of complaint? Where are the debates on television? These are all signs in a civilised country that there is dissent against such policies. Yet in Thailand, there are no such signs...

You make a fair enough point there, but keep in mind the country is still in the hands of the Military who are not used to debate or being asked unpleasant questions.

The first law (Phuket) was enacted well before the Coup, yet still none of the above happened...

  3. A few more:

"I wish Stanley Baldwin no ill, but it would have been

much better if he had never lived."

Sir Winston Churchill about Stanley Baldwin

"I am prepared to meet my Maker. Whether my Maker is prepared for the great ordeal of meeting me is another matter".

"A modest man, who has much to be modest about".

Sir Winston Churchill about Clement Atlee

And finally, for some of the members of this board:

"A fanatic is one who can't change his mind and won't change the subject."

  4. AND to the other poster who mentioned the great deal of the $7 cigarettes in Abu Dhabi??? Well, you're encouraging people to fly 5,000 miles away to save a few shillings on cigarettes. But rather than lecture, I would just ask if you could post your latest heart/chest x-ray for us to evaluate.

You muppet. If you had actually read my post, I said I was a non-smoker, in fact I have never smoked, so I would guess that my "latest heart/chest x-ray for us to evaluate" would be quite a healty one.

Also, if you had read my post, you would see that my airline's hub is Abu Dhabi (which means that you have to fly first there, before making your onward jeorney).

And if you could read maps (is inability to read the recurring feature here? :o ) you would see thaqt Abu Dhabi is approximately 3000 miles from BKK (not 5000). And no, I am not, quite clearly, attempting to recommend anyone to board a flight of 3000 miles just in order to buy a box of fags. I state the latter, as you have misunderstood everything else in this thread, so I am trying to be clear as possible.

    Muppet.

  5. How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live.…A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property, either as a child, a wife, or a concubine, must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men.

Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities ... but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science, the science against which it had vainly struggled, the civilisation of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilisation of ancient Rome.

He was well ahead of his time on this one! :o

  6. Back to the OP. I do not smoke, but just pick up a pack of 200 for a friend. Last two trips there has been no stock of virtually all Western brands. Rumour has it that King Power are in Financial trouble following the dispute at Swampybunny over space, the ban on liquids in take-on and general bad press.

I checked prices at Abu Dhabi (my airline's hub) and B&H was $7 US, so cheaper anyway! :o

  7. Here are the datas from BOT (from january to may).

    http://www.bot.or.th/bothomepage/databank/...ance/tab71e.asp

The datas for the semester given by Thai Auto Industry Club show that june was bad (less than 46 000 units were sold, passenger and commercial cars).

That goes against the first statements of BOT regarding may, when they said that they started to see an improvement of private consumption.

And you are shocked that someone may not be telling the truth? What here? In Thailand? :o

  8. Offshore baht must go

But the BOT created it by introducing the currency controls... :o

impossible! some <deleted>' farangs are the culprits :D

Yes - I can see it. Some scheming felang infiltrated the BOT and established the Currency Controls, then profiteered once the dual rate was established. I await some sort of announcement soon that this felang terrorist attack has now been uncovered and righted - by a Thai removing the offending controls! :D

  10. Thai farmers rally for debts suspension

    12:21, July 26, 2007

More than 7,000 farmers gathered outside Thailand's Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives here on Thursday, demanding that the minister speed up decision-making to suspend their debts and support their products.

The demonstration started Thursday morning and caused serious traffic congestion near the area.

Charin Duangdara, a leader of the gathering, said the farmers have asked the government to help them who are suffering from loss due to low prices of agriculture products.

They have asked for suspension of their debts with the Agriculture Bank and for the government to buy their agriculture products at market prices.

However, the protesters said the ministry has earlier promised to consider their proposal, but it is yet to give them the answer. The debt-ridden farmers complained that they are yet to be met by any government representative.

Now this is just the type of group that will be hyjacked by DAAD (or whatever they are calling themselves now) to create mayham...

  11. Anyone can boycott whatever they wish, I guess.

As an adult, I find that I can filter out what I disbelieve and without knowing the "official" line, I can't guess at the real story.

If you view current authorities as an enemy, then understanding that enemy makes sense, no ?

I think the point the OP was making was that a boycott would hit the fools where it hurts - in the pocket! Maybe then they might change. (Ever positive - me :o )
