  1. Not content with introducing a mere 3000 new criminal offences in their decade of misrule, the wondrous socialist state of Great Britain is intent on passing a new law in the next two months that will give couples who are cohabiting but not married the same rights as married people when they split up!

This may have implications if you have been living with a Thai girl for a while and take her to blighty on an unmarried partner's visa.

I do understand that some unmarried women are hard done by when they are kicked out by their men but now it looks like a huge new wave of women are going to be able to rip off men in the UK!

Simply not acceptable to me, anyway!

Yes - I noticed this. Great scam for the PY - go to UK with tourist visa and end up owning the sponser's house! :o

  2. Have been trying to get into my lycos.co.uk email account all day. You can get as far as telling you how many mails you have (at domain www.lycos.co.uk) but when you attempt to click on the link to the mail, held at domain http://mail.lycos.co.uk/ it times out...

    Is it just me?

It's loading from outside Thailand so it's definitely a local problem for you. Probably sort itself out in a couple hours.

    Here's something that may help:

Start/Run type command then type ipconfig/flushdns at the prompt to empty out the old dns cache. Sometimes this helps. Though you never know what screwy things your ISP may be messing with.

I had manually deleted all my offline content as well. Both plans came to nought. I guess that True (in BKK) are screwing something over on this. What they he_ll have they got against lycos mail?!?

  3. I just went through BKK and saw the longest queues I've ever seen at the security checkpoints, just before the x-ray machines, due to the new liquids screening checks being done. Add at least 30 minutes extra to your time for this. Hopefully they'll improve the process as time goes by.

:D Left on the 14th of June at 0035 to Athens. Queue for liquids check is before security check. I had no carry-on luggage and was just told to pass thru the liquids queue. So if you don't want to wait, just carry nothing on board. Your choice.

    :D

And then be left with just the clothes you stand up in when they lose your bags - your choice... :o

  4. But you can't own a house over here (by virtue of the fact you cannot own the land it sits on), <snip>

    Incorrect.

Praise be. JetsetBkk has discovered a way of non-Thais to own land in Thailand.

    That's not what I wrote.

You cannot own the land but you can own the house.

I could be pedantic, but that would simply expose your stupidity. OK, never mind, I will anyway. You wrote "incorrect" to the statement: "But you can't own a house over here (by virtue of the fact you cannot own the land it sits on), if your are not a Thai citizen". Quite clear I was referring to the land to any normal person. Crawl back under from whence you came.

  5. Bt3.6 bn worth of drugs to be burnt on June 26

BANGKOK: -- Relevant authorities will burn down illicit drugs worth Bt3.6billion on June 26, which is the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

Deputy Public Health Minister Morakot Kornkasem Thursday said the illicit drug would be disposed through pyrolytic incineration in Ayutthaya.

"This will not harm the environment," he said.

Morakot said this was going the 35th time that Thai authorities burn down illicit drug seized from drug traffickers, and in all about 1,122 kilograms and 5.99 litres of illicit drugs from 12,672 drug cases would be destroyed.

The amount included heroin, ecstasy pills, methamphetamine pills, cocaine, marijuana and opium.

According to him, there were some other 20 tons of illicit drugs under the care of relevant authorities but they would not be disposed until their cases go to the end of legal channels.

Perhaps some members of the CNS were downwind at at earlier burning ceremony? :o

Cabinet orders Thai Airways to lease, not buy, Airbus planes

Thailand's interim cabinet on Tuesday ordered Thai Airways International to lease eight mid-sized Airbus A330 planes, rather than buy the aircraft as proposed by the flag carrier, officials said.

The purchase of eight mid-sized A330 aircraft to replace old planes would have cost Thai Airways about 30 billion baht (867 million dollars), but a cabinet statement released Tuesday said the aircraft should instead be leased.

A transport ministry official said it was a better solution, as Thai Airways was under financial pressure because of high oil prices.

"The cabinet agreed that operating a lease contract for the A330 for up to 10 years is more appropriate for Thai Airways, by not causing the airline a huge debt for buying the aircraft," the transport ministry official told AFP.

    So.

THAI is hard up, so needs to lease planes. (Sounds like the Thai prawn cancellation from 4-years ago to me)

Taking on a lease in some way avoids creating a 'debt'. Hmmm, can I lease one too and not incur a debt? :D Happy days, flying hither and thither debt free, because it is a lease you see. Thai style.

Junta 'ordering' the board of THAI what to do? Got to laugh. Only in Thailand! :o

  7. The Army is more than the Junta :D like you said the thread is not entitled "Can't the government ...."

I don't know if you missed it, but in October there was a military Coup d'etat in Thailand. The Coup-makers were from the Army, Navy and Air Force and they formed the CNS. To date I am unaware of any Army (or Navy/Air Force) unit that has opposed the Coup and have seen no reports of inter-Army battles.

With this in mind, I think it is safe to describe the Junta as being the Army and vice-versa...

I am really unsure to why you are arguing with me over something so straightforward! :o

    /edit spelling

    again a specious argument .......

The CNS is made up of a small contingent of the military (is it 3 or 5 people?) Your argument would be like saying the insugency in the south is made up of muslims ... so all the Muslim people are to blame :D Which entirely disregards that while the insurgents are Mulsim, the vast majority of the Musims in the south are not part of this ... and that there are Nulsim people all over Thailand.

    to: Ooooo

the sentence you question is pointing out that as far as dealing with the insurgency .... not much has changed. Sondi and the rest were in charge of the same military before the coup and after ... No units (as far as I know) have been pulled out of the south ... and more have been added since last year .. including putting one of the top guys that dealt with the communist insurgency in the past down there to start working on the problem.

Again and again people are crying ... and other than GaryA's silly suggestion of ~give it to them and wall them in~ not much has been even suggested as a way to deal with this. There is little evidence to date that this insurgency is widely supported in the south, but a major crackdown would certainly be a good recruiting platform for the insurgents! They have little regard for the religion of those they kill, which is a fear tactic used to keep people from informing on them.

This is going to lead to a prolonged situation in the south with only 3 ways of dealing with it ....

    1) crackdown ... which in all likelyhood will lead to escalating jungle warfare ...

2)appeasement/negotioation ... recognizing that a large majority of the people in the south are a different ethnic group that as recently as 1945 were made promises by groups outside of Thailand. Giving them more access to development and recognition of their language while still requiring loyalty to King and country might work.

    3) a protracted carrot and stick approach ... more money to funding schools hospitals and infrastructure ... respecting religious differences .. while carrying on counter insurgency efforts. Think of it as policing and propoganda.

The only thing I see as being effective is approach number 2 .... The question is will people's egos let this happen? (What I think will happen is bouncing between scenario1 and scenario3 .... until the head of state has to step in with a plan.)

And all of the above stratagies will not be considered by the powers that be (CNS), as they are too busy plotting coups, counter-coups, internal-coups, supporting coups and presumably coups-a-la-carte in Bangkok!

    Thus the problem gets worse...

  8. Pick up my dry cleaning while your at it you beetroots

My Thai ex went to live in Belfast. She had a face that went red like a beetroot when she was angry. :D

Maybe she has got a Northern Irish accent now. That would stand out, a beetroot saying "NEHVEER, NEHVEER, NEHVEER SURRREYHNDHERRRRR" :o

    Anyone seen her recently? :D

  9. You know, I witnessed a wonderful thai-way face loss last night. The gf had proudly purchased one of these ludicrous, uneven bar-coasters for me, only to be told that I would sooner dispatch it, discus-style, to kill the idiot who blessed it with the intention to be worn (a-la-albatross) around one's neck. She, no doubt, intended to prove that I know nothing of thai culture and fashion by discussing my attitude with the (Thai) manager of a local business, whereupon she was told be he (who cannot be called into question, being such a hi-so Thai) that such garb is only worn by "stupid people who have no brain".

I think that she now rues those thai language lessons of yesteryear that allowed me to relish the loss of face in real time... :o

  10. Hi

I'm planning on visiting Thailand for the first time in August and at the same time I'm considering buying a house out there with the intention of renting in the future. I do however have a number of questions and I'd appreciate the answers of people who are currently living in Thailand (or have in the recent past) and also people already on the property ladder over there.. Or in other words, people with a personal experience of Thailand!

But you can't own a house over here (by virtue of the fact you cannot own the land it sits on), if your are not a Thai citizen, so what on earth do you intend 'buying'?

  11. Dr. Naam, I took the time to read some of shochus' posts and he(she) is indeed a bit of a clown and quite an odd buggar. I think replying to him(her) is a waste of time, so I have stopped doing so. My apologies to the board for going off topic!

basically you are right Vic. but if somebody gets personal and posts stupid lies (like "decent hotel room") one has to react.

Goodness - your up early this morning! Whats up - couldn't afford room service? :o

  12. In the news clipping forum, there's a thread about death threats against Thaksin... but as this shows, there's no need for anyone to do that... he's killing himself.

    As witnessed in these photos:

    agingquickly.jpg

FIFA President Joseph Blatter hands the flag commemorating FIFA's centennial to then Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra during a courtesy call at government house in Bangkok, Thailand, in this Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004 file photo. Thaksin, the former Thai leader, regained some of his lost prestige and political weight by formally announcing his bid for the English Premier League soccer club, Manchester City on Thursday.

    Associated Press Photo

and then compared his physical appearance to this one taken from earlier this month..

    haggard.jpg

The amount of aging that occurred in just a scant 2 and half years is astounding.

From youthful and vibrant to haggard and pale...

A word to the wise John, you are getting a little obsessed. I disliked Mt T with a passion, but resorting to rejoicing in his ill-health is bad taste and not going to win any arguments.

  13. CNS Deputy Secretary General believes Thai society is in danger

The CNS Deputy Secretary General also denied that the CNS lobbied the National Legislative Assembly to prevent it from revising the Council for Democratic Reform's (CDR) 15th Announcement.

Source: Thai National News Bureau Public Relations Department - 21 June 2007

So that means they didn't bother with the nicety of "lobbying", them simply instructed them... :o

  14. CNS Deputy Secretary General believes Thai society is in danger

The CNS Deputy Secretary General believes that Thai society is currently at risk of new forms of threats and new legislature is therefore required to ensure Thailand's national security and alleviate the nation's political crisis. Gen Anupong affirms that new legislature are not aimed at increasing the Council for National Security's power or influence.

Source: Thai National News Bureau Public Relations Department - 21 June 2007

But this will be the effect... :o

  15. Its quite curious why Thaigoon should elect to study in the US, when he believes the education is inferior to that of his native country and he is surrounded by incometetant students.

Perhaps his fabled judgement failed on this occasion... :o
