  1. To sing the National Anthem should be required to get citizenship of any country. Usually, to get citizenship, you should have been there so long allready there should be no problem in singing the national anthem. I took me 3 months the sing the Thai National Anthem fluently, I can only speak a little Thai, but I can sing the National Anthem fluently. Hope other countries have the same requirements......................

  2. The post about changing Zee to Zed so it does not get confused with C, makes sense, but there are too many letters ending in E, like (b,c,d,e,g,p,t,v,z) anyway, so I just let them say Zee. But that was a very good point. I just keep it a simple as possible and believe, Zee is the easiest to learn and sounds better in words. We could also change Bee to Bed, Cee to Ced, Dee to Ded, E to Ed or just leave it alone anyway because that letter is the cause of this, Gee to Ged, Pee to Peeing, Pissing or Ped, Tee to Ted, Vee to Ved and of course, just let Zee be Zed. As I said before, we use languages to communicate so as long as we can communicate and understand each other, it shouldn't matter what form of English we use. As DrFisher pointed out, the correct name of the English, it doesn't matter what the correct name of the English is because wheather or not we call it American or North American English, everyone in this thread has understood what we are talking about. Ahhhh, communication....................

  3. We are 70 KMS from the airport! On the other side of the city in a very un-populated area. Each class has increased by at least 5 - 10 students. KG3 last year havd an average of 28 per class, this year 42 per class! The Thai teachers hate it, but I love it and say the more the merrier! Bring on 100.....................per class :o

  4. When I teach the ABC's, I use the song that they seem to know. But I joke and run very fast through pqprstuv, which they like, and then I hold the notes on wyy and z (of course, zee rhymes with be and bee). Then I sing the sequel they don't know:

    Now I've said my abc's;

Tell me what you think of me!

That wouldn't work if it ended with, "Tell me what you think of Ned."

Likewise, at the end of the "Ha-pee-bwuh-day" song, I like to add dramatically, "and maaaaaany moooore!"

I learned the abc song to end with

maybe next time you can sing with meee.

Which does not rhyme with zed either.

So did I, something like this.............

"Now I know my ABS's, next time come and sing with me" or "Next time won't you sing with me"

I guess there are many different endings.

We learnt a song called the "Hokie Pokie" and it seems that the Filipinos at my school call it the "Oggie Boggie" and when I asked about this, an old Brit woman also called it the Oggie Boggie. So I guess many names and words for many songs, it just depends where you learned. It's just sad for the Thai teachers and studnets when you have six different teachers singing six different versions of the same song................ If can be fun and gets a laugh, but then, they will never learn how to sing the song fluently.

  5. I agree. I think Z or zee is the best way to say the letter Z, the American way. I break it down into spelling the letter, and what ever is easiest wins. To say the letter Z like an American, you just say Z or Zee (two different letters) but to say Z like a Brit, "ZED" or "ZEAD" it actually looks more like a word than a letter. I just think Z "Zee" is a lot simpler and easier to learn, that is why allthough I sound more British, I will always say Z "Zee" like an American. I also think Zebra or Zeebra sounds a lot better that Zedbra or Zeadbra. <deleted> is a Zedbra or Zeadbra anyway? Is it a type of bra or is it the same as a Zebra? :o

  6. Zee and Zed are very common for me to deal with as well. When I'm singing the ABCsong to KG, I always pause before I get to that 26th letter and hope I say the one that the Thai teacher has been teaching, I don't know why. It's sad that there is not specified English to teach at my school, so some classes say zee and some say zed. I am an Aussie and mostly use British English when I speak, except for the letter Z, I never say zed or zedbra, I always say zee or zeeeeebra, like an American. I also spell like an American because most of my schooling years where I was taught spelling was done in America, but then I still spell COLOUR, like a Brit. The best way I deal with Thai adults on the letter Z issues is say "Up to you" they love to hear that. I say, if you want to sound like a yank, say zeeeee, if you want to sound like a brit, say zed. All of my students have chose the brit pronuncitaion, as I think it is more common here for the general speaking public, but one guy loves the USA and is obsessed with sounding like a yank and is the only student I have ever taught that says Z like zeee, the same way I say it. He deliberatly slurs the end of some of his words, especially the ones that end in "er" just to sound american, spit flying out of his mouth and all.................. Oh well, I tell them all, its all about communicating at the end of the day, as long as you can communicate successfully in the language you use and people understand you and you can understand them, that's all that matters, the more perfectally you speak and use the language is just a bonus.

Okay, time to go to bed now............ ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzz

  7. A funny thing happened at my school that I wasn't aware of because I hadn't noticed. From the end of the last school year untill the start of this school year, so about an eight week period, the student population of our school jumped from 900 to 1,500! This seems to be a big increses compaired to the size of the school. Anyway, more students, more money.................

  8. In NSW, Australia, if you want to be a teacher, I think your bachelors degree does not matter, but you need to have studied so many units of the subject that you want to teach. Example, if you want to be a history teacher, as long as you studied enough history units at different year levels in your degree, you can teach that subject. However, after you finish you bachelors degree, you need to do a 1 year graduate diploma in education, which is one step above the grad certificate and one step under the master degree.

    Bachelor Degree

    (Post) Graduate Certificate

    (Post) Graduate Diploma

    Master Degree

So the grad cert and the grad dip are between in bachelors and masters levels in Australia.

Having said that, if you degree is a BEd (Education) maybe thats all you need, I don't know, but if you don't have a BEd, as long as you studied the subjects you want to teach in your under grad degree, you just need to complete the grad diploma in education before becoming a teacher.

    Degrees in Oz

    Bachelors, 3-5 years

    Grad certificate, usually 6 months

    Grad diploma, usually 1 year

    Masters, 1-2 years

these are the normal time frames based on a full time study load.

I guess, every planet, country, state and maybe even school have their own requirements for teacher qualifications just as Universities in every planet & country have different entry requirements and different degree time frames and structures.

So, PB, an American with a BA or BS or any degree not related to teaching would just need a Grad Diploma (1 year FT) in Education to teach in Oz, assuming whatever subject they would be teaching they have studied about in their undergread degree. If they wanted, they could also proably just study a masters program, that would be up to the Uni, each Uni has it's own entry requirements, some less strict than others, but once you have any bachelors degree, most of you work is done.

  9. Unless the school specifically tells you what type of spelling, pronounciation you should use, just teach what ever you use, as long as it is correct.

Would you like a medal? :o

Okay, my biggest problem is that I attended KG-Grade 1 in Oz, Grade 2-8 in the USA and finished high school in Oz, so my spelling and my accent as well as my pronounciation/ pronunciation changes and is VERY VERY inconsistant.

Any ideas on how I could fix it? Also, being the only farang at my school, sitting in a staff room with 19 Filippinos had only made my grammar, accent and everything else worse :D

  10. Thanks Guys,

It was all thanks to the advice I got on here. Gburns was a great help and I would advise anyone to read all the info on this site before you apply. She is coming next Saturday morning and I guess it will be a biglearning curve but I intend to get her to integrate with the large Thai community here in Sydney

    Cheers

    watchoutfarang

Obviously you haven't read what has happened to a lot of people who have encouraged their Thai wife to mix with other Thais in farangland......................... :o

Just be carefull. You might be the farang that needs to "watchout" at the end of the day. Hope all works out. :D

  11. Like others have said. Make her take him to the free govnt hospitals or the 30 bht plan, whatever it is. If she is too proud to bee seen in a govnt hospital for whatever reason, thats her choice and her responsibility what happend to HER son. If you really wanna help, and she knows your poor, just cover any extra costs at a govnt hospital, but doing anything more is stupid on your behalf untill you are absolutly sure of everything, and have more money.

  12. Just name them in the schools you don't recomend thread, we will know the reason why and im sure, if the school is run by Thais, they would never look on here to find out and if they did, they would have to link this thread with the schools you don't recomend thread and still work out who you are! Honestly, just name them in the other thread so we can all be aware. This type of behaviour is common and it seems that schools are still trying to call all the shots, even when they are desperate. Shame on them, they need to be blacklisted!
