  1. Thailand's culture trains Thai ladies to take care of their husbands. They do pretty much control the family and the husband. To take them from Thai society to a western society in my opinion is a great risk. Their western sisters quickly train them to have western ideas. If you want a Thai wife and want her to take good care of you, I'd suggest that you stay here in Thailand with your bride. Why take a chance?

That's a pretty insecure way of looking at things. I'd like to think my marriage is solid enough that it doesn't rely on the fear of her obtaining any type of knowledge. :o

Trying to keep your wife sheltered and ignorant just out of fear she may develop independent thought is pretty pathetic IMO.

So far we've survived living in three different countries quite well. :D

    I couldn't agree more..................

For every Thai girl that leaves Thailand there is a Farang that has left Farangland to come and get her :D

  2. Aussie,,,how about a native English speaker with an electronics degree... :D . ? What are my chances with a TEFL? I'm a likeable guy and can speak Thai also. :o My wife worked for the gov't as a Geologist and could find some good work when we go back. I thought about teaching English just to keep busy and add a bit of income. I'm 46, probably be 50 by the time we go back, maybe I'll just retire and enjoy, huh?

    dave

A native speaker with at least a bachelor's degree will always find work (after the age of 65 it might get harder thoguh) and in a lot of cases a native speaker without any qualifications or just a tefl will find work. The degree and the fact that you're native will make it easier for you to get a work permit, work legally and have some sort of stability in you life there. If you add a TEFL to your qualifications (personally, if you don't you would be wasting possible oportunities since you don't plan to come back to teach in thailand for a few years). If you do your TEFL in your home country (do a CELTA cause its the most recognised worldwide) before you get to thailand you will be set. Now you will be a native speaker, with a degree in any field and a good TEFL. I doubt you would have trouble finding work and getting a work permit, unless you are missing a few too many teeth and limbs.

  3. Forget any single entry 3 month visa. You are married to a Thai so you will be able to get a 1 year multiple entry Non Immigrant O visa (better to get it from your home country, trust me! don't come to asia and expect to be given a one year visa in asia unless you have a lot of money in the bank). With the one year Non O, you can stay in thailand for 90 days at a time for one year. every 90 days you just take a day trip, cross the border, turn around and come back in with a new 90 days entry stamp. The day before your visa expires, do another border crossing and you will get another 90 days, so really you can use the visa for 15 months. Every 15 months you can just go home and get a new 1 year Non O visa and repeat this process forever. Also, regardless of what other people say, you can get a work permit with a Non O visa, I did. So since you are married, forget about working on a B business visa, get the O visa based on marriage and then whether or not you work doesnt matter, but at least you have both options and the visa. To be able to stay in Thailand for good on a marriage visa, get the Non O marriage visa, then go to immigration once in Thailand, if you, your wife or a combination of the two of you earn over 40K THB PM, you can extend your stay in Thailand permanently. If you don't have the income to do that, you will just have to do border crossing every 90 days and take trips home every 15 or so months to get a new 1 year Non O visa. Good luck.

  4. Right now, I have a Batchelors degree in Electronic Engineering and I'm a native speaker.

Please don't take this personally--I have a Masters degree in Astronautical Engineering and supervised many engineers before I got tired of being a small cog in a giant Aerospace machine and retired to Thailand. One of the challenges I faced in managing engineers was getting them to put some effort in writing; they were very intelligent people but grammar and spelling were not priorities for them. Keeping this in mind, I would like to helpfully suggest that you spell it "Bachelor's degree", not "Bathcelors degree", especially when preparing a CV/Resume and in job applications.

This is something of a pet peeve of mine, engineers should be able to communicate clearly and correctly. Of course literary and artistic types should be able to do basic math and think analytically, but that seems to be asking too much of many of them. Let's face it, some of them aren't very intelligent.

I couldn't resist googeling the word "Batchelors degree" and see what came up...........

There is actually a Diploma Mill who spells Bachelor's degree as Batchelor degree! LOL I wonder how many fools have bought one?

    http://www.accredited-non-fake-online-degr...lors-Degree.htm

And for the critic who thinks he is perfect, the OP actually used the spelling "Batchelors" not "Bathcelors" which is what you stated the OP used, which is far off. So if you are going to assert your authority over other people, make sure you don't twist things around, especially spelling, if that is what you are going to criticize :o

  5. You can get a job easily with only a TEFL, work permit or no work permit (which is illegal).

I was working in BKK with a work permit only having a TEFL, my school was able to get me one without a degree. This will depend on how much a school likes you, what other sorts of doccuments you can provide and how good your schools relationship with the MOE is, but it is possible, but ver rarely done. It will be harder for you given your level of English and the fact that your not a native english speaker. Your young age will also help you get a job. I left to go home and get a degree so I would advide you to stay in Germany and get a degree. YTou will be dissapointed if you love it there and want to stay but one day find yourself un-employable because of your lack of degree, so get it now!

  6. It's good to see this thread still up and running.

I might have integrity and be honest and would never do something such as use fake doccuments to get a job or whatever, first of all I would not be happy with myself for doing it and second of all I like to wrok and earn my way into the positions I get, even if it means going home and studying which is what im doing now. However, my hostile posts come from my realistic attitude and although I would not do such a thing, I understand that this is reality in Thailand and these thing happen all the time and will continue to do so. This is backed up by my knowledge of common Thai practises such as lying, corruption, cheatng, etc. and we all know that even the police here are corrupt so with an issue such a one guy (possible a good teacher with a family to support) submitting a fake doccument to get a job, I don't really blame him, especially realising that he may of actually been enchouraged to do so by his Thai employer.

So although I would not do such a thing, I can't blame the guy and if I was in your shoes i would have forgot about it and let him continue teaching if he was a good teacher and had a backgroung check etc.

  7. Good luck with everything mate. If you have more questions that I can answer I will try to help out. My wife got her spouse visa a few months ago and we will be entering Oz in about 8 weeks. My wifes visa was approved less than 20 hours after we submitted so based on my experience there is a few important things I can advise you to do.

#1 and most important; ONLY lodge a COMPLETE application. (too many reasons to list why)

#2 respect the case officer, this will count for a lot.

#3 triple check everything is correct and complete before submitting.

#4 DO NOT LODGE AT VFS........ make an appointment and only lodge at the embassy. your case officer will see you face to face, answer any questions and if you're together, see how you act which can really work in your favor.

So regardless of the quoted time it takes to be approved, it will be up to your case officer, the strength of your application and how she sees your relationship/

  8. I do look forward to seeing REAL pics from the cabin or a seat chart when they become available, since the 2 models they have now are filled down with water tanks to add weight for testing. I know the 787 economy comes with 8 across, most airliners have opted for an unusual 3-2-3 config over a more traditional 2-4-2. So it will be interesting to see and fly indeed (I'm not too keen on the whale jet :o )

In regards to the wings, I can't remember exactaly, but at the time the 777 was produced, they went with the design and wing shape that was more effiicent, that all there was to do with that. I also recall seeing the 777 having wings where the last 20 or so feet fold upwards 90 degrees to make manouvering in smaller airports more easy.

  9. Boeing Co's 777 aircraft for which GE is the exclusive engine supplier

This is incorrect. There are many Boeing 777s that use Rolls Royce Trent 892 and 884 engines.

You are both half correct. GE is the exclusive suplier of engines for the (long range 777's) the boeing 777-300 ER and 777-200 LR only use GE 90 engines.

All other less powerfull 777 models use various engines.

  10. I've done RTW trips a few times and found out they work out cheaper a lot of the time if you plan to cover a lot of distance, but keep in mind you will most likely need to travel around the world in one dirrection so backtracking will be hard. You will always find RTW tickets that suite you, but the more miles you fly, the more expensive.

I just left BKK and I'm going back to Sydney to live but I am currently in the USA visiting family. I found it cheaper to buy a BKK to USA return ticket followed by a one way ticket from BKK to Australia.

Just do a lot of searching on the net................................ but you will need to have your destinations decided or you will never know what option is best.

  11. Those engines are huge. Interesting that the nose looks pointier than other Boeing and Airbus models. Have aerodynamics changed that much in 30 years?

I still reckon the 777 GE90 engines are far more impressive at around 115,000 LBS of thrust. Aparently they are also wider than the cabin of the 737..................

Some 787 pics and a pic of the 777-200LR with the GE90 engines to compare.

  12. Grow up lucky.............. I'm sure there are a few people who don't find everything you say funny. No one makes you go out with this guy so if something as small as this gets you so wound up, I'd just saty at home. I'm sure your friend wouldn't mind.

Anyway, small jokes such as that aren't as embarassing as what the one Yank I used to work with did. On several occasions he went up to nice looking mothers at the school we worked at and without even saying hi would say "I would like to ram my cock into your pussy" and when they didn't understand that he would just simplify it by saying "I would like to have sex with you."

So if someone making litte jokes like you mentioned embarasses you, either ignore it or choose your whore mongering buddies more carefully :-)

  13. Unless you wanna teach Social Studdies, I'd go for the TESOL, but thats my opinion. TESOL would help you get a job overseas in any country, well any masters degree would but the TESOL major would be favoured in non english speaking countries. The social studdies major would give you a better chance of specialising in teaching that subject, but unless that's all you want to teach, I'd get the TESOL because you could do more with that major. After I finish my BA, I will go onto a MEd in TESOL because I think it more usefull to have to teach in other countries.

  14. I would like to enchourgae all of the other posters in the teachers forum to participate in this interview, especially peaceblondie and ijustwannateach.

I just participated in the interview and enjoyed the experience. The person conducting the interview is very polite and is just looking to gather information about "how EFL teachers were using internet-based virtual communities (e.g., thaivisa.com) to learn about and make sense of the decision to move to Thailand and teach."

The interview is confidential and no details are exchanged. The interview is also conducted at a time that suites you and does not take long. You are able to reflect alot about how the internet communities have played a role in your life and teaching career in Thailand.

Anyway, I hope a few other take part in this interview because it is for a good cause and you will learn something from it. Just send a PM to the OP if you are interested.

  15. To be perfectly honest, (and i'm really gonna get flamed here i think) some of the replies here have been, as i've said before, astonishing, especially from so called educators.

I don't know how to quote multiple times, so will just bullet point.

    1) Somebody said that if you pursue a teacher you may end up dead. Isn't that the same in any country? What a ridiculous comment. You think Larry the lorry driver is connected enough to get Somchai the hit man on board for a farang hit? It seems that you dont have much understanding of Thailand yourself.

    2) Aussie 1983. The Royal Thai Government is the body to whom you pay your taxes (hopefully). again, do you really want to live by the mottow 'When in Rome' or do you have your own set of standards and morals that you wish to live by? Your obviously a young guy, judging by your handle, (Im not much older myself!) but i do NOT, ever accept, when it comes to my kids welfare that This is Thailand. I accept it in every other facet of my life. I embrace it as its refreshing still for me after being here for the last 5 years. However, TIT is Thailand doesn'twash for my kids. You also say that this is common. It may be common, but that does not mean that it is the norm, or the required standard.

I do look forward to following this thread as there are good things being posted! And for those who comment that we stay here because we love Thailand, that isn't necessarily true. We stay here because both my wife and i have business interests in Asia (sounds very grand but really isn't!) and we are contracted to base here.

    To respond to your comments;

    1) You missed the point. Of course someone can come after you in ANY country. I never said they couldn't. I just said they were more likely to do it here in Thailand, especially since it's MORE COMMON and CHEAPER to do in Thailand. How many times do we hear of all the tiny problems that have resulted in murders here in LOS, compared to the west or in other countries. If it were the same situation in a western country I wouldn't have even come to that conclusion, because it is highly unlikely, but here in Thailand it is quite easy to conclude that revenge or even a murder could happen as a result of this because it happens more often.

    2) You get what you pay for. There's no point in people complaining about their kids being educated by liers (allthough it is wrong, moraly incorrect, and whatever you want to say) that have used fake qualifications to get the job if the parents are cheap charlies (either by force or choice) and put their kids in a crappy school. If you want a better quality education for your kids, put your hand in your back pocket or zip your lips and just accept the fact that your kid is getting the level of education that you could afford to pay for them.

If this teacher loses his job, most likely he deserves to. On the other hand, another dodgy school will pick him up and the school that got rid of him will hire another dodgy teacher. It will cause less problems for everyone, yourself included if you just re-loacte you kid and spend a bit more money on it's education.

Are you an educator Aussie? The Australian education system is supposedly the best in the world right now. Particularly the state of Victoria.

Cheap Charlie? Good Thai schools actually cost similar to International schools. You obviously didn't read my post very well.

This thread is about a teacher being unqualified, and you are either condoning that as TIT, or dismissing it. Thats plain wrong. May i ask if you are a parent as well as a teacher by the way?

I was an English teacher in Thailand, but I quit my job last month after 2 years of teaching at the same school to return home to earn a degree. I would never be a teacher in Australia so you don't have to worry about my arrogant attitude destroying the reputation of the Australian education system, which I believe is not a good as you make out to be.

To answer your other question, no I am not a parent and I never intend to be one. I have realised that the world is not a nice place to raise a family anymore and with terrorism and other trends, I would not like to bring kids into this crappy world. To me, rasing a family is a "novilty of the past."

I understand where you're comming from and allthough I'm not a parent and will hopefully never be one, I do understand you point. However, if I was a parent, I would never educate my child in Thaialnd. I accept the TIT attitude and accept what happens in Thailand, so if I don't like it, I would move on. I don't think it's my right to make problems for others that have done something that many others do, regardless of how morally incorrect it is.

  16. The 120 hour TEFL course does not qualify you as a teacher, it is justs one of many requirement to teach English in Thailand. Good luck. For an English major I'd have thought your English may be a tad better, which goes to show that just because someone has a major in English does not mean that they can use English 100% correctly.....................

  18. Good point PB. I was asked to submit a false doccument by my school, I just told them no. I said I dont have a degree and I wouldn't work on false qualifications. They ended up getting me a WP anyway without a degree. I proably should have found a better school, but I realised that I will proably be asked to do the same thing at most schools that would be prepared to accept me anyway. I am glad I worked at that school but if I never tried just because the school asked me to do a bad thing, I most likely would have never ended up working in LOS.

  19. I'm a former janitor's helper, fast food cooker, dishwasher-waiter (at age 49!), etc. I also have a BA, a TEFL cert, and have had professional qualifications in two other fields. You do not know who this guy is, and unless you've seen him teach, and know how to judge his teaching, you don't know what kind of a teacher he is. bruceboy, I'm a father of six, and don't know where you're coming from, unless your mind is filthier than mine is.

I am not on a crusade against any one individual. I just wish to know if my step daughter is being taught by someone who is commiting fraud against the Royal Thai Government. If a person is lying to the school and their colleagues and commiting fraud they have no place in education.

You had better gather a small army together because if that's your goal, you had better check the thai teachers as well!

Thats has to be the joke of the day! Well done!

The Royal (corrupt) Thai Governemnt commits fraud against itself. This is thaivisa.com and after reading that, I no longer think you are living in Thailand, or you wouldn't have made such a stupid comment. As Thais would say "This is Thailand" and as Farangs would say "When in Rome." You obviously haven't learn much during your time here, I think you had better go back to school yourself :o
