  1. went to asoke sukhumwit location. i noticed that the sour creme is watered down now (or i hadnt noticed before?) overall its still a good eat although prices are kind of high imho at 120 baht for 3 tacos.

noticed that there is another sunrise being built directly across from the current asoke location. so i guess business must be doing good although it seemed strange as id have thought theyd want to open at nana or sala daeng.

    Thanks for stopping by.

The supplier gave it to us like that and thats all we could get in the city. He blamed the factory and because of the impeding increase in higher price for sour cream. Goes up 50% on Monday so I'm sure Monday they will be giving me the thick creamy stuff again.

As for the price of the tacos, cheapest in town and most anywhere in the World. I can't imagine anyone will be lower anytime soon than 39 baht a taco in Thailand, as chicken and pork has gone up over 50% in the last 6 months. Lettuce, cilantro, and, jalapeños have all gone up as well over 100 %. Tomatoes, onions, you name it, it all costs me more.

Nana in my opinion has seen its better days. Never liked the Sala Daeng area.

    On a positive note

We are very proud that Sunrise Tacos today has made the Bangkok Post themagazine tribute to Bangkok's list of 100 things they believe makes Bangkok the great place it is. Mixing age-old customs, with modern pastimes, hip hotels with ancient monuments and fine dining with street-side eateries, they've tried to get to the heart of the city. 3. Hello experts...I needed your advice about my situation: I know it's probably been asked 100x, but I've searched this forum several times and cannot find the answer.

My question is: I'm an American photographer, wanting to open up a small picture gallery in Thailand.

I've already found a place to rent my gallery...All the supplies, etc. I just need to take care of the legal side of it all now. What documents do I need to get a working VISA? If I can obtain a 3 month working VISA that would work, I could then request an extension if business does well. If it doesn't no problem, I'll just pack up and move back home. I'm 29 (so it's not like a retirement request)

    Please advise...

    Thanks

    Eager Photographer

You'll need to set up a company and get a visa and then a work permit. As an American you can own and manage the business 100% under the Amity Treaty.

In the USA at a Thai Embassy/ Consulate, you can obtain a one year multi entry visa which means you can come and go as many times as you would like in one year but you can only stay 90 days each time. By simply leaving and reentering you get a fresh 90 days.

You will not be able to get a extension of stay permit based on business until your second year in operation at the earliest. That is why you should ask for a one year mlti entry visa.

You will need a letter from a Thai company to get the visa. If you are a serious investor, our firm can help. Feel free to e-mail us at [email protected]

  4. And my thanks to Sunbelt for relaying information to this forum.

    You are welcome.

Just wondering if Immigration in other parts of Thailand are going to do the same? We are going to be heading for Chiang Mai in the near future and would like some clarification.

The same as for CM as they were always following Police Order 606. It was BKk that was not.

Over 50 and easily meet all of the Financial Requirments for "O" retirement visa. But have a DISABLED SON (low IQ) perfect health who is now 20 years old. With his disability he remains my dependent. Please advise if he can live with me based on my Retirement Visa

Sorry, no. Perhaps he can qualify under a medical permit.

    To Sunbelt

What is the rules as you see them re Marriage Dollar amount B4000000 or B40000 a month. In the past I have been Grandfathered as i have been in the system for years. But on my last visit they said i should show B40000 next Time around (10 months from now) instead of money in the bank. Asked why she said just tring to help that we could use the money in the bank instead of just letting it sit there?? I showed her copy's of Police order both Thai and English , but she kept saying she was just trying to help?? What is your read. By the way this was in Tak office.

Each Immigration office has their own rules. Clearly you can use 400K in the bank or income of 40K per month in BKk Immigration. However anything is possible at other Immigration offces.

  5. About two weeks ago, we had a order for 90 breakfast burritos for a International school at 6:45 a.m. ( For a teachers meeting) The breakfast burrito was made with scrambled eggs, potatoes, bell peppers and salsa. The tortilla itself was fried in a egg batter. It went over very well even though I could not use bacon as many were vegetarian.. I made extra fillings to try serving breakfast burritos at the store. No luck. The recipe said it was great freezing it ahead of time and then reheating it. I did and tried the next day, still no luck in anybody wanting it. Then again Thais are not great at asking the customer if they want to try or that its available. Had a chalkboard advertising it.

The third day I myself asked a regular customer if he wanted to try. Made one for myself at the same time and was very disappointed with what the taste was, nothing like when it was fresh. Didn't charge him and threw the batch away from the freezer and haven't tried it since. The problem is we don't get a lot of expats walking by the store in the morning and I need to serve this fresh with a good amount of turnover.

It would be a natural... Sunrise Tacos and a breakfast burrito or taco. A great way to start your day. So far other than the catering it has not gone over well with demand for the breakfast. This is the slow time as well from 4 am. till 11 am.

I could promote it with a poster in the window. Any other ideas?

  6. Sunbelt, do you think all the squawking here made a difference? Or not?

    Couple theory's...

No one ever talked before about a organized protest before with foreigners. This would not of looked good in the World newspapers. I'm positive they were aware of some of the comments.

Change the extension of stay for dependents based on retirement and you had to change the order allowing the fathers under 50 years old with Thai children, being allowed to stay. I have heard it more than once of the paranoia they have, that many foreigners would have a Thai child to stay and less children would be 100% Thai.

It was a power play and some other person/dept won for now.

You decide what happen. Bottom line, good day for the dependants based on retirement in BKk.

  7. The other day after 6 hours, my wife said go ahead and release them. We'll figure out, if we will press charges later.

Strange ways the law works when a member of the general public can order the release or further detention of people held by the police.

In most countries that depends on whether or not the injured party wishes to file a complain or not. In this case it appears they didn't so the end result is the guy walked.

Police held them for the 6 hours as they had no passport. At that time, the police said you want to file charges? As she is in Phuket as we are opening three stores, she said" We won't press charges now as I'm in Phuket but may do so later' Talked with her before she went to Phi Phi Island and before she knew who it was involved. Her thoughts at that time were " Lets not pursue it, 6 hours is enough time. Just hope they have learned a lesson" Wonder want her reaction will be now.

  8. I was very happy to see the sign announcing the expansion near soi 12, good to hear you’ll be keeping both storefronts in that area.

The ever expanding menu is also good, the nacho supreme is pretty good, and the double decker tacos (crispy taco wrapped with a soft tortilla and refried beans) is good news as well – looking forward to it making the standard menu.

    Thanks.

With the crispy and the soft corn tortilla which is in the dough form of 100% fresh ground corn when you order, its very fresh and good . As we cook the corn tortilla when you place your order of “ double pleasure”, i with the refried beans and crispy taco. It holds together the crispy and you get all the flavors of the corn, meat and cheese with fresh veggies.

Only at the Suk 12 location now when I'm around. Soon to be at both locations.

One comment on both storefronts at Suk 12. Many of our customers love the coziness and how they meet so many new people at Sunrise Tacos. Feel we can't get away from that model but for sure, we need more seats for the groups.

  9. Would I be correct in assuming this means that anyone who has recently been refused such an extension on the basis of a new Police Order that never came into existence could apply again for reconsideration under the old regulations which have never changed and remain in effect?

Anybody who was denied or application was not accepted to process in the last 19 days, can now apply.

  10. Now if I could only get a bit more guacamole... I will go back to eating carne asada burritos with guac after I finish my burger reviews :D Taco salad also on my to-do list as this was practically all I ate when I was at uni.

I'm working on a expanded menu at the new location. what else would you like ?

Oh. By the way, "I know Greg" :o

Please don't be starting any fires. :D

  11. Everything is status quo as before Sept 1st 2007 at Bangkok Immigration. The higherups had a meeting yesterday and as no new Police Order has been issued in the Royal Gazette, they'll abide with the National Police Order 606 starting as of today.

Good news for the extension of stay dependents based on retirement as of today. Possibly bad news for parents under 50 years old, because everything is the same until a new police Order comes out( if it ever will ) As of today the window is back open for applicants of dependents and Bkk Immigration is going to follow Police Order 606 even if it is in conflict with the Immigration Act and Ministerial Regulations.

  14. Turns out I do know the guy and have for the last 5 years. Ironically, my wife helped him out at the Police Station 4 years ago when he had problems with his ex wife. He is a bar owner and should of known better. The police already know the name of the bar from the report.

I'm getting it from our staff it was not him that stated the fire but his friend. Also he may not be a Thaivisa member as he was kept saying my name and Thai visa. I thought when hearing it before on the phone, it was from thaivisa.com but I think now, after getting the whole story, he was pointing out he had a Thai visa to stay here. ( In fact its a multi entry visa) and he knew me. Thats why at that time, he felt they should not arrest him.

The friend whose name is Paul is on a 30 day tourist visa exemption stamp and been here since September 8th. Overstayed the last time he was here in March.

Only now do I know who they both are. Was busy yesterday and didn't get a chance to talk with the lawyer who went to the Police Station and must say I'm very surprised.

The other day after 6 hours, my wife said go ahead and release them. We'll figure out, if we will press charges later.

She is in Phi Phi for the day and can't reach her by phone but she'll be shocked as well when she hears..

  15. Where is the best deli meat and sandwich in Bangkok?
i hear the flamer is very nice at subway ! :o

:D The nice flamer whose called "I have no name but I know Greg " The police said even when they released him from jail, his first words were " I Know Greg" Our lawyers have a copy of his passport his Gf brought to the jail. I have not bother to find out who he was was but will tomorrow.

At this point, were not going to press charges. He had 6 hours to think about what his buddy and him had done. It should be sometime before thay start a fire inside a restaurant.

  16. Surprised nobody mention subway (sukkumvt 7/1), i always go there for a night-sandwich after partying al night when im in Bkk. Gooooooooood stuff. :o

thanks. we get in around 2,500 customers a week at this location. Others are getting ready to launch a scud missle as you talked about Subway. :-)

By the way, the roast beef, turkey, steak, meatballs are all imported from Australia or the USA and why the food cost for those items is close to 58% in Thailand!

Have you noticed no more aggressive ladyboys? Put up signs saying no soliciting and has seem to have driven them away.

    http://www.thailandsubway.com/

  17. unfortunately they were out of lettuce (strange, not something one runs out of easily)

Interesting – the original Sunrise location is a fairly regular stop for me. Late last night/ early this morning I stopped in for some tacos; order placed, and they begin working on them next thing I know they tell me they are out of CHEESE – out of cheese at a Mexican joint? Wanted to know if I would accept sour cream as a substitute – I don’t know about ya’ll but a taco ain’t a taco without cheese, no thanks.

You would have thought that would have asked me about a substitution before they started work on making my tacos? I’ll give them credit for not asking me to still pay for the half finished tacos.

I have eaten at Sunrise dozens of times and this is the first time I have ever had any real issues. Hope they have cheese the next time.

Just bad luck though when you came, first time we've ever been out of cheese. I was out of cheese that day for around 12 hours from midnight to noon.

Another squeeze in Thailand is cheese. Over 50% price increase coming and the factories are holding back shipments. Milk subsidies were lifted in Thailand and milk, cheese, sour cream is going over the roof. I ordered 1,000 kilos last week to beat the price increase and didn't get one kilo on the delivery date! Have bought every kilo block at Foodland they had at a 25% higher price. Today I got 150 kilos in from my supplier so I'm good for a week. Still looking for over 2,000 pounds of cheese if i can get it at the current price.

On the upside I am not sure if they are using some kind of mechanical press or if they are buying pre-made hard shells but I like the hard shell tacos now much more than the hand made ones they had when they first opened - very crisp.

The press " tortilla maker" is at the begining of the line. If you order soft corn tortilla, you'll smell them as we make the tortilla fresh using 100% corn maza. We now double wrap the soft corn.

What also is great and we have been doing it from time to time. Wrapping the soft corn tortilla around the crispy taco with refried beans or gucamole spread on the feshly made soft corn tortilla. If you see me, ask about it as I'm still training the staff on making it. We've been doing it on a trial basis and the comments have been great.

    www.sunrisetacos.com

  18. All this talk about burgers and Mexican made me hungry... LOL... so off to Sunrise I went.

Carne Asada (Steak) burrito, sour cream, cheese, tomato (mild salsa), chopped onions - unfortunately they were out of lettuce (strange, not something one runs out of easily). Told them to hold the beans and the rice, and decided to splurge on the guacamole.

The guacamole was decent, but probably not something I will pay 89 baht for very often. Having said that though, when the burrito came, and I stuck the salsa and guacamole in, it was nothing short of huge - and I ordered the normal size.

The carne asada was also a bit on the chewy side but not bad at all. And this time they heated the burrito, where in the past they hadn't. Much preferred it heated.

Anyhow, that was one hel_l of a burrito - excellent value for money if you don't count the guacamole.

Glad you liked it. Big problem with the lettuce crop up north and I'm the one that has been begging and stealing lettuce.

The price three weeks ago was 36 Baht a kilo. Price last week was 120 baht if you could even get it, everyone at the Market was sold out. I had to borrow 25 kilos a couple times from another restaurant who had a contract with a supplier. Think I've done a good job as we were only out of lettuce a 1/2 day thru this crisis. Lettuce today was 70 Baht while most places at the Fresh Market were 100 baht a kilo as they are shipping it in from China. I'll pay any price to have it but one day last week, there was one to be found anywhere even at 120 baht a kilo.

    www.sunrisetacos.com

  19. I'd like to see a new branch in Khao San, Silom, or in the MBK/Paragon area. With even one location in those places I'd eat at Sunrise a lot more often as I'm rarely willing to travel to Suhkumvit just to buy some tacos. :o

Will be at Siam Paragon Oct 5-8th for the American event. Still suppose to open there on the ground floor when they switch from "foodloft" concept with a separate restaurant.

As for other expansion. Khao San Rd is next in line.

Good news if you are coming to Suk 12 you'll see construction going on across the parking lot. Thats me as I'm expanding the orginal Sunrise Tacos. It will be a separate sit down restaurant with 100 sq.m.

I'll keep both locations. one for express take out and the other for those that want to sit and relax.

    www.sunrisetacos.com

  20. It's another "restaurant" in the Emporium Food Hall, diagonally across from Sunrise Tacos, and between Nippon Kai and Whittard of Chelsea.

It appears to me that this is a spinoff of what was O'Brian's near Nana.

Oh now I know. One of my wives friends is doing this. Will let him know.

    www.sunrisetacos.com

  21. Actually, I've eaten at the Emporium branch a few times.

The steak is decent, though sometimes chewy. The seasoned ground beef was also pretty decent. But didn't care for the barbacoa beef or the pork ones.

Portions are plenty big - that's good. However, I don't like the rice (not my kind of taste) nor the beans (just don't care for beans).

Instead, what I want in my burrito is meat, meat, meat... some fresh lettuce and diced tomatoes, bit of salsa, lots of sour cream and cheese. Thought it was strange that you could only have one or the other without having to pay extra.

Guacamole? I love guacamole - but I wasn't about to spend 80 baht to find out how much I would get... would've slathered that into my burrito as well, or just been happy with chips.

Bad points: less now that they've had time to adjust - but the most galling of all came the other day when I went into the Food Hall at 9:10 pm - 20 minutes before closing - and the entire kitchen was clean and the food trays packed away - needless to say if the Food Hall is open until 9:30, then I expect you to be open until 9:30.

While I'm here - I think Greg also owns The Burger (which replaced Isshin) - and if this is the case, please, PLEASE, don't marinate your burgers, the Double Stack qualifies as one of the worst burgers I have ever eaten in Thailand. What's wrong with American style - fresh ground beef, no additives? And what's with the oval shaped burgers? Fries were decent, happy you use Heinz ketchup - but the best part was - get this - the bun! That, you got exactly right...

No I don't own the Burger.

Thanks for telling me they had packed up by 9:10 p.m. This upsets me as they are on the time clock till 11 p.m.!

Guacamole: We sell use more avocados than all other restaurants according to our supplier. Its good stuff with no shortcuts. Even though avocados are expensive as we import from Australia, we increased the portion around three months ago and everyone is happy. Try it next time or come to the Suk 12 location, its cheaper there. :-)

Cheese or Sour Cream option: we give the option same as Chipotles in the USA By the way, cheese and sour cream cost more in Thailand than in the USA and about to go up 50% next week from the supplier. Other vendors have already increased the already high wholesale price this week.

    www.sunbeltasiagroup.com

  22. Of course, we know. The problem is : what don't you give your opinion ? You're in the front line of visas situation if I may say since many years...

I don't think this has come out about to have less foreigners in Thailand but to get it "right."

By bringing this mistake up with what the Immigration Act allows, many more foreigners will be able to stay in Thailand as they are a father with a Thai child than foreign dependents of a foreigner. Of course I understand they can make the criteria 65,000 Baht + per month of Thai income with the requirement of showing a work permit. Not to many foreign fathers will qualify. It will be interesting to see if it will be money in the bank, foreign or local income or Thai income only for the criteria.

  23. Just curious, what bar or restaurant do you own in that area?

My wife and/or I own only restaurants. Five of the 18 restaurants are open 24 hours on Sukhumvit Rd and one is open 24 hours on Khao San Rd.
