  1. I plan to transfer 30,000 USD to my thai baht account at Bangkok Bank.

Are the currency controls still in effect? I read about one year ago that the Bank of Thailand was trying to stop baht speculators by requiring that all foreign remittances above a certain amount be placed in some type of limited access account. I remember the amount to be around 20,000 USD.

Are these controls still in effect?

    Thanks

    No.

Thanks. I thought the controls had been lifted. Better to be safe than sorry.

  3. Today, I had my teeth cleaned. The whole process took about 15 to 20 minutes. I try to keep my teeth clean and brush twice a day with an electric toothbrush.

The cost of the cleaning was 1200 Baht plus 150 Baht hospital fee.

    The cleaning was excellent.

    Is this a reasonable fee?

One price for all dental cleanings seems unfair. I have a friend whose cleanings usually exceeds an hour because he does not brush properly and generally has bad teeth and he is a big baby.

I like the dentist at the hospital and I am wary of the sanitation at the smaller dental clinics.

  4. Has the breakfast special (100 :o. Very tasty.

Menu has a nice selection of sandwiches and main courses all reasonably priced.

Excellent place for the munchies near Walking Street.

Has small A/C area in back of restaurant.

    A big thumbs up.

  5. Just for the record, a couple of years ago I ate at the Pattaya Sizzler regularly.

Then the food was much better and the salad bar was good and had a good variety. I liked the BLT salad. They used big pieces of thick crispy bacon with tomato in a mayo sauce.

Then there was chicken not just broth in the chicken soup.

  6. ouch! 330 baht is getting near the danger zone. but compared to other nearby places, if you're a glutten, you cant beat Sizler. like in that "wave" on the roof, 330 baht will get you a small plate of something with rice and a bevargeg; and if you go to Au bon pan, 330 will get you a small sandwich and a small salad and maybe a beverage. so in terms of shear volume, Sizzelr comes out ahead.

the baked potato sounds horrible. you could always go to Villa market and make everything yourself but that will probably cost you 1000 bart. so bad chicken at Sizzler is starting to seem like the best value in town. i say "go for it".

The combos start at 330 to go to 520 (I think).

    OVERPRICED AND BAD FOOD

  7. I dined at the Sizzler at Royal Garden.

The last time I visited was about 10 months ago.

I had a chicken and pork combo. The chicken was awful. The pork was OK. I put some A1 sauce on and forced down 3 bites.

The baked potato was rotten inside and over cooked.

The salad bar selection was very limited and consisted only of the cheapest goods.

The price has gone up from 260 to 330 baht.

All in all, a bad experience either from a price or quality viewpoint.

However, the restaurant was full. No accounting for taste.

I think you are refering to a Re-Entry Permit which as you say will be valid until your

    extension expires.

The permit is not for use when you leave - but is your Permit to return

and it is the Permit's reference number that you quote on your arrival card.

    Bill

So if I renew in Sept. and get a reentry permit, how long is the reentry permit valid? Is it valid until Nov 15 2008 0r 2009?

  9. Maybe instead of opening gogos, the new business opportunity is nursing homes.

It is a very profitable industry in many parts of the world. Gogos are problematic with the grey areas of the law, old folk villages with special areas for travellers could be a very good earner for someone with the correct contacts and knowledge.

The biggest cost in nursing homes is labor. Thai labor costs are fairly low.

I think a Swedish firm has a retirement village in Jomtien.

It sounds like a winning investment.

  10. I wonder what it would be like growing "old" in Pattaya.

"Old" is the stage of life where assistance is needed. I think most people reach this stage between 75 and 85.

Most people may be forced to return to their countries due to medical costs not be covered in foreign countries.

I don't think I would like to be navigating Pattaya's streets in a walker.

The only plus would be the ability to hire someone to help you for 10 to 20K B per month.

Maybe instead of opening gogos, the new business opportunity is nursing homes.

  11. I am planning an airline trip in Sept. or Oct.

I am worried about buying a ticket from an agent. Is it possible for the agent to issue a ticket and not pay the airline? My fear is to be at the airline check in counter and discover I have an invalid ticket.

Any current recommendations for well established reputable travel agents in Pattaya?

    Thanks.

  12. I was shopping at the Royal Garden and decided to get a slice of pizza.

I noticed the price climbed from 50 B to 60 B. Food inflation????????

When I paid my bill at the counter, they charged me 66B.

I noted on the ticket a 10% service charge. I did not get any service. I carried my pizza slice myself.

The charge must have been instituted in a past six months. At the entrance, I saw no warning of the service charge.

    I will never go back.

  13. The construction noise (in and out of VT) will be unbearable for the next 5 years. All VT units are unfinished. Construction will be going on forever.

The vacant land to the south will be a high rise. Who knows when construction will begin.

The vacant land is front is too small for a high rise probably just a 5 or 6 level parking garage or shopping mall.
