I clearly remember the days when businesses that handled large amounts of cash were forced at gunpoint to open their safes. Gas stations and 24 hour convenience stores were robbed multiple times a year. That doesn’t happen anymore due to the absence of cash.

It is called compensation or an out-of-court settlement. It is not illegal and is a common practice to avoid cases going to court. You don’t ‘bribe’ a victim; bribes are given to officials to make them turn a blind eye.

This is why most service staff take a photo of your phone showing the payment confirmation. It's likely not a requirement from the owner, but it serves as evidence in case the owner claims the payment was not received. Or, it might have been a requirement, which is why the waitress was held accountable. There was no picture because the guest pretended to be busy talking on the phone while walking out. A young waitress is most likely not going to physically stop a customer from leaving.

The bank staff then call Customer Support in Bangkok, and after a 45-minute wait, they hand me their phone with a big smile, saying, "Speak Englit." You get the idea.

It's quite amusing how whenever corrupt politicians are caught in the act, with clear evidence of their wrongdoing, they quickly begin to cry out that the accusations and/or legal actions against them are driven by political motives. Unfortunately it often works.

My assumption was made because I personally know five other foreigners who have faced the same issue as me, where their additional KYC requests were rejected. Interestingly, my Thai wife and her daughter have not yet been asked to provide any additional KYC information. I asked my wife to inquire among her Thai friends, and none of them have been contacted by Bitkub. Based on this, I speculated that the authorities may be making it, for whatever reason, difficult for Bitkub to serve non-Thais, similar to what happened recently with PayPal. So nothing to do with Thais-do-not-want-us-here. Surely it is a matter of new rules and regulations imposed by financial authorities that requires Bitkub to jump through some additional hoops. Bitkub is probably not happy with that, as it will cost them customers and turnover.

Dutch newspaper interviewed the woman. She spent 5 days in a holding cell and then they let her go without - thanks to the Dutch embassy - giving her a yellow card. She talks about someone she was travelling with. Most likely the guy in today's article. According to her they crossed the land border coming from Malaysia and didn't realize they hadn't received a visa exempt stamp. Photo's, showing the exact same immigration officers line up, looks like they were taken minutes apart. Puzzling why this is presented in the media as two separate cases days apart? She is 28 years old, and the man in question appears to be around the same age, rather than 61.

Perhaps a worried citizen of Thailand attempted to increase tourism by selling a counterfeit stamp or visa to the guy. This citizen assured him that the stamp was genuine enough and that no one would detect it as a fake.
