Thats a great video transam, I have never seen that before but Arnie says it all. Have a goal and focus, mine is my holidays on the beach, that vision gets to me the gym when I dont want to. The oldest excuse in the book `I dont have the time` often said whilst sitting in the sofa munching a pack of Doritos  and watching the X Factor :sleepy:

Yes that’s nice, if you haven’t seen Pumping Iron from 1977, then check it out, Arnies Mr Universe and Olympia days, it includes the other greats from that era including the original Hulk actor Lou Ferrino (spelling..?) who was also a competitor

Yes makes perfect sense. So by month 8 or under those assumptions I should have a reduced overall weight but gained muscle mass. Is that correct?

You’ll probably have a higher overall weight but no fat, if you’ve been training hard, muscle is heavy, forget about scales, mirrors talk

Don't worry. I'll let common sense guide me. Let people express themselves. There is no absolute truth in the earth.

BTW I did download the Stronglift 5x5 app and read quite a lot yesterday about Stronglift exercices and whatnot. I paid the in-app extra as well as I got hooked up with it. I started this morning the 5x5 in the last sessions I had with my PT. I really liked the exercises. They reminded me of good old times but I think there is an issue with this type of workout. I don't believe they are totally suitable for beginners who are training alone. You definitely need to have a spotter with free weight experience or a PT. The reason is one needs to have proper forms and those exercises are not really easy to master at the beginning even with little weight. Specially squat and barbel row. Since one needs to increase weight at each session you can very quickly start making serious form mistakes.

The only way to master them is to keep doing them.

Dont start adding weight until you have mastered them.

Squat for example, just use the barbell without weights, should be 20kg if it’s an Olympic barbell.

Find a real gym with squat cage, then you don’t need a spotter, look on stronglifts at what he used if your not sure what I mean. Better still just buy one and workout at home, that’s what I did, no problems then when you arrive at a gym and it’s busy, plus can workout whenever you want, mine came from Bangkok .

I had the same concerns when I started but I kept going and kept reading and very quickly got the hang of it, if you have a pain, for example knee pain after squatting, look on stronglifts as to how your form is off and adjust it.

Anyone can make bold statements, the difficult part is to come up with facts to support such statements!

    Just look at Trump!

So, about protein intake, please elaborate...for example, how much chicken meat should one eat in order to get 30 gr of proteins? Is it better to eat chicken or turkey for this purpose?

    I am all for learning..

    Trump....?   I rest my case

Not sure but many powders are just the protein taken out of milk...Still has calories....Perhaps just drink skimmed milk does the job....I like Tuna myself..:stoner:...

Again, great advice, you don’t need shakes,  most are just marketing crap, some are great but still no substitute for Real food. Shakes are only really useful when your short on time to prepare food, even then just make it yourself, blend fresh milk, 4 egg whites and whatever fruit you fancy, add some yogurt if you like, nuts m, seeds etc. Job done.  Spinach works particularly well as it leaves no taste and is very nutritious

It is not easy to lose fat while gaining muscle...

For the proteins, it is very difficult to have a meal that will give you the same quantity of proteins as in a shake made of concentrated proteins.

    Again, absolute <deleted>

For the diet, yes I am aware of what it means. But eating healthy is a wide concept. One needs to know exactly what eating healthy implies and also what is suitable for muscle volume increase.

Everything you need to know is on Stronglifts website, there is a lot of info which is why I originally said to keep reading it, any spare minute have a look.

I don't know how many years of bodybuilding and weightlifting you have behind you, but I have never seen anyone showing meaningful results after just only one month!

Real athletes do not quit over frustration after one month!

What about martial arts for example...you think that a beginner has something to show after one month?

That would rather be after at least a few years.

And the same goes for many things, like learning to play an instrument, for example...it takes more than a month to show results...

It’ll take more than 1 month to decifer what the <deleted> you are talking about

What I would hate most is lose weight and also lose muscle mass.

Then you must eat healthy to Lose fat, but eat MORE to gain muscle, I know it seems to contradict itself but not really, food is the building blocks and you are building your body. Also workout good, when it’s time to train, you focus and train.

By the way the 5x5 I recommend is because I’ve spent 20 years pissing about in gyms with endless dumbell curls etc and with no real effect, then I found stronglifts and in 3 months I’ve achieved more than in those 20 odd years, try it and if you don’t see a big improvement in 6 weeks, move on, but I think you’ll stay....

Rule of thumb is not about weight you can move but about weight you can move with FULL range of motion for the desired number of reps...Fluffing around with weights you are struggling with without full range of motion does sod all....

I enjoyed watching and listening too Damien Patrick's youtube vids...

Exactly, doing 5 reps perfectly will be far more beneficial than 10 incorrectly and specifically with a half range of motion because your trying to lift to heavy, this will only lead to an injury

Is that the 'StrongLifts 5x5 Workout Log' I see in the app store?

Thanks for all the great advice.

Search stronglifts 5x5, only 1 I think. You can download for free and use it, I think it’s a lot better when you upgrade for a small fee.

You don’t Need to lift heavy, it’s up to you, but you say you want to get strong and cut, this will make you STRONG but you won’t be walking around looking like a meathead with massive upper body and tiny legs, Squats work your whole body so everything will be in proportion, if you’ve only time for 1 exercise then squat.

Diet is to get cut, but don’t misinterpret the word diet, people think it means to stop eating, no, it means to eat healthy, when you start training you actually need to eat more, don’t worry, the fat will go bit by bit.

And don’t listen to Brunolem, he’s no idea what he’s talking about

Don't think us older guys should get involved with squats and dead lifts if using or aiming for using heavy weights..

You can Squat and deadlift at any age, doesn’t have to be heavy,  not sure what you mean us older guys,  OP doesn’t say his age but I’m 44 and after 3 months I’m squatting 107.5kg, bench 92.5 and deadlift 130.  If your in your 60,s and up then of course just light weights

  13. Use:  stronglifts 5x5. Pay the small amount for the app. Read everything inside it thoroughly and continue reading  over and over whenever you have a spare 5 minutes to remember it.

This program focuses on Squats, they don’t call it the King of exercises for nothing, 3 sessions a week, includes deadlift, bench press, a couple of others.

Dont deviate from the program or train on off days, these days are needed for recovery.

If you’ve never squatted before then start with 20kg, at 3 months you’ll be squatting 100kg, that’s heavy. If you follow the program seriously then from 20kg to 80kg will be comfortable, 80kg to 100kg is tough, over 100kg needs complete discipline and diet.

Initially don’t worry about protein intake, just eat healthy every meal and try to include protein rich foods in every meal, eggs, steak, fish, nuts etc etc, plenty of veg and leafy greens.  There is a saying in the fitness world, Abs are made in the kitchen, it’s true.

And when people start to criticise that Squats and Deadlifts damage your back? Don’t listen, if you hurt yourself it’s because  you are doing the exercise wrong, these types of exercise are not easy to master, but when you do, the gains are incredible.

Thai children are subjected to punishingly long hours which have a counterproductive effect on their ability to learn and make going to school a pain rather than a pleasure.

They actually leave school dumber - or at least with a lower IQ - than when they started and are among the worst achievers in south-east Asia.

Finland has proved, among other educational leaders, that it is the quality of teaching, not time spent in the classroom that really makes the difference - particularly when the classroom is baking hot, stuffy, ill-equipped and rote learning is the order of the day.

My bright and imaginative ten-year-old daughter was close to tears at being forced to return to her junior school after the half term hols and I cannot say I blame her.

She learns more in a few weeks of part time study at home than she does in months under the state system. If I had the time and ability I would home-school her rather than watch her creativity being crushed out of her in the educational sausage machine.

Kids who prosper here do so DESPITE the system, not because of it.

So send her to an International school, it’s not that expensive

And as long as you don't need to do any business at the Jomtien immigration office during your stay (e.g., requesting a 30d extension on a tourist visa), you probably won't have a problem.  But touch all the wood you want, if you rent a condo in the area served by the Jomtien Immigration Office, and the landlord there doesn't do the TM30 (and many of them DON'T want to do it and will claim they know nothing about it!), and you yourself fail to do it within 24hrs of arrival at the condo, you'll be on the wrong side of the law.  Show up at the Jomtien office to request something, and you can be fined.

Yep, didn’t bother getting mine and when I went for an extension at Chiangmai immigration the fine was 1700b ish, don’t remember the exact amount but under 2000 anyway.  Not too bad but it’s free if you do it within 24 hours of arrival.

The honorary consulates cannot issue a multiple entry non-o visa now. The embassy in London still issues them with no financial proof being needed.

The consulate in Savannakhet does issue them without financial proof being needed. A few reports of the consulate in Ho Chi Minh City issuing them as well.

Slightly off topic but the OP is also British with Thai children like me so could be beneficial,  my children currently have dual passports, about 2 years ago thai immigration told  me that when they reach age 18 they will need to choose one, not possible for dual citizenship   Giving up a British passport is difficult I think but if they are living in Thailand then life on a British passport would not be easy....

Do you know if this is true?

It is possible to get a multiple entry Non Imm O visa on the basis of marriage, without financial proof, in Savannakhet or Ho Chi Minh City. This will require you to make border runs every 90 days

How sure are you this is correct?  I was originally using this exact visa obtained in UK honorary consulate and i needed to show 3 months bank statements with minimum amounts. This year they said that the 1 year multiple entry version of this visa is no longer available, only the 90 day and would then need to convert to something else in Thailand.

I ask because this would be a good option for me also, especially if no financials are needed. Thanks.
