What does that have to do with this topic ?

This thread is about Thailand , nothing to do with USA

I was only responding to the person before me talking about the USA.  I don't know why he brought it up.  I just quoted him and then gave a different experience.   Ask him why he brought the USA into the discussion.

from what I have read the antibody tests have a 15-50% false positive rate so they are virtually worthless.

some cities near me ran a 1 day testing location.  2000 baht.  no fred testing in USA as far as I know.  I had a friend who had a surgical procedure 3 weeks ago.  negarive covid test on a Monday required before Wednesday surgery.   his insurance statement said the test bill alone  was 1900$ USD. about 62,000 baht.  This world is f'd up.

I should add that 3 times in the last week we broke state records for new highest number of new cases.  just 1 week as go never over 240 in 1 day.   restaurants allowed to open May 15th amd restrictions lifted on  some gatherings, then in last 7 days case # popped, a 345 day, 400+, and 500+ yesterday and people still not wearing masks and in denial.

    USA is screwed

Just so you know, almost ever county in the US has free covid testing.  Here is an article from a local paper.

    https://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/20200513/coronavirus-florida-wellington-test-site-up-and-running-provides-free-covid-19-tests

If you have insurance which more than 90 percent of Americans do then it is probably free at the local clinic or doctor's office.

Everyone I know who wants a test in the states has gotten them and no one I know of was charged $1,900.

Actually 3 backward countries do not use the metric system: Liberia in Africa, the US of America, and our good neighbor Burma.

The metric system is used in most scientific applications in the US.  Also a metric equivalent is on most food items in the grocery stores.

Having watched Netflix series filmed in Canada there is still a lot of reference to imperial measurements there.  I have been to New Zealand and many still speak using miles to describe distance.

In the UK people still talk of height in terms of feet and inches, distance in miles, volume in gallons, pints and half pints. Weight in terms of stones (talk about archaic).

Thailand uses rai for land measurements and a different calendar.

Every country seems to have something archaic about it.

My guess is this came from a press release from Nike.  It would be normal for a US company to release information to shareholders this way.

It would be for the WHO, all of Europe and the US.

To be fair there is at least one peace of information missing.  What kind of masks and what was there rating, (n95, n99, no rating just fabric)?  The US never said wearing an N99 mask wouldn't prevent the spread of the virus.   They said don't use them because they were needed by healthcare workers.

  5. Since all we are doing is speculating at the moment there are different ways to look at it.

Waiting to plan and book a trip till it is all over is a safe way to do it but preplanning a trip let's countries and airlines gauge interest.   As long as a person has the ability to loose the deposit and wants to take the risk where is the harm.

You can look at four months as a long or short time dependent on you perspective. There is news from San Diego today of an antibody treatment that might be available soon.

    https://www.foxnews.com/science/covid-cure-california-biopharmaceutical-coronavirus-antibody-breakthrough

There is word from the WHO that a vaccine may never come.  We may just have to live with the danger.  No one knows.

As for "filthy Americans," I just laugh.  I know plenty of Canadians that feel the same way as those filthy Americans. How much support does Trudeau have in the middle of his country?

I am seeing people hungry here in Indonesia every day because of the lockdown.   I know people in the Philippines starving and can't afford medicine.   Thailand is fairing better, at least by government numbers, with the virus.  That is great, really, but if you don't use that news to open the economy what good is it.  People (most) need to work to buy essentials.

Is it not time to have Thailand open internally as much as possible?  And international travel will take some more time but plan it, talk about it, come up with the ideas that make it work.

If you think that shuttering 15 percent of a country's economy for more than six more months is a price worth paying given the current circumstances, I disagree.

  6. That is kind of true but 90 percent of Americans have health insurance and it wouldn't be true for most of them.  I know at least two people that could get health insurance from their employers and they have chosen not to because they would rather take the gamble.

Also there is Medicare for the poor. This sucks but it is a form of health coverage for the disadvantaged.

There is Medicare for the old.  I have good private insurance but medicare becomes the primary insurer when I turn 65.  Again kind of a universal system.  Most people are happy with medicare by the way.

And if you need emergency treatment hospitals are required to treat you even without insurance.  This is totally inefficient but people aren't just dying in the streets.

I have been to doctors in a number of countries with single payer systems.  Good for many things but I get better treatment and have more say over who I see and when with my insurance.

The American system is different and in many ways not as good but it is also better in many ways.

But there is no denying you pay for it dearly.

I don't seem able to quote the comment about it being cheaper for Americans to take a health care vacation from above.

  7. Like so many things it depends on the office.  My immigration office (Phetchabun) renews the 90 day when you do the extension.   But I always think it is funny because the officer makes a big deal that he is doing for me. Even when I told him I would be leaving the country weeks before I needed to do another 90 day report.  It didn't matter to him he did it anyway and put the slip of paper in my passport.

I would rather them be overly helpful than not helpful enough so that is one good thing about the Phetchabun office.  I shouldn't say it that way.  Phetchabun is a great office but almost no English is spoken by the staff.   Almost everyone that uses the office has a Thai wife that does all the talking.  Everytime I go in I am always asked the same question. Where is your wife? in Thai of course.  I say mai mee mia and they look at me like why on earth are you in Phetchabun?  Always get a laugh out of the look on their faces.

  8. I hear things like we must wait for the vaccine.  When the vaccine is available.  When everyone has had the vaccine.

    Because,

We don't know if we will have heard immunity before that.  People may not have enough antibodies to protect from getting the virus again.

But we need to also remember that it is not when we have a vaccine, it is if they develop an effective vaccine. There is no guarantee of a vaccine either.

I personally think they will but we will have to wait for that also.

  9. If this article is right and the virus is her to stay or here for years, and I definitely could be, then it is time to lift all the restrictions.  Getting people back to work and collecting the taxes will be the only way to provide health care.  No way the economy can stop for years and not have massive starvation and health issues.

  10. After reading three of the 7 pages of comments I am posting so if there are others in the next pages that said this I am sorry.

I am in Indonesia right now waiting for Thailand to allow one year extension holders back in (Yes a long time probably).  So I have more expenses since I am not at my condo.  Maybe 20,000 baht extra.

But then there is the 50,000 or so baht I have given to families in April in Thailand, Indonesia and The Philippines.

I know so many that have no food or no money to enroll kids in school that my expenses are way up.

I am still waiting on the $1,200 from the US which I am sure will help more families eat.

I truly believe that money you earn is your to do with as you want.  As for me any windfall I am getting is going to help people not to starve.

    Sorry for being preachy.

  11. Just FYI, a couple of studies have shown that covid can travel 4 meters in the air.

    https://www.tweaktown.com/news/71757/scientists-pinpoint-how-far-coronavirus-covid-19-can-travel-in-the-air/index.html

So I guess if someone is walking on the pavement without a mask on all the cars and motorcycles need to uturn.

Yes I know the study was indoors.  It is hyperbole.

  12. The US has handled this situation poorly but if you look at the numbers per capita it isn't really worse than a lot of places.  Certainly not worse than Europe.

    https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/daily-covid-deaths-3-day-average

    https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/full-list-total-tests-for-covid-19

It will get worse though.  I am not sure if all this country vs country is all that productive.  We are all lying in the beds that we have made.

The lockdown and most social distancing measures in Thailand could easily be here for the whole of 2020- that's realistic thinking based on quarter of a million expected deaths in the US over the next 2 weeks in a best case scenario. Anyone hoping bars, shops etc will be allowed to open before July in Thailand will be disappointed.

Just wondering where is the data for 250,000 deaths in the US in the next two weeks coming from?

And a best case senerio to boot.
