  1. Seems to be a bit of confusion about the REASON for the 90 day reporting.

It is not to confirm that you are still in the country. It is so that immigration know WHERE you are staying in the country.

Therefore, your arrival IN the country with the TM card counts as the FIRST reporting of address, and it is from that date that the 90 days start. No connection to when you last reported at all.

    Hope this clarifies a bit.

  2. absolute rubbish .The article is coming down on Thailand because Taskin and his policies is a great example of why businessmen should not become politicians.Of course they will use their power for themselves who wouldnt afterall business is all about getting an edge. But with no real competion and choice how can intelligence which you rightly pointed out that Thais have ever be rewarded and encouraged.Simply it cant and you end up with a kind of capatilist / comunist soceity.

Just imagine have proved yourself a brilliant student only to find you can work for one man paying crap wages. What do you do ?

Also you knock the western media and then later go on to praise it. Where did the internet come from? Is it not a western media/commuication creation. Will it not be that the willingness of mainly western students to share their ideas and knowledge through western media be the reason why these Thai medical students are showing such promise.

Absolutely correct Parry. The Economic Review has no axe to grind, so there is no reason to denigrate its findings at all. They have it right, and it is a sign of the times that the Thai press are unable, out of fear of reprisals, to report in an impartial way. Certainly, I am sure they would agree with most of what the Review says given the chance, however painful it would be to admit to.

  3. Why don't you go to the mobsters, and lay down the law to them.

Tell them you're going to the local gendarmerie and you require them all to stay put until the Black Maria arrives to take them all off to clink.

Or you could try blackmailing them. Tell them that you'll squeal unless they give you all the money on the premises. To accomplish this its best to have a dummy weapon, like a banana coated in black boot polish to resemble a revolver.

    errr..............and you are from.......what planet??

  4. Well, was going to wait until I could do a full report before replying to this, but davidm's bullshit is too much to resist.

'His first 4 points are just that...bullshit.

    1. Crime. Of course there is crime, the same as anywhere on the planet now. Tried walking down a London or New York or many Bangkok streets at night?? It seems to be no different here. Use your common sense and keep away from places you shouldnt be.

    2. Corruption. Yeh right. So there isn't any corruption in Thailand. It is ingrained in ALL Asian countries from the bottom to the top - Thailand one of the worst!

    3. The Police. So you can be assured of getting a fair deal as a foreigner in Thailand against a local in a dispute? Get Real!!

    4. So it's really easy to get a job in Thailand is it? Have you EVER even been there? Makes me wonder!

Points 5 and 6. Totally subjective. Have you ever measured the pollution in Bangkok and Manilla? Likewise the traffic problems.

Points 7 and 8 really show how little you know about the respective countries.

Economic instability? I wonder where the 1997 Asian crisis actually STARTED!!

Coups insurrection and instability? Very very short memory!

It's certainly not perfect. There are other downsides to both countries which you havn't mentioned, but on balance, my experience so far is very positive, and the people are certainly more welcoming if nothing else.

  5. I don't mind SunbeltAsia promoting its business, I do mind SunbeltAsia changing to the Thai way of doing business by lying and telling untruths to consumers.

Absolutely right. This board should be for information, and not propoganda! Sponsor or not, keep to the facts please!

As for me, well, I have already taken the plunge, and am in a new country. It is early days, but the signs in my opinion are not good in Thailand, and I can see it getting worse there. In my time, the arrogance of the people has increased in proportion to the arrogance of its leader, which is saying something!

To all the people who usually answer a topic on this subject by "if you don't like it...LEAVE"...well I have, and so far, it is better for me. It's not a question of is it better than UK or Usa or Aus, or NZ it's a question of a better place to live the lifestyle that I want, in a place that is perhaps more welcoming than Thailand has become.

I will give it more time here to find out if it really is the place for me, and will maybe do a report for anyone interested in an alternative to the overly nationalistic Thailand that we now see.

  6. Leaving out all the insults....which is a wate of time, and pointless, there are two sides to this.

First is that we do not pay anything for the use of this board and the info that we gather from it. It is provided free of charge, and many of us would be a lot worse off without access to that information. It is for George and George alone to say who is Admin and the rules under which they operate.

Secondly:- On the other hand, there would be no Board OR Admin without the members here and the contributions that they make, and it is a fine balance to achieve fair play and a little tolerance is needed on all sides.

Although I have had several disagreements with Dr PP myself, we have managed to keep it on a civilised basis, but I do also realise how frustrating it can be for Admin to have the final say, even if we think they are wrong.

The answer seems to be that this board would be a lot worse off without the considerable expertise of the Admin here, and if you dont like what they post, DON'T resort to personal attacks....just DON'T READ IT!

  7. I missed this poisoned drop of prejudice the first time around. If you have a problem living here, you know what you can do!

mrentoul.....can you never think of anything else to say???....

    Change the record will you!!

  8. Seriously though, it is quite funny to think that 200 people have actually paid out for it already. I'd still love to know..............WHY?......... Makes you wonder about those Nigeria scams, and how many people have fallen for them also. Maybe........err..........200?.......... :o

  9. Then why not indicate a fair balance. You did not

Dr P.P. We have had this argument several times I know, but it does work BOTH ways.

If you consider the balance of the replies to NamKaos slightly insensitive conversation with the Thai girl, it is only right for Parryhandy to give an alternative view also. The others did not in general give ANY negative view so why should Parryhandy emphasise a positive?

Incidentally, my Thai wife always is extremely suspicious in any business dealings with a Thai. She herself says they just can not be trusted. Out of the horses mouth?

No, they are not all like that, but to have that view expressed by a Thai must be an indication that there is some substance to it.

Once again, you MUST respect the view of other people here, even if it does not agree with your own. It is very misleading to encourage a rose tinted outlook on all things Thai. There is good and bad here, but I have NEVER seen the slightest negative posting from you. You know the situation here as well if not better than I. If you don't want to tell it as it is.............let others at least have their say without the inference that they are wrong.

    Regards

  10. Absolutely amazed that the British Embassy did any thing to help at all. They are not known to be the most ex-pat friendly of Embassies.

However 2 Ecstacy tabs or 200, can't believe people are still doing it here. Do you have a death wish?? After all the warnings and all the publicity. Quite honestly, THiS is just what law-abiding farangs do not need at the moment. Just makes life harder than it already is. No sympathy here.

  11. Have to admit the figure of 2000 farangs resident in Udon Thani is much higher than I would have estimated myself.

Even now at the height of the season I would very much doubt that number are here including the tourists. The number of familiar faces that you see in the street, ex-pat bars, and shopping mall do not really bear this sort of figure out.

Difficult to quantify the number who live out in the boonies, but would be surprised if the total number of RESIDENT farangs is more than half the quoted figure.

    Could be wrong though.
