  1. Being a Type 1 diabetic and having a longer stint here than expected, I was running out of insulin and was trying to find somewhere easily accessible by foot in Jomtien. I just wanted to note this, as I had looked on here previously for info on Insulins and Pharmacies, but didn't find too much that was helpful, hence this post.

I did try Fascino after seeing that mentioned on here, but they had a wait on one of the insulins and I would have had to go in twice, once to prepay and then to pickup. Credit cards or bank transfer was not an option. Plus it was a good hike from where I am.

I tried a few others, by phone or internet without any luck. Most of the time, I got no response, till I tried PloyFany pharmacy on Jomtien Beach, who replied right away on Messenger. The pharmacist Ploy was extremely accommodating and patient. Excellent English, and I was eventually able to order my insulins and other supplies. I could also have prepaid a deposit with a bank transfer to save me going along, but as it was reasonably close and on the beach, I did walk along.

Price wasn't a factor in my decision in any way, but as it happened, she was cheaper than Fascino too.

My insulins were Lantus and Humalog and she also had N95 masks and gels.

Best experience I've had at any pharmacy in any country.

Given that there are about a 100 infected persons on the loose (rough number based on about 5 new confirmed cases/day x 14 day incubation period) currently in this country of 60million+ your chances of catching C-19 are effectively zero. Unless, of course, you are out and about on the BTS, in malls and such for hours a day. If that is not the case you should not worry and stress yourself for no good reason.

No-one knows how many cases are out and about. So please do not try to pick numbers out of the air that cannot be substantiated without enormous tests, either from infections or antibodies. Neither of which are being done here.

I can say that as a qualified mathematical scientist, who follows that with a passion. Are the chances dramatically lower here than Europe, USA, Brazil or Mexico? You bet your sweet life they are, but please do throw your personal or anyone else's GUSSES out there as facts. I for one am thankful for the cautious and realistic attitude of the Thai government.

Aside from my other 3 conditions which do not favour me, Type 1 diabetics monitor/sweat the small stuff every hour of each day they are awake, so I handle things, by being as best prepared as possible. I suggest that maybe you should look at this:

    https://www.sbs.com.au/news/the-feed/everything-you-think-you-know-about-type-1-diabetes-is-wrong

I asked a question about customs regulations and I am very grateful to ukrules for his response.

Regarding everything else, particularly on numbers which I research extensively every day, being told how to handle that, is not helpful, however well appreciated that may be.

Purchase a "ReliOn" finger <deleted> blood glucose monitor until you can work out your Thai customs problems...

Try not to worry too much about it.

As with any Type 1, I have a whole mass of fingersticks, which are very important ,even when you have a CGM device. I have over a 1000 test strips, but the prospect of having to set an hourly alarm during my sleep is not particularly enticing or helpful in getting a vital quality night's sleep.

Of course, I will try not to worry with the fact that not being able to monitor 24/7 greatly increases my morbidity chances, should I get this virus.

Yes, it's crazy but that's the way it is, I've read many similar complaints for all sorts of products including vitamin supplements over the years, it's always the same demand - they want some kind of FDA approval - you're not going to get it.

This system is designed to prevent you from ever importing items like this.

Your best bet would be to source them locally or just send them again and accept the loss, use a non express courier, regular post but with tracking and keep 6 months to a years worth of advance stock for times like this when a shipment goes missing.

Of course the international mail is not running right now.

I would start by contacting the manufacturer to see if they have a distributor in Thailand or Asia and follow it up from there.

Thanks for the info and that's good to know about regular post. I was considering that and with as much, as was unlikely to cause a problem.

The first thing I tried to do, was to source them locally, but this company has no Thai office and are unobtainable locally, so overseas is the only option.

It is utter madness that for something like this, that is available all over the world and critical for Type 1s. Especially with yesterday's news that we are 4 times more likely to die from this and blood sugar control being critical 24/7.

Appreciate the quick response and detail.

  5. I use Diabetic Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) system to monitor my sugar and have had to have sensors shipped to me here as I have run out. First set no problem, but the last set are stuck at customs and they are saying I need Medical Import License to get these.

This is crazy as they are no more medical than a thermometer or a blood pressure meter.

I am desperate for these, as should I get the virus, continuous monitoring of my blood sugar is critical for my survival. Type 1 Diabetics through no fault of our own are one of the most vulnerable groups from this accursed virus.

Has anyone else had such a problem with bringing CGM supplies in?

    Many Thanks,

    Will.

In the UK, they are predicting many times the COVID death count, which is padded with people who were already old and ill, in dead caused by the lockdown

Sweden is doing OK without destroying their economy. Of course, there was an instant backlash from countries where leaders have harmed the country in response to a flu.

Most people don't yet understand the long term damage the lock down will cause world wide. They can't weigh the cost of the shutdown against lives lost to the Coronaflu. Societies have become overly emotional.

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8208397/Sweden-sees-just-77-new-deaths-coronavirus.html

"Response to a flu" - what an asinine comment. Several multitudes more deadly and infectious. Covering all areas of the population, unlike flu, which typically is mainly fatal for elderly and the young.

Attitudes like that are why this will continue to be a huge problem, till successful drugs and a vaccine are available.

Economies will recover, dead people won't.

Amazing numbers.. Maybe we can all go back to work. 33 sick people and the country grinds to a halt. The medicine seems more dangerous than the disease based in these numbers. However we must consider the 32'000 people under investigation. Those who have symptoms but have not been tested (one assumes) . Hmmm??

Does anyone know if PUI are tested for Covid??

Two weeks of no new cases is the minimum ideal standard. Look at Wuhan and see how long that was the case. I think you will find that it was about that number and that of course depends on extensive testing too.

I'm one of the lucky survivors of COVID 19, was treated in Thailand with a coctail of paracetamol,  Favipiravir, hydrochloroquine, zinc and antibiotic. It obviously did the job, recovered quickly and fully. The countries which are proctrastrinating with the use of proven antiviral drugs are playing God IMHO. Stay safe eveybody, I don't wish COVID on anybody, nasty stuff.

    Congratulations on surviving.

Was just wondering if you had any idea on the cost of your hospital stay and treatment? My insurance runs out in just over 30 days and I am really worried about being able to get a renewal. If I'm unable to get that, just looking to plan on how much money might be needed to cover treatment and care.

    Many Thanks.

And how about the widely used combo of Hydroxychloroquine, Azythromycen & Zinc?

Is this being used to treat patients in Thailand?  If it is then hospital admissions, especially ICU, would be reduced

    by a large margin.

I was amazed to read that in the UK, the current Chief Medical Officer said that the only things allowed to be used in UK hospitals to treat Covid 19 patients is Paracetamol & in extreme cases, Oxygen.

I think somebody should be strung up on the nearest tree. it's no wonder their fatality rate is so high.

I had almost 3 years fighting for my mum in the uk to get decent drugs. First visit, expected fatal pneumonia as doc said, only basic amoxicillin. I had to fight so hard for the best recommended antibiotic for that, as was told it needed a lot of procedures. And that was well established best treatment as stated by the NHS.

When she was dying 2 years later from aspirational pneumonia due to progressive bulbar palsy, they took basic oxygen thro the nose away coz they needed it for somewhere else and they had few machines.

They were big on giving her paracetamol for her extreme distress.

That is only the tip of the iceberg.

So knew, there was going to be a treatment disaster in the uk.

Whether you believe the numbers or not, at least they’re consistently low. The authorities also seem to know where most of the new cases originated, which is comforting.

I wish the government would tell us, though, what their criterion is for relaxing the restrictions. Obviously, there won’t be any relaxation until Songkran is over, but it would be nice to know what they’re aiming at in the medium term. Consistently less than fifty new cases a day seems to be the most common criterion being bandied around by other countries, but the CCSA are reportedly unhappy with the latest numbers and are talking about tightening restrictions.

Really need at least 2 weeks with no new cases

  12. Still seems to be a disproportionately large percentage of foreigners or thai who travelled abroad. It's really hard to believe that there is so little internal community spread with the limited social distancing that I see ????

One can only hope that these are a true reflection. I guess how hard the crackdown continues will be more reflective. For those asking for a re-opening of bars on the basis of these, be careful what you wish for unless you're wanting a side helping of covid-19

WHO and everyone has already backtracked on that. Everyone should be wearing face masks

Yes and that's good, but the 100% enforcement in a hot climate is not so good. Once the masks get wet from sweat, their effectiveness drops dramatically. I was taking mine off in the fresh air and avoiding people by some distance, but then on again, if inside. And obviously then, I have to be really careful with my handling as I had been, but now that option has gone ????

Allow the sale of hydroxchloroquine and azithromycin in pharmacies! Hydroxychloroqune is a "OLD" and trusted anti Malaria medicine, its safe/cheap, unless your massively obese and have a heart problem. Its a prophylactic, think condom you sex crazed ex pats, ie; it protects you from catching COVID-19. USA is starting to realize this!!! France, Italy, South Korea and supposedly China are now using this stuff and it's working.

Thai Gov, let us buy it, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain! Your infected and death figures are thankfully very low. Improve on that with HydroxC.

As an epidemiologist, you clearly have no concept of proper clinical trials. Small samples with inconsistent results show no endorsement of what you are saying. Is it worth taking? If you don't have any health issues, yeah. There's nothing to lose, but don't have high expectations. You can be sure it's being used enormously in many countries, especially in the US after the President pushed it, but are you seeing a dramatic drop off in cases and deaths? Sadly, no ????

Even when they find a miracle drug, it'll be months before sufficient quantities can be produced. I'm just trying to isolate and buy time.

Yes. Happy to see no sign yet of an exponential rise, though it is where these 102 people have been in the last ten days which we don't know. Awesome if some of them were already in some sort of quarantine, , though some of course may have been moving around far and wide. The Ro number, or how many other people each infected person passes it to is what is important and which remains largely unknown here.

At 100 a day it will come for us all in only about 1,900 years.

Agreed, but we have no idea if the numbers are a true reflection of the situation. The urgency of the measures coming in suggest otherwise. I heard and saw 2 ambulances going by my apartment in Jomtien within an hour of getting up. And I generally hear at least one every day.

The social distancing here is minimal, both by Thais and Expats. When I do have to go down to pick up a package, I see people hanging out as normal, socializing. and absolutely not close to 2 meters apart with almost everyone cramming into the tiny lifts together. The view of streets from my window, with people as close together as always, really makes me worry.
