I am glad I read this Thread. I was never sure If they was cheating me on the rare occasion I have been charged 20THB past klang.Or if the other driver just forgot where I got on. But I am going to continue to pay 10THB and play dumb. And then just have a little chuckle to myself as I walk of. There is no one else I would consider cheating in Thailand only these people. Nearly all of them are dishonest in my opinion. Just watch when you give them 20THB for a 10THB fare and they slightly hesitate to see if you are expecting change. Plus I could go on for ages with all the other problems I've had with them over the years. But you've all hered the storys before

Paying the correct local fare is also great practice for newbies and tourists in a situation that's not too dangerous.

if you want to survive in a less affluent country you need to be vigilant and stand your ground on small things so you won't get ripped off on the big things.

    on a side note:

if the driver stops and nothing is posted technically the ride is free. Anything else is a negotiation when you get off.

So don't get duped into paying whatever they ask if you think it's over the going rate (does not account for steel bars, group mobbing etc).

just like a meter taxi if the meter is off you can't see the fare and it's not an above board ride. If the police show up there is no fare or evidence you knew what you had to pay.

    In fairness (or fareness)

    Jomtiem to Central 20B

    Jomtiem to Dolpin  Roundabout 30B

    Jomtiem to Naklua. 40B

Surely wouldn't be too much to ask

    Is surely is.

each time you overpay the rate increases.

    Not rocket science really.

take a look at Phuket if you want an example of what overpaying and letting it slide can do.

carry exact change and walk away. That's what I do.

  3. Sounds like you mean 10 days total? That's not enough time.

your clinging to to the rush and excitement of a change in scene and projecting those feelings onto the people and situation and saying it's all good.

The cambo smiles are more overdone then thai, but don't make the mistake of thinking everyone has hunky dory thoughts for the wealthy foreigner.

Not quite sure what that has to do with having no health facilities. Some of the hotels look very half decent I simply cannot believe that if someone rings reception with serious immediate health issue the only option is to ring the police and they might turn up.

Am going to email some hotels and get their response. Will copy and paste responses here

A more likely situation then the police would be having to pay someone to take you to the local clinic.

The money would go direct into the pocket of the drivers or be split between whatever ranking manager was present and a tuk tuk.

you may get lucky and get the ride but payment would be expected likely after you were stabilized but before they left.

its also likely the police may suggest payment for taking you, either before or after depending on your state. I don't think they would insist, depends on the situation.

an ambulance is probably not an option due to the time it would take. Tuk tuk would be your ambulance.

your really kind of on your own in Cambodia, esp traveling solo. Like I said its a last resort. Travel through, enjoy it, but think twice about settling long term unless you have been there at least six months and know the scene.

It begs the question how anyone would dare take the chance of visiting (or retiring) if they knew it advance there is simply no health facilties at all

Easy answer to that one is no money

another answer are low life's who have criminal records and want to live under radar, kiddie fiddlers, drug users (usually people who don't have much money) I could go on...

did the tour of end of the road scene in snooty and it's not somewhere most people would want to wash up in their golden years (unless you were coming from a slum somewhere in India or Africa where things are really bad).

even met a few living in shacks paying $125 a month saying how great the place is as they drink 50 cent beers. You deny as much as you need to in order to survive Your situation I suppose.

went into a to a bar run by an older British expat. He acted like he'd won the lottery when I ordered a $1 beer. Got to thinking what this guy would do if I knew him better or gave out any personal info. No thanks. Not my cup of tea.

Gary when you say pathetic level of health care how pathetic are we talking ( yes have heard of many airlifted to Bangkok etc etc) but what about care other than stroke heart attack related etc etc ??

Is there a "hospital" of any sort or decent clinic at least ??

Snooty is a trash can. Very small seedy beach strip serving the same $3 BBQ. Rest of the city is not worth visiting.

its worth visiting just so you know you don't want to retire there and the hype is bs.

  7. I think many of these schools are set up as money mills. Classes are taught by rote and everyone passes. Class time is like being in detention hall with jokes etc.

i opted to travel instead rather then spend three days a week getting up early going to a class which seemed like it would be a waste of time.

You use your time to full advantage. If your going this route get into a university class where u can at least gain something out of your time.

many of the univ have thai-eng classes where anyone can go without formal admission that satisfy the ed hourly requirement

I was replying to someone else - hey, to each his/her own - 'some people fold their toilet paper before wiping, some people just bunch it up'.  I have lived in all five corners of Thailand over a sdpan of thirty years, and at this time in my life??  I prefer Chonburi, hope you're happy wherever in NakonaNoWhere you are.   Peace

Ever use a bum gun before?

Why is it so many people who apparently have very little money keep wanting to come here? The prospect of finding good wage work is almost nil and a continued poverty-level existence cannot be their goal; or is it? I know several farangs who have been teaching English here for 20-30 years. They are in their late fifties or early sixties and none of them have any assets, pensions or chances at anything except a mediocre NES teacher's salary.  One had a minor stay in hospital and expected everyone else to pay his bills. What do they think they will do when they get old and sick? Or is that the problem, they don't think?

i think most are just above water, start thinking of ways to skim and end up over here thinking they can have a good lifestyle for less money. Airfare can be paid at that point.

once here for several years you combine wine, women and song along with no income coming in and trying to keep up with the two week millionaires passing through and you get what I refer to as skint chaps with no future.

  10. You'll have a hard time getting the real cheap stuff around 3000 if you don't speak thai.

even if you speak it many thai landlords won't rent to farang because they think the cheap units should be reserved for Thais. Also the cheaper units are always taken its hard to find available ones.

Likely you'll end up in the 5000-10000 range just because it's easier, unless you really can't pay it.

  11. Lived in Silom several months. Strange area. Mostly corporate type business buildings or hotels. Inside people who like ac.

Not much to do in Silom and gets quiet at night. Feels deserted after dark.

if you like hotel bars and buffets it's a good location.

patong is exciting of course but it's an exception for the area and not that big. Lumpini park is also a great option for day times, but gets old after a visit or two.

easy way to avoid scam bars/establishments is simply to pause and check out the place before going in. I can tell immediately by just looking at the staff or servers or guys hanging out by the door/entry. Not hard to do unless your drunk or loaded.

if the windows are smoked simply step inside and look. Not hard to do.

The vibe has to be positive without thinking about it if it he vibe is seedy or neutral it's a no. Pushy but nice is also a no.
