  1. Yes, I know, before everyone shouts at me, we do not know the exact model of the scooter! It's definitely a Honda 125 semi-auto with a sidecar attached. We"ve "borrowed" it from an elderly family member who had no papers for it. All the the usual decals are long gone and we haven't yet found the VIN number anywhere on the 'cycle. After google-dredging my top possibility is an old "Future" or possibly a Wave or Innova of well over 10 years vintage, most likely somewhere around 20.

Front lights are now all working but the rear single cluster is confounding me. As far as I can see the cluster is held by two vertical bolts on rubber bungs, these are beneath the tail plastic and inacessable. There are no screws passing through the cluster itself either horizontally or vertically. This leaves me to think I need to remove rear sidecar mount bolt, remove grab rail bolts, remove one or both side panels and finally have access to the rear cluster. Just for a bulb!

I could take it to the local repair/bodge man and watch how he does it but would be admitting defeat!

    Any insights?

    Couple of piccys...

From above      The centre panel has mount screws to the adjacent side panels which are also inacessible (vertical, heads down)

From behind     the screws you see only hold the relector to the main cluster body.

  2. The nonchalant approach is usually enough.

I have been bitten (nipped) once, the dog in question looked to be the alpha of three so probably territorial, until I chased it off.

I get more trouble when walking my own dog (small breed pup), it likes to challenge the street dogs, which I'm trying to train out of him. Until then I carry a baton, the threat of which, along with controlling my own beast, is enough to see them off.

    • Haha 1
  3. The load carrying capabilities of a step through is a very valid point. However "comfort" is not, the straddle scooters and bikes win hands down for the rider, 50/50 for the pilion.

We have an old banger Click for carrying duties, Nmax for preference.

Next bike, hmmmmmm, choice between Xmax or retro/adventure "proper" bike...

  4. More like next year but really torn between types.

I currently pootle around on a Nmax150, great around town but a bit feeble going further.

Like someone else said I've got used to the automatic thing now and actually like it.

The choice would between a sensible Xmax or a retro classic but I don't want/need anything truly big-bike.

I also quite fancied the Rebel 300 but heard too many stories of mystery engine problems and don't want the 500.

The Kwaka Estrella already mentioned pulls the heart strings...and then someone said 5'6" riding an Interceptor, I'm the same height aaaaaagh.

  5. Stainless steel or glass bowl with a couple of roaches in it, near your tookay's known hangout.

Watch for action and it'll get in the bowl for feeding, cover the bowl.

Or use a brush to make it drop to the floor, cover with bowl or box and slide so.ething flat underneath carefully ( don't harm the beastie ).

Take it a good distance from your home and release it.

Last time we had one it ate all the geckos!

I like them but my wife and every Thai I know does not.

Don't try to handle them as they can give a nasty bite.

  6. The "going" rate is anything from 6 to 10. The actual rate of approx. 4 is based on a single phase property listed as a home.

The rate then changes for property type and/or 3 phase supply and power rating. If the property is listed as a business then there is no more than the 3% discount on consumption-only available to the account holder.

I see no problem for a landlord to add a little on top of the actual consumption in order to cover the other charges on the monthly bill, how much more they charge is the question, allowing for the above.

The most common I've seen is 8.

  7. I brought my HiFi gear over when I first officially moved here, all old stuff, oldest of it 30 years, newest part is 8 years old ( to the poster who questioned the quality of old gear, oh yes it still stands up well now, against the disproportionately expensive high end equipment of today, just needs a service and possibly a dusting of modern components ). I also have a second set of mainly DIY units.

Done above board with the shipper and no tax paid, just a tiny handling fee.

For servicing I'm capable of doing that myself.

Unfortunately if you're here already and now want to bring the stuff over you will be stung, you can make enquiries to see if it's worthwhile or not.

I was interested to read that there are actually some decent outlets in BKK! Next time I go I'll have a shoofty, might treat myself!

  8. Yes you can buy lime cordial very easily.

Most Super Cheap stores keep it and also most drinks warehouses that supply bars etc.

Don't use the sweet stuff intended for syrupy ice drinks, it's far too sickly sweet other drinks e.g. a gimlet.

  9. Depends how far up the coffee scale you want to go.

Most instants are pretty dire with Red Cup pretty near the bottom of the heap.

The proper Italian stove top machines are the best, I liked Lavazza cream ground.

After that, a cafe that has a well set up commercial machine and know how to use it properly.

I've tried lots of pod machines and preferred the Tassimo system with local coffee in compatible pods.

All the above are from living in Europe.

Here in Thailand (Phuket) I'm yet to find a cafe that can make a good straight coffee.

Bon Cafe is decent, Extra Dark Roast pod system.

Personally I now use the Take5 paper pod system, again Extra Dark Roast. It's good enough and cheap.

Laziness keeps me away from bean to cup machines!

  10. It's potentially a big problem. I'm due a run in 3 months and was thinking about this very thing.

Borders closed with an unfriendly immigration, most especially with our lovely(sic) health minister's gormless rant fuelling anti-farang attitudes.

Maybe worth bringing such visa runs forward. Unless immi dept. decide to allow properly reported extensions of stay with a medical certificate added?

  11. As has been said already, it should be fine.

However my wife had a problem a couple of years ago.

The IO refused her Thai PP for no stamp history. She panicked, did not show her previous Thai PP and presented her UK one instead.

If she had stood her ground and asked for a higher up all would have been ok. Basically an ignorant IO and my wife not doing as instructed by myself.

On correcting the situation she got both her UK PP stamped to cancel off her visa and her Thai PP stamped to exit Thailand. On returning only presented the Thai PP without issue.

This was before the auto-gates, that she would not use anyway.

  12. Do not use Pearson!

Other than that I moved to Thailand with my Thai wife so put the entire shipment in her name. No tax to pay as a "returning citizen".

You mention HiFi,  if it is a special system of high quality separates it's worth bringing as Thailand is a wasteland for good audio gear, unless you're a Naimee which is covered in Bangkok.

Other than that only goods of high financial or sentimental value, flog the rest.

  13. According to Mrs P (hotel boss);

Any law abiding hotel will endeavour to see the passport and TM6. They will usually photocopy both along with the latest arrival stamp and/or visa.

    For completing the TM30 they will;

    Enter TM6 number

    Enter passport number

Name of guest as it appears in PP

    DOB

    Nationality

    Gender

    Date of entry to KoT

    Visa type

Immigration port passed on entry to KoT

Many of these fields are not mandatory i.e. if the guest provides less than the above the TM30 can still be registered. This makes the hotel's obligation complete.

She did also state that she had never tried registering someone without a passport number from original PP or DL and would not allow that person entry to the hotel without one.

She also confirmed that spot checks are done on small and medium hotels, no experience of large (>100 rooms).

  14. According to Mrs p, yes the stamp says the op has a 1yr8m suspended sentence for arson, valid for a period of 2yrs. Quoting rule 12.7 it proceeds to state don't allow entry.

One assumes for the 2yr period.

As others have said, speak to friends and the landlord to arrange forwarding your chattles.

  15. Just thought I'd give this thread a suitable ending after receiving such accurate information here and in other threads.

Savannakhet multi O (based on marraige) done. Very straight forward and painless. As I went by air I had to stay in S for a few days (arrival day, application day, pick up day, departure day). On first sight I thought I might get bored but actually found it quite pleasant. Good food, very friendly people, interesting watering holes and some great shops that had stuff I'm yet to find on Phuket so came back with a bagful!

    Thanks again.

  16. Thank you once again.  The Thai consulate in Savannakhet will accept the UK certificate on a multi non-im O (based on marriage), excellent.

Then the British Embassy in BKK was correct in what they said but gave me the wrong link that confused me.

Thanks for the correct one, laborious but makes sense at least. Now I'm pre-armed with all that I can allow plenty of time when the need arises on the horizon.

    Cheers.

  17. A little more confusion regarding the marriage certificate.

We have a Britsh marriage certificate, during my read around it seems I need to somehow register said marriage in Thailand for an acceptable certificate/entry (sai kor) to be presented to the consulate for the visa application.

We rang the local ampur who said the British consulate had to prepare a legalised Thai copy, who in turn said the home office in the UK do it and then I need it stamped at the Thai consulate in the UK!

Sounds really cock-eyed to me, surely there is an easier way?
