I would say the biggest negative change in all the places I visited, with very few exceptions is the decimation of town center businesses, through supermarkets and online trade. And the collapse of public services as a direct result of funding cuts. Former bustling market towns that had busy town centers are now half empty or filled with charity shops, tattoo parlors and takeaway food outlets. In odd spots where independent retail businesses are thriving they are catering to the well off, and provide a clear indication of the two nations the UK had become, those who have and the very many who have not. Moving out has become an option for some, a further separation of those who have from the many that have not. Gated communities are being built in towns across the nation, a sign the wealthy don’t want to be anywhere near the poor, or in extreme that they are becoming fearful of the poor. Non of this is down to immigrants or immigration, non of it is predicted by Powell but it remains the most starkly visible picture of UK towns and cities.

It’s gift to the energy companies. Billions are added to national debt and then handed out to subsidize rapacious energy charges while oil and gas companies take in vast windfall profits. Windfall profits are being backed by public money. What should have been done is tax the windfall profits of oil and gas companies to be directed to those in need. He knew all about the ‘whip hand’. He was a racist. Then, as now, he had his admirers and defenders.

He was talking about civil war, which has not happened, and immigrants (black immigrants) having the whip hand, which has not happened. He was not talking about terrorism, which had already happened. He ignored the then known terrorist threat and singled out non white immigrants for his message of hate. He was a racist. Then as now he had his admirers and defenders.

It is you that’s posting about terrorist attacks, not me. Terrorism is a result of world wide events, including illegal invasions (which the UK took part in) of sovereign countries. I don’t like my country? I’m not sure on what basis you believe it’s ‘my country’, that aside, it isn’t me complaining about the UK is it? Yoi should visit sometime, it really is a wonderful, vibrant, friendly and peaceful place. Powell never predicted terrorism, even though the UK had experience of it. Nor did he predict the vast majority of non white, non Anglo Saxon Britons being proud of their nation, contributing to the welfare and good of the nation, abiding by the law, many serving in the armed forces, police. Not a dodge, direct comments made by the racist Powell. Unfortunately he never made any predictions on the illegal invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan, or the likely consequences of illegal wars.

I never even suggested you are a racist. Powell wasn’t talking about controlling immigration, he was race baiting, his ideas were directed at people on the basis of race, including suggestions of repatriating people. He was a racist, admired and defended then, as now by racists.
