My reading of their litmus tests of reidency (from their website years ago) and from memory,

    involved such things as:

-showing continued ongoing links to Australia.

through having postal address, drivers licence, voting, family ties etc

as well as above, in my case:

    - travelling various places frequently and never actually having a constant postal address/main residence in the other countries, by default can only be an Aus resident?

    - if im working in Aus now and then (even if just temporary) showing yearly tax returns with the same employer, then more likely Aus remains an obvious main place of domicile in the long run.

But yeah, i know the departments all have different rules regarding that,

but also peoples circumstances and plans can change constantly also.

The pub test on the medicare issue...most people i talked to in Aus knew nothing about this issue but when explained, ALL of them more or less said:

"well..you are an Australian citizen so surely you are entitled to Medicare"

granted, coming from family and friends is biased!

Not a big issue as one can hardly access docs and Aus hospitals in Thailand anyway.

And no, i dont crucify people for their info and opinions...

More is the point, thanks for taking the time and energy in giving it!

The question of residency is a quite gray area, because several tests are applied by the ATO. Residency determination is at their discretion, and subject to appeal. I would suggest if one doesn't poke the bear, it won't bite you.

Medicare is cancelled if one is absent from Australia for 5 years straight. I go back to Australia every six months, and I have been issued with two new Medicare cards in the space of ten years, living mainly in Thailand.

It's preferable to maintain residency in Australia if you have investments earning income outside a super fund. As a non-resident, you will be taxed at 30% on any Australian income, and you won't get any franking credits from share dividends.

The only thing that changed in the last few days is that Biden is as elusive as the Lake Pontchartrain monster. And no wonder. The video of his bragging of extorting the Ukrainians is all over the place. He is in real trouble here, and his electoral hopes gone. Contrast to President Trump strutting around like cock-o-the walk and again rightly so. His donations are through the roof, and people are just so sick of this hysterical "we got him now" that has had democrats hyperventilating for 3 years now. Dare I remind that there is an election next year!

Donations are through the roof? Do you have some authoritative source for this? Seems to me your post is hyperventilating as well.

Trump in reality, is the polar opposite of a patriot. He betrays the national security of his nation for dirt on his opponents, he got five deferments from the draft, when his time came to demonstrate if he was truly willing to put it on the line for his country, or be a coward and seek the easy way out. And if you take into account his five major bankruptcies, the billions he has stolen from investors, his "university" students, small contractors, and take into account the fact that they were mostly Americans, this really makes him the least honorable amongst the population, and not a patriot on any level. Only talk of patriotism to fire up his base. Never a demonstration of the real deal, when his butt is on the line.

Dr. Samuel Johnson said " Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel".

  4. To live on 500,000 baht per year, the OP could try Chiang Mai, Buriram etc. Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket would be too expensive.

He would also need to have good health, or health insurance.

He would need to navigate sensibly with respect to Thai women and alcohol. Both can punch holes in a budget in no time.

Transport options are tuk-tuks, songthaews or learn to drive a scooter. On his budget, a car is a stretch.

Plenty of furnished accommodation available in Chiang Mai in the 5000 - 10,000 baht/month range. I assume Buriram, Chiang Rai and Udon Thani would be similar.

He also would need a Plan B to fall back on.

I'm not really the tree-hugging type so don't mind a bit of hormones and antibiotics in my food, I just want to know what the frozen pangasius in Thailand tastes like and if it is a decent substitute for cod?

I eat pangasius about once a week. Not expensive, a fillet is 50-60 baht at Big C. My GF does it in batter for me,  tasty with a salad.

Probably not as firm as cod, but quite adequate.

Spilling whiskey is a party foul if its good whiskey. So tell us? 18 year old or from a jar?

I'd define it as kitchen whisky, as I have lowbrow tastes like you. 18 yo whisky is a furphy, most of the spirit that claims that title is a blend of about 5% of the real stuff with other stuff of various ages. The wonders of brand advertising.

BTW, you are betraying your American origins. Whisky produced in Scotland is whisky. The Irish and Americans add the "e", a rare example of Americans shunning abbreviation.

I am in regular contact with 6 ladies, of the 6, 4 ask me for money almost every time we talk or meet.

On one of the "mating" sites:

    1) after 3 or so conversations, one lady asked me for 400,000 so she could get a water supply to ...her... farm.

    2) claiming to be 20 years old, asked me to 800,000 to pay for college, "take care of you every week ... AFTER .. I get money".

    3) quite a few others with varied stories, the best being, " I need new mobile so I can talk to you".

I do give my 3 year X, on occasions, 1000bt when she asks, usually when she quits a job and gets in money trouble, or gets sick - she actually is sick ( stomach problems ) I usually stay with her after she gets out of ( 3 day or so day ) hospital stay for 3/4 days, no benefits, to make sure she is OK, I still enjoy her company  Colour me a fool, OK.

I'd colour you compassionate, within boundaries. No fool.
