I've been based here for over thirty years, yet to cook my first thing, the great thing about Thailand, especially round Pattaya, is you don't have to cook and I don't have to eat my rubbish cooking!

The old "lets go to my home" trips of yesteryear!
I was married to a Thai girl back in mid 80's and did a few home visits, even got married there. Then after a couple of years I noticed the odour of a large rodent!
Got up before dawn and said "lets go your home?" I could see this had caused mild consternation but off we went. Remember those halcyon days prior to mobile phones well this was they. I made sure that she never got to a pay phone saying that would spoil the surprise. We got off the taxi at the farmhouse, by now consternation had risen to panic! her two teenage kids ( one boy, one girl) were still in bed ( now after 1 o'clock in the afternoon.) It's a no school day I get told so I wander down to the Uncle's shop to have a beer, go straight past the shop and into the school where I talk to the English teacher, they haven't been to school in over two years he tells me, would I like to see the records, No thanks, I thank him profusely for his help and return to the farm via the Uncle's where I had a few beers and a few Mekongs.
Get back and tell the assembled family what I thought of them, I had paid for school fees, text books, uniform, sports gear, pens, paper and all.
I got a taxi to Hua Hin (the nearest town) stayed in a hotel overnight and came back to Paattaya the next day, packed the wife's junk up and left it at reception telling them she no longer lived there. One screaming match later she leaves, divorce took place a week later.

hang on to the bottled water, it'll go off sometime soon!

I've always been amused by Thai construction methods after I saw some 30 years ago a sea front bar being built with similar bricks but using sea water the mix the cement.
I was an aerospace quality engineer prior to retirement but I know that you don't use salt laden sea water to make any lasting structure!

To all those saying a farang should just walk by and mind his own business, I just hope I can walk by while you're getting the S#1t kicked out of you!

I made a boo-boo on my dates a couple of years ago, check in sent to immigration where the whole staff was one very pretty lady in a brown uniform. I approached told her of my plight and she said "I'm not doing all that at this time" (2am) so she just gave me an extension and off I went.

I can not guess why immigration would want you to use the various agents around town!

Sane! I don't think so!
If you think paying a premium of 90% of the cover per year (the premium increasing each year as you get older) is sane then your opinion of sane differs greatly from mine!
-
From the above list it would be 2) for me.
At present it looks like I will be required to pay 90% premium (increasing as I get older) for the mandatory cover every year. If I can afford that I don't need the cover and I don't need to be robbed.

I do have a few million Baht in the bank.
I have been here, with a few working away breaks for 33 years.
I am now 70 with type 2 diabetes and hypertension ( those of my age who don't are the exception.)
I have been asked to pay a premium of 90% of the cover for my medical insurance.
If I can afford to pay the 90% every year then why not just pay the bill if and when I need treatment.
If this is enforced I'm not going to be made a mug of so I will be off, like many others in the same predicament.
Thai banks prepare to hand back many 800,000 Bahts!

I had a soda stream in the UK, much cheaper just to buy soda water, threw it away!
-
Very nice if you're under 70 and have no prior medical conditions but for us retirees with such the premiums are more than the required minimum set figures so you pay the 440,000 Baht every year whether or not you need any treatment.
I'll give it a month to see what really happens but if they want this money out of me (for practically nothing) I'm off.

With Trump as Commander in Chief of the US armed forces I would be a trifle hesitant at taking such strong arm tactics against any US citizen.

All hotels are reporting bookings way down on even last year (not a good one.) If this government (nanny state) keeps taking all enjoyment out of life for visitors here they will kill this town. Think about it how many tourists hire cars or motorbikes during Songkran? It's all locals on the roads plus a few expats who tend to avoid Songkran anyway.

Don't any of the Thai population understand that their bad manners and shady politics and lousy safety standards are a massive international loss of face!

As I am now 70 (yesterday) I'm probably older than all the parents, aunts, uncles, various children, buffaloes and all other hangers on combined, if their family ethic is to look after the elders they shouldn't they send any spare cash to me?
Yeah like that's going to happen!

You seem to have it in for Kevin. Two posts on two different threads saying the same thing. I don't know Kevin and I also think anyone who travels without insurance is an idiot but give him a break. He hasn't asked for any funding and allegedly didn't know anything about it.
Don't be so pig headed, I'm 70 with diabetes 2 and hypertension just try and get insurance, I keep enough money in the bank to cover any emergencies!

Never pay anyone anywhere without a receipt!

Let's be real here, what's the chance of a sincere apology from any wife/girlfriend from any nation?

I live here, have no family, am over 70 with hypertension and type 2 diabetes, you try and get health insurance!

Once in thirty three years that is other than bank, hotel, border, immigration, I had a car crash and had show my international driving license which was with my passport.
The police were called, I'd been hit up the rear by a bus, no injuries but lots of arguing, the bus driver was told that he was in the wrong and the bus company had to pay the repairs.
