A happy new year to you all on this fourth day of the year. The air pollution is back with a vengeance, there is a strong smell of biomass burning and the AQI in my area is at 159 - Unhealthy - and the pm2,5 reading is at 71,3 which is almost fifty percent above the Thai danger level. The question is which mask to wear, the virus one or the pollution one!

Happy New Year to u 2.

As a matter of interest,  which AQ recording station are you referencing?

I once asked my ex wife why do esan people like Thaksin so much when they proved he is corrupt?  The answer was simple, we know he is corrupt but he is the only prime minister who gave anything back to the people everyone else just take take take.

Did tell her that Thaksin took way more than anyone else, even doing so recently via Yinglucks rice scheme?

And it was Thaksin propaganda machine which awarded credit to him for Rama 9s initiatives like electrification and.village water supplies.

Actually it's a positive step forward. Slowly opening up to selected countries and doing rapid covid tests upon arrival at the airport. My guess is in 2021 there will be lots more freeing up, allowing hassle-free entry to people from certain countries, who have been vaccinated and do a rapid covid test at the airport. It's the best we can hope for at the present time.

Nice to read a positive post on this forum of naysayers and decrepit aged expats with nothing but a computer keyboard to play with.  I LIKE an optimistic expat with brain cells still functioning.  ????

Not for myself mind but, I'm sure the Thais will hang on every word.

hahaha ... Thai's, especially the majority, those in rural areas, don't give a rats ass for politics.  Bangkok is merely a source of income and mainly from family working there.

    K. Prayuth saved Th from a Thaksin backed redshirt revolution, tamed most red dissenters and rooted out mr T's rural network of corrupt officials.  Since then it's been a hard road to hoe due to the World economy yet the Government has clamped down on a raft of major corruption practices most notably in land titles and Govt services.

But this is a thread about the proposed 2nd airport and I for one am quite happy to see that project shelved whilst renovation and extension of the existing facility is already well underway.

Yeah pollution has nothing to do with the tourists. What made a change of things was not long after the coup started enforcing midnight curfews on CM and at the same time more and more Chinese. As well that the baht became stronger and everything else more expensive.

Guess the only future for CM is loads of annoying Chinese tourists anyway. Will never be like it used to be before 2014. Same time we should not underestimate how fast tourism could be back up quite a bit if they made some deal with China out of nowhere as it is a near by destination.

Oh and to the airport thing, why they not use their time properly renewing the airport now it is quiet??? TIT. I tell you now, they will start doing big renovations during the first coming high season with tourists lol.

Take your blinkers off.  The coup had little to do with tourist arrivals.  Twas a mere blip.  Global financial woes lead to the gradual decline in US, EU,  Aus and others staying at home.  Chinese tours partially filled the vacuum and investment by Cn nationals increased as they sought safe havens for their future.  The BRI initative and proximity to home made Thailand an obvious choice as other countries wised up and closed their doors.

This government is the best Thailand has had in many decades despite some of the ministers being anti farang.  Mind you, if they read TV it's probably no surprise .... lol

Who is the snitch who gave him to the rats ?

Depends who you believe.  My friend in wangtan said everyone knew the Jap was a druggie and at least one neighbor complained to authorities many months back. Media reports say RTP was alerted via Japan Gov. which indicates IP tracing and surveilance.

I wonder how they trace IP via twatter?  Folk I know say it's anonymous, can't trace.  Shame that these guys got done as I believe the product was pritty hi Q.

It's true that BnB has had a huge impact and I'm surprised they have not finished it off. They cracked down in Chiang Mai and now hardly any condos allow short lets - and i understand that strategy but they should take it further.

I'm not sure how they could crack down on the new wave of BnB properties planned and under construction.  I know of 4 new, 2 recently finished, and 1 older property in one mooban which are Cn financed and occupied by (or planned for) FIFO tourists.  The new builds are huge, occupying 95% of the ~1 rai lots and with 2 or more 2 or 3 story 'homes' ... with multiple rooms.

  9. Has anyone mentioned Grace as the can-do-anything visa agent?  Or is that taboo on here.

In 10 years I have found the retirement extension quite simple to renew beyond the initial application ... but that's just a case of sorting out the paperwork and procedure which differs from region to region.

Chiang Mai Immi, once a fearful place to visit, is now modern, streamlined, and with happy helpful staff.

I pay attention to 2.5 levels....this is the size reaching your lungs and not passing through the sacs...

Exactly.  2.5 levels made up of bushfire smoke and dust are nowhere near the harmful levels of nano, or sub 2.5ppm particles, found near busy roads or industrial centres like Kandur, India. The Nano particles DO pass thru onto blood stream.

Far too much emphasis and journalistic <deleted> is spent on reporting CM 2.5 smoke and dust haze.

    Fun fact !
Countries that use toilet paper instead of "the left hand and water" have almost NO cases of cholera.

Countries that DO use the "left hand and water" DO have cholera. In some cases, a lot of it.
    * In case you are wondering, cholera is usually transmitted through contact with infected feces. Often the feces are defecated into a water system (directly or through a sewage system) and people that use that same water (for cooking, cleaning, drinking, etc) get infected and then when they relieve themselves, it usually ends up back in the same water system.
One symptom of Cholera is diarrhea (naturally).

    cholera_009.jpg.3f5f4ac3f8172535c81685ddb71df4da.jpg

Keep in mind that the WHO only shows cases that have been reported. For example, if places like Sri Lanka and Indonesia don't report any cases to the WHO, then they won't appear on the map.
I'd find it really hard to believe that some of countries shown don't have any cases of cholera, especially when they are surrounded by countries that do (and therefore probably share a lot of the same causes).

Some developed countries also report cases of cholera which apparently are linked (usually) to eating seafood which has been in contact with contaminated sewage.

Note this is similar to the manner in which the "liver fluke" worm is transmitted in Thailand. Fish in ponds eat the Flukes. People eat the fish and the Flukes enter the bloodstream, taking up residence in the liver (and often causing liver cancer as a result). The Flukes lay eggs and many of those get filtered out of the body and end up being dumped (defecated) into ponds or septic tanks which then (often) get flooded during the rainy season and have their contents mixed into the water of the ponds and klongs where the eggs then hatch and the cycle begins again.

Note as well that using a bum gun also usually results in the a lot of the feces becoming "aerosolized", with wee tiny little particles floating around in the air similar to how tiny molecules of water float in the air when someone coughs or sneezes (one of the main ways the Covid virus is spreading in fact).

Lovely to think about isn't it ? All those tiny droplets of aerosolized feces floating around your bathroom just waiting for you to breath them in.............. ????

will the pollution have any effect if infected with covid?

Not unless you self isolate in a tent alongside Loi Kroh road.  55

Try to understand the difference between smoke and smog or smoke haze and chemical emissions.  A few kms outside of CNX cbd the pollution is primarily dust particles greater than 2.5pm.   Within the cbd and alongside busy roads the real killers are nano particles of CO and NOX.

Over 60 and with existing respiratory problems ppl with Covid 19 may experience further problems due to altitude and dust particles though our dry heat could mitigate the latter.

  14. Advice sought on sequence of events to mitigate time spent at CM Immi.

A./ We have 2 houses a few 100 metres apart and I am registered (online TM30) at the old one after just returning from o/s.  I already obtained a yellow book for new house several months ago when we 1st registered it at the Amphur office.  Our transition from old to new house is a work in progress.

B./ I renewed my passport, received in post yesterday, as only 5 months remained in old one.

C./ Retirement extension due b4 20th of April.

    Now, my questions:-

    1.  a. Should wife register for TM30 online and report me at NEW address BEFORE I do renewal (next week)?   or ...

        b. Simply enter all new address details on the TM7 and present yellow book along with all other docs.

    2.  Do I need to have old stamps transferred from old passport to NEW before applying for renewal or will IO simply accommodate that procedure at the same time?

    Thanks in advance.

Poverty may be a larger obstacle.  The poor forrage the forest for mushrooms.  The poor also accept deals from big business to grow corn.  Burning for corn and mushrooms takes place at the peak pollution period before the rainy season.  Rice burning is spread out since there are 2 or 3 crops per year.

That is one of your better posts, an informed opinion.

As to why we have minor pollution this early, in winter, one should remember that November saw little or no rain and high temperatures dried things out to create dust and an ideal rice chaff burn.

Current haze contains as much dust as smoke.
