  1. It’s getting harder to simulate a US presence. I have bank accounts and a credit card with a famous New York bank. They use an outside service and you have to give an American cell phone that’s in your name at the address you say you are in America and that most of the calls are made in that area to verify with them I got a tea mobile pre-paid, but that didn’t work they wanted to postpaid basically, if you’re overseas they want to know and they may not want you to have an account or have one on worse terms.

  2. As someone also mentioned, rumor has it that the plates are delayed because the dealer must pay the head office for the car first, and they are keen to float the money for awhile. Agency will process in a day of so; you can try insisting on no red plate.

  3. You have 6 months after you turn 65 to enroll in any Medicare Advantage (HMO, good only on your county with their doctors/hospitals, except for USA emergencies) or Medigap (pays for most deductible and copay to any Medicare doctor/hospital in USA). After the 6 months, unless possibly if you had other coverage or certain life changing events) Advantage and Medigap plans may require medical underwriting–they may not take you unless you are sick. Some of these planes provide a 60 day travel coverage, $250 deductible and $50,000 lifetime maximum. You cannot say you live overseas to sign up for any of these. I keep Plan Hi F Medigap (covers everything after $2000 deductible) in USA + Part D (bought from insurance company, not directly from government like Part A And B) dental and vision on USA.  Won’t help me in Thailand but if I return to USA I don’t want to face waiting periods, open enrollment period, lack of coverage choice.

  4. I’ve lived in Udomsuk for a long time, in a ratty but cheap Thai building. It’s a huge street food area, though you may not care about that. Also there a new mall with a Tops Market at Punnawitti, the next BTS stop, see what you think. Otherwise at On Nut there are many condos with foreigners and Tesco, Big C, and McDonald’s. Opposite Tesco on the same side of Sukhumvit, there’s a Complex with a farang bar.

  5. Supplements and Advantage Plans are allowed to cover emergencies on the first 60 days of a trip, at 80%, with a $250 deductible and a $50 lifetime limit. So you can use overseas in any meaningful way. Nevertheless I keep Part A and B with a High F supplement. I come to USA fir a few weeks a year, keep a residence there. I also have kept dental, vision, and Part D, s cheap plan. It’s not a perfect solution but if I get sick and can make it back to the USA it will help me. The plan F covers some things outside of Medicare, the 60 day travel benefit, Silver Sneakers (free US gyms which I do use). And it’s good on any USA state at any doctors or hospitals that take Medicare. Advantage Plans use a network of providers in your USA county only, except for out of state emergencies. I can’t get thai social security (government health insurance) and I have thai Aetna but it excludes anything cardiac and it’s injury and accident coverage is very low. I may drop it next year and get accident insurance from my bank.

Lot of things confusing. For example "convert" a TV to non o inside Thai you need show funds came from outside. Apply non o consulate outside then that's not a requirement. Go figure.

I got TV changed to non O 90 day at Chaengwattana, then 1 year extension by ฿800K method. I bank at Krungsri, Bangkok Bank wouldn’t open account. Used TransferWise, my USA banks don’t do international wires. Showed as domestic through Bangkok Bank. Following a post in a Facebook Forum, I got transactions number from Krungsri, went to Bangkok Bank head office on Silom Road, 2nd floor international department. They gave me a letter stating it’s international transfer. Chaengwattana accepted it.

  7. Apparently all transfers from overseas come through Bangkok Bank. I have Krungsri. I transferred from USA by TransferWise. It showed as domestic. Krungsri gave me codes of the 2 transactions involved. I went to Bangkok Bank International Department on the 2nd floor of the main office on Silom Road. They find the transactions and gave me the letter for immigration saying they were from abroad, as required.
