  1. On advice received here or in a Facebook forum, I opened savings account at Krungsri Bank, Sukhumvit Soi 31, Bangkok. I dressed well, took US Embassy letter affirming residence, condo lease, US passport with tourist visa, and internet printout of US bank accounts with good balance. Any contact with the staff there goes like this: "Do you have work permit?" "No, retired." Various staff come and discuss with them. I received savings account, bankbook, ATM/Visa debit card, internet and mobile banking. Note: later I needed letter for visa saying that money was transferred from out of the country, they refused, saying it came through Bangkok Bank as intermediary. Bangkok Bank, Main brand, 2nd floor international desk, did give me the letter. On the day I went to Chiangwattana immigration, the Krungsri Bank there did give me the letter stating bank balance. Also, I wanted a separate account so large balance not accessible through debit card, they refused, demanded work permit. I asked Bangkok Bank at Central World for account, they said yes but no ATM card, no Internet or mobile access, and they wanted my original embassy letter which I needed for immigration.

  2. I applied to tax ID at Bang Na office, very difficult. They need: application, Passport, lease, embassy letter or residence, landlord's ID, house book of the condo, even though I am not on it, deed for condo, landlord's house book where he lives, bank book, and form in thai signed by landlord stating I have permission to have a tax ID while living at his condo.  I was going to give up but landlord and the man at the tax office said this is normal and I should work with the process.

  3. I'm on USA tourist visa, intend to convert to retirement visa. I opened savings account at Ayuthya/Khrungsri Sukhumvit 31 in Bangkok with 1)passport 2)1-year condo contract 3)landlord's Thai ID copy 4) internet print of of us back account with decent balance 5)USA residential address. Long time, 7 tellers looking it over and talking about it. I received debit visa and mobile app. I needed letter of balance and source for visa purposes, they had issue with it. I asked Bangkok Bank at Central World. They offered savings account with passbook, no internet or mobile access. I had US embassy notarized form as to my Thai address. They said if I opened the account they must keep the original, which cost $50 and all day at the embassy. I said no thank you. I'll try another branch.
