I had a physio appointment at 1.30pm today at a very very good Hospital in BKK. I used 70% alcohol before I left the unit to wash my hands and at the same time took my temp. I got to the car park and had my hands rewashed and temp taken again before I could even get to my Vespa. I thought I would buy a bottle of Gin in case there is a lock-down and so the Supermarket kindly washed my hands and lasered my forehead once again. 10 minutes later I arrived at the Hospital and they gave me a thorough cleaning and temp check before I was allowed in. The lift had a hand gel machine and I couldn't resist it. I checked in where they nodded at the hand gel and then I was led to get my BP, temp & heart rate checked. Upon my return to the Condo I had another temp check and got doused in gel once again. In the lift was another hand wash gel and I thought "In for a penny, in for a pound" and had another splash around. So all in all, in the space of 2 hours I had 9 hand washes and 6 temp checks. Am I alone thinking the world has gone crazy?

I largely live alone. I have never had a problem with that. I could go out, have a stroll, drive somewhere for lunch, sit by the river....in fact I could do whatever I felt like. I could leave Thailand and spend time in my house in France and it's large garden and orchard. I could take a short trip to somewhere new and interesting. All I had to do was decide how I felt and then do it. I have found the last few days very uncomfortable though. In trying to work this through and understand why I have a build up of panic from time to time is now clear to me. It is because that freedom of choice has been taken away. If there had been no CV I am not sure that I would have done anything really different over the last week, it is the fact that I don't have the choice. It is not helped by the fact my wife is stuck in Jakarta. Normally that would be OK, but it is the fact I cannot fly there and she cannot fly here that is causing the stress. Strange isn't it? I would describe myself as a person of very strong resilience, but I had one very iffy day last week when I felt a surge of panic. I am over that now and I am getting my brain into gear about the new reality of our lives. I do however feel the OP has absolutely no right to judge anyone or how they deal with this very disturbing phenomenon in their own way.

why is he self insured? i never heard about this
Basically Scott, people insure when the likely costs are going to be too high for them to pay from their savings without making a real impact. There are people who one way or another have accumulated significant savings. So the person in my example may be 75 with pre-existing conditions and insurance would be very expensive. He has US$1million in savings so why should he spend money to pay premiums for US$100k of cover which he may never use. In the same way the person in my example may be a rich young person who has accumulated millions - why would he ever want to buy insurance. These people are termed "self-insured". Basically rather than relying on the vast funds of an Insurance Company to pay for your treatment or losses, you have provided your own cover. Hope this helps and for anyone else wondering too. Cheers RtS

Oooh do tell....why does it have to be in a Thai Bank Account? I can pay my Hospital direct from my bank account in Hong Kong, or Singapore? My point, which clearly whizzed straight over your head, is that is someone can prove they have US$100k of free savings should not need to buy expensive insurance, especially if they are excluded from doing so through ridiculous costs of pre-existing conditions. There is a technical term, which you clearly have never heard of called the self-insured. Most of the people legally here on a Retirement Visa may fall into this category - not all granted.
It is just another crass TV comment -"all people should be insured".
Think about it.....oh then again!

Understood, but the way you were describing the legal situation (?) made me think about what we can and can't do in reality. Cheers RtS

You see, that is how a challenged mind thinks. You really feel that the person who can show a Bank Book with $1m in it needs to buy expensive insurance - he is self-insured FCS.

For the third time: Public pools have to close. The local authorities don't have jurisdiction over private/condominium pools. That's up to condominium management.
Are you sure about that? I am one of about 3 residents left in our Condo and I am on the Board, yet I found the pool closed (in fact the whole roof top was closed including Gym). I went to the JP Office and they informed me it was a requirement from Bangkok Municipal Authority and they had to comply. I managed to get them to agree to leave the Fire Door open so that I can go up and sit by the pool if I need a break from my modest unit, and they agreed to that so long as I promised not to go in the pool. They may not have jurisdiction, but it seems like they have heavyweight influence here in BKK. There was genuine concern that I might dip my toes!!

That's encouraging news. Mine expires on 28 May, I might just get it renewed early just in case things change yet again.
I have just returned from CW with my Visa extended for 14 months (still 2 to run) including multi-entry. Reason was I didn't want to hot foot out of here only to find I could not return until after my Extension expired (currently no foreigners of any kind allowed in). It cost a bit more I think, but in effect I managed to renew both about 8 weeks early. Total time in CW about 3.5 hours but I used my trusty Advisor to work his magic.
For anyone with the same worries I would get down there soonest. It is actually quiet at the moment because certain Visas have been relocated to another building. Do take a face mask though. A huge weight of my shoulders. I no longer feel trapped!

Lets do some very basis maths. It isn't perfect because I have not drilled down to world averages per age group and splits between male and female, but it is a simple analysis based upon just 2 assumptions. You can play with the numbers to fit your own assumptions. My numbers are strictly limited to the 55 and over segment.
Firstly some facts:
Total Population of Thailand. 68,615,858 (July 2018 est.)Age structure 0-14 years: 16.73% (male 5,880,026 /female 5,598,611)15-24 years: 13.83% (male 4,840,303 /female 4,649,589)25-54 years: 46.12% (male 15,670,881 /female 15,972,254)55-64 years: 12.35% (male 3,970,979 /female 4,503,647)65 years and over: 10.97% (male 3,289,576 /female 4,239,992) (2018 est.)Now the assumptions:
1. 50% of people aged over 55 get CV
2. 25% of these will die
Risk Assessment:
1. 8,002,097 in this age bracket will get infected
2. 2,000,524 will die
That is 2.91% of the population. You have to deduct the number of people who would have died of another cause within the same time frame.
If through Government sponsored measures we keep it down to 15% that are infected then the death total in this age group would be 600,157 or 0.87% of the population.

Having a passport of these countries or flying in /having visited these countries ? So an Indian flying in from Italy would not be subject to the requirement ? There is something seriously wrong here. I would buy it if it reads "flying in from / visited "Britain, Denmak, France etc....")
There is nothing about this on the TAT Info website. More fake news I suspect and hope
To the idiots who say that no-one wants to come here and to close the Boarders, my wife is due to fly in from Indonesia on Wednesday. At the moment she can get here. I have seen her for 7 days so far this year so this is a big thing for us. There is life beyond tourism and people still need to travel for many reasons.

Will anybody notice the closure, our local huit a huit (8 till 8.) shop opened at 9 am closed for lunch for about one and a half hours and shut at 1800hrs.
Ha Ha. The same in St Aulaye until one day it closed forever!
It always made me smile, but the locals never could quite see it.
If it was 8 till 8 (including all food breaks and travel time) then they would be right.

Why don't they simply announce that Thailand has closed for business and may reopen at some future date. That way we all know what is going on.

Great stuff.
There is pollution in Udon Thani, but it is buried underground somewhere. I refer to Agent Orange, which was stored in the city (thousand of drums of it), for use in Laos and Vietnam. When the US military departed, it was left behind. Not a concern until the drums decay and the poison seeps out. But in the meantime Udon Thanites can enjoy their life pollution free. A few little fires don't bother us.
An ex-serviceman friend of mine has been trying to get info' on Agent Orange for 20 years. No luck to date.
Tell him to visit the war Museums in Vietnam (Hanoi and Saigon) - he will get plenty of information and meet people who have suffered in real life. A shameful chapter in world history. Of course most of those responsible are either dead now or retired somewhere a long long way from Udon Thani/

A slight variation to the theme. Leave for 2 weeks in Japan, all paid in full then arrive back in Thailand for 12 days then fly to UK (I am a UK citizen).
If, in the interim they add Japan to the list will I be prevented from leaving Thailand for my home country after 12 days into a 14 day quarantine?

4. Soi 7/1 - simply ghastly, the whole lot!
hmmm That's my go to spot ahahaaa, There's an Irish Pub all the way down on the right. This is the Soi the movie "Hangover" filmed the riot scene.
Ooops sorry!

Thanks everyone - all really helpful comments actually. I realise that it is a bar and not a pub and that I am probably in the wrong country. Also...never disclose on TV that you fancy an afternoon beer!
Nana is in the headline because Nana BTS is parked between Soi 7 and Soi 11 which were the main areas of my focus. Could hardly call it Siam, could I? ????

I once wasted 6 months in Bangkok right around the same area. Found it boring as all hell and couldn't wait to leave.
Find a good woman and travel around.
I have a lovely wife and we do spend most of our lives traveling around, but today is hot and I just fancied a cool beer. Silly thing to do in this area as you say (but see later post) ????

Actually there is a ray of light at the end of the tunnel. Soi 11 next to Zanzibar (same ownership) is a nice little beer garden, but best of all is Sunrise Bistro Thai Kitchen. Newly renovated TB90 a pint and the best TYG soup I have found in this area. I don't do this every day by the way, just a very loose end so to speak!
Thanks for the advice.

Yes which is now an Irish Pub. Good idea. Maybe I will head that way and get some exercise to boot. Cheers

I live in Soi 7, Sukhumvit 300 metres from the BTS. For some reason I fancied a late afternoon pint. What a diabolical choice I faced...
1. Soi 3 - no thanks unless you want to pretend to be in Dubai or Mumbai
2. Soi 5 - Gullivers is like a Funeral Parlour at best and there is nothing else unless you want to sit by the Pool in Belair
3. Soi 7 - the apology for a cluster of pubs at the top end is probably the worst collection of Bars in the entire world. Hopefully they will all be bankrupt very soon.
4. Soi 7/1 - simply ghastly, the whole lot!
5. Soi 11 - Hemingways is not even a shadow of its former self. Bottom end will find good pints at TB280 a glass. Once a great Soi, now a shabby building site. Aussie Sports Bar (which is soul-less) and the German Bar are about the only things holding it together.
6. Sukhumvit main road - crappy bars with the world's ugliest and fattest hostesses
God damn it, this is suppose to be the best drinking area in SEA. I live here and can't even find a bar that I want to face going to.
Demolish the whole area between Soi 3 and Soi 13 and start again.
Can someone throw me a lifeline?
Cheers RtS

I have 2 UK passports. I used to travel extensively and could not work if my passport disappeared for a week or two for a visa. I find the UK very understanding if you have a good case.

Whilst I await the avalanche of doubters to comment, I have met up with a fellow inmate at the Condo whose Cousin is one of the World's leading Virologists who was flown in by Singapore to help them at the start of this crisis. I assume therefore he knows more about what he is talking about than me and 99.999% of us on this Forum. To cut a long story short he said that 3 countries were well placed to deal with CV-19 - Singapore, Taiwan and believe it or not Thailand. Whether he is right or wrong, it has given me a little more confidence in what is happening here. BTW I had an Antibody Test this morning and it was negative - booooo!
