  1. This man who attempted to kill left-leaning figures is an outlier for sure, but so is Trump and his behaviour of antagonizing people and encouraging that they be abused. There are many examples of this in his speech and tweets. I have never heard or seen Obama do this. And while there are rare occasions of left-leaning figures urging people to defend themselves, it is clear that Trump's urging his fans at rallies to beat the shit off the Democrats is having an impact. Is the attack on the synagogue another example of Trump's anti-Semitic right wingers going nuts? (Please do not comment on this as my post will be removed for causing others to go off-topic.) I am just making a link to support the thesis.

The bigger question about this individual is why he is so antagonistic towards the left-leaning party? According to this article, he was a body-builder who might have been shooting himself with steroids.

Yes, Trump is one of the causes, but there are many. This 56 year old man was working in a pizza restaurant as a delivery man and used to work as a male dancer (https://www.foxnews.com/us/package-bomb-suspect-told-colleagues-everything-that-wasnt-white-didnt-belong-in-the-world-former-boss). He is 56. That is not what a man who is 56 should be doing. He portrayed himself or perhaps was some kind of a manager, recruiter, choreographer for a male stripper place. Is this the type of work that one is supposed to have at 56? He declared to his boss that, in effect, he was a white-supremacist. He had worked as a bouncer who might have done steroids (https://edition.cnn.com/2018/10/27/politics/cesar-sayoc-mail-bomb-suspect/index.html). So, he was on drugs. These affect the brain. He had some college education. It looks like he got beaten by the 2008 crash and lost his home in 2012. He is not an outlier. There must be many people like him getting part-time, low-paying jobs. The real US unemployment rate is not 4% or so and has not been for a decade now, but there is not a day when you are told that the economy is doing well, that there is a record setting low 4% unemployment rate. It look it is more like 20% according to many websites (https://www.foreignpolicyjournal.com/2018/03/08/make-believe-america-why-the-us-unemployment-rate-doesnt-indicate-economic-recovery/). (Please do not debate this as your post will be deemed off-topic and removed, This person has written a whole book on the topic and supported it with evidence. There are many websites with credible evidence that the situation is not as great as it is made to be. In fact, Trump did use the 18 to 20% numbers in his campaign.) Records show that this guy threatened to bomb a utility company and stole some pipes from a store around 2000. Was he falling behind in his payments? His life had turned bad. It is hard to make ends meet in the USA and it has been for a decade, even under Obama. Democrats do lie too Both parties, on economic policies, are serving the corporations that help them get elected. How many banksters have gone in jail under the Democrats and the Republicans? De-regulations of corporations has been happening for decades now, under all parties, including Clinton. Why have banks been allowed from 1999 on to invest money when this was a cause of the major crash in the 1920's (The glass-Steagall Act)? What is the real unemployment rate for people like this guy. It looks like he got beaten by the 2008 crash and lost his home in 2012. Trump does not look like a normal Conservative and he could have perceived the Democrats as unhelpful considering his bankruptcy. That could cause a person (any person) to go mad, become irrational, vote for Trump, who promises a lot. It would not take much for him to go rogue and try to defend his cherished leader who has --ironically--shown no mercy. I think it is worth studying this individual to see what caused the underlying problems. He might be the canary in the coal mine. I think Trump and him are just symptoms of larger more fundamental problems that are plaguing the American system.

PS: Do not debate the elements that I broach in this post. These elements attempt to demonstrate that this man's attempt at bombing have many causes. Yes, he is a Trump supporter and, yes, Trump might have pushed him over the edge, but things are never so simple.

That is an amazingly insignificant anecdote. Maxine waters tell her crowd to harass republicans wherever they are found. Hilary tells people to abandon civility when dealing with the right.

There is a bit of a difference between the concept of abandoning incivility or harassing people in an elevator (Hatch dismissed them rudely and did not engage with them or wanted to at any time) AND saying all that Trump has been saying about hurting physically anti-Trump people. If i recalled, there were 2 women with cell-phones and Hatch had 2 security guards whom I am sure are well trained to handle any (pun intended) ... calls and much more. He did not look one bit afraid of anything. Now bombs are a little different.

Open Reddit/conservative or similar right wing comment platform and read for days, examples of things the left does to make the right angry.  I know it's not the echo chamber you are comfortable with, but it is good to see what the other side is saying.

You did not read my post very carefully. One more time.

On moral issues the list will be long. But, as I said, both parties on economical issues are pretty close, if you remove the hubris or the constant Trump marketing/hype that he sells.

So, real unemployment figures have been manipulated by both parties. Google it. The real unemployment is around 18 to 20%. In fact, Trump used to use this figure when Obama was boasting. Of course, Trump also boasts about the 4% fabricated unemployment figure. Google real usa unemployment. (It is also worth looking at participation rates and real wage VS inflation figures. Now that T-shirt and all from China will start to cost more thanks to the trade war, inflation should pick up, nullifying any wage increases, if any.)

On the banksters, both parties have spared them.

Debt and deficit-wise, Trump is raising both. Obama lowered both. All I know is that China and Japan are selling their US debt and that should keep the USD low or lower for a while.

So, here, I mentioned 3. It is off-topic.

I do subscribe to Foxnews along my usual left-leaning/independent feeds. As I said, GREY matters, but one should really be worried about a news outlet called Fox. It is not what they say that is so much problematic, it is what they are leaving out.

  4. 28 minutes ago, canuckamuck said:

People keep insinuating that it is Trump's rhetoric that is making the right wing angry. I can assure you, it is the left making them angry. The list of reasons is endless, but it all boils down to the deconstruction of America and everything that contributed to a wonderful quality of life. Forcing moral people into an unnatural society is a recipe for depression and mental illness. Threatening peoples borders makes people want to defend their land. And on and on it goes.

If the list is endless, surely you could present some examples.

Btw, I think it is convenient to frame the debate along black and white lines, democrats and republicans, left and right. Corporations are the puppet masters corrupting many politicians of both parties. The Dem. party uses moral issues to appear different, but on economic policies they are not that different. De-regulation has been a hallmark of both parties. That being said, there are representatives of both parties that seem to have a spine and a heart. There are plenty of entitled white men and women on both side of the aisle. Progressives seem a bit less corrupt.

This bomber seems to belong into a mental asylum, not a jail. He is an outlier. On the other hand, Trump went too far with his egomaniac attention-seeking drama and marketing. It would be easy to verify if Trump pushed him to act, but the FBI will conveniently protect the establishment, even a guy as unappealing as Trump.

1st pitch: Are there many Democrats white supremacists? I don't know many. You?

Jet setter is amazes me how the junior schools say "They Are Teaching English" when they have 40 students in a class for 4hrs per week. Most the teachers cannot speak decent English.

Btw, my username is JeStsetter, but it could have been ILovePunPunToo! I hope that is her woman's name too. LOL

Yes, 40 students is a joke to teach English, especially if you are in Tak. 4 hrs per week is not much. If I was a teacher here I would do my darnest to find real people and real situation to make the teaching relevant, including blank stares of English-speaking expats not comprehending the fish-fish snake-snake bits. In fairness, the schools in the boonies should get more money to allow this to happen and so should the teachers (for legitimate learning of English). I am sure the prettiest of all will find a way to improve her English. LOL English is a hard monster to tame. Imagine a world where everyone could easily learn English. But I am off-topic.

It's rather off topic but Thai spelling has also not been reformed for a long time, while Laos, with a similar writing system reformed its spelling after the communist takeover to make it easier to learn.

Thank you, Arkady, for the interesting reply in which you make strong counter-arguments for keeping English as is.

Interesting titbit on how Laos was upgraded to be easier to learn. It is worth noting that the Finnish spelling system was designed at around the same time that the English spelling system was and, yet, they could not be more different in terms of "engineering".

I do not wish to go off-topic, but the OP was about a generalization (based on this news story): how Thai people cannot generally make long-term plans. I simply presented an example showing that sometimes other cultures/countries have plans that need upgrades. As you have alluded to, there are plenty of examples showing that Thais can make long-term plans. Thais decided to build the new Bkk airport for instance. It was touted at the time by the naysayers as being too big and too far. How big can Bkk get? Will the airport become too small?

English also preserves original spellings from other languages which is  one of the reasons that spellings are different.

Interesting! Are all foreign words coded and profiled this way? Please message me with examples.

True. It is S. Johnson who put this in place 250 years ago, but as Finnish proves, it did not need to be done this way.

On the other hand it makes it easy to figure out the the meanings of new long words taken from other languages, if you happen to know that language, usually Latin or Greek.

True, but this is not a slam dunk. A more accurate phonemic representations of written words (no matter how big they are) makes it easier to figure out the meaning of ANY new words as one hears them uttered in many different contexts. One can make the link between the written word and the spoken word in a more accurate and reliable manner instantly The first time a learner sees the spelling of words as "eight" or "height" (and thousands of irregularly or oddly spelled words), they will not be able to make those links (utterances + meaning to orthographic + meaning). This is why Finnish, Spanish, Italian learners can decode in a matter of weeks, but also comprehend words a larger number of words faster. A learner could decode any word after s/he has learned the alphabet, in matters of weeks, not years. As I have stated it also opens the door to more progressive pedagogies and better social mobility chances.

These polysyllabic words would be a mess if reduced to a baby spelling system.

It is true that inferences that can be made between related polysyllabic words would be  weaker, more difficult with a more more transparent spelling system, but (a) these words are far and few, (b) the consonances are usually the same/these links are preserved to a large degree, (c) these multisyllabic words are learned after a few years, not in the fist 3 years of learning (in a native-like environment), and (d) context can help in most cases. If we were to respell "photo" as "foto" all the words that have "photo" would still be linked on a morphological level, even in the rare events of vowel changes: fotocopy/fetografer. I do agree that --in those rare instances-- the link would be obscured, but one would still be able to make these inferences. It is worth noting that there are a lot of false positives currently. Is "legal" about "legs"? Granted, it is also true that there will be other false positives if a new system was to be put in place. On the other hand, I agree it is one advantage of the current English spelling system, but I am sure we would agree that it does not help at all the most fragile of learners (the young, the lower socio-economic children, and the beginners, even the most advantaged type) for the first 3 years of learning. Also, it does not help in terms of pronunciation, esp, for foreign learners and for those new written words. A morphological spelling system has a lot more negatives.

A baby spelling has its appeal. We know that the rates of illiteracy and "dyslexia" are often half as high with languages that have a transparent spelling system. If the way the English spelling system was so beneficial, wouldn't the stats be reversed? I have stated all of the other advantages before. There are many, Simplicity does not mean stupidity. Have you seen those electrical cables hanging from polls in Asia? That is the ultimate example of complexity, but it is a sure pain to fix. We all know that internal combustion engine cars are complex machines that are much more difficult to fix than the newer and simpler electrical cars. The external design of the car (the language) will not be altered. A spelling system is a superficial element. It only represents in writing what is a thought. That it is "clue" or "klue", it is still the same concept.

    Quote

In addition English has many words pronounced the same but spelled differently with no differentiation through tones possible, unlike Thai.  If all words that are pronounced the same had to be spelled the same, it would be difficult to figure which word was which in the written language.

That is a fair point, but the reverse is just as bad. Currently, one needs to remember which spellings must be used for which similarly pronounced word, or homonyms. There are many words (homographs) that have multiple meanings and this is not an issue. No one I know has any difficulty knowing that "bat" has several meanings. And while it could be a source of added confusion in terms of comprehension, instances of confusion are rare in spoken conversation. The context helps. And even in the worst case scenario, in writing with little context, most of these would be synonyms would be differentiated by their word function and location in a sentence: "That down is nice especially down on the bed."

Lastly, to be fair to me, there were many elements in my OP that were not conceded in your reply. At most levels, a more phonemic spelling system makes a lot of sense.

still, there are possible logistical issues that could make a reform difficult. It would not be impossible. It just would take intelligent human beings and leaders to have a long-term vision!

Back to the topic.  The Immigration Act is over 40 years old.  So Thai officials seem happy with using that long term fix.

True, but we all could argue it could use a little upgrade. The process has improved in 10 years though. There is still room for progress!

I wonder, to get back on topic, whether or not the BKK arrival terminal can accommodate more lines, more immigration officers. In my country, they have a passport scanner that, I figure, must help speed up arrivals as immigration officers, I guess, do not have to enter all the data in the system. Is it probably more efficient? Is it worth it? Is there room for those? Could that be part of a solution?

Thai officials always prefer temporary plans to comprehensive, long term ones. I suppose long-term plans are less sanuk less fun

Isn't that the pot calling the kettle black? The English spelling system has not been upgraded in 250 years and this laissez-faire has cost, is costing, and will cause delayed learning to read and spell by at least 3 years (by billions of native-speakers of all Commonwealth countries and the USA and non-native speakers). This lack of long-term planning by the British has cost and is costing a lot more money, if one wants to have a well-educated, competitive workforce. There are twice as many dyslexics in English-speaking countries (including a lot of students who struggle to learn to read and spell) as there are in languages that have a more regular and friendly system. ThIs lack of long-term planning means also that the learning of far more important subjects like ethics, financial literacy,... assuming that the elite desires this for its subjects will not be done. Pedagogies are and have been of the teacher-led kind, something that most gurus find an absolute horror as activities that stress rote memorization of (stupid and irregular) spellings. This lack of planning also has prevented and prevents social mobility on a grand scale, favouring the wealthy and the educated. Finally, most of us know how hard it is for someone to learn to pronounce words if one is not a native-speaker of English, especially so considering the absurdly high number of accents. Is it hard for you to find a Thai GF who can speak more than snake-snake fish-fish, one that one can have a monologue with? Considering English is a lingua franca the number of people affected is about 2 to 3 billion people. On the other hand, there are plenty of websites offering temporary lessons and lots of excuses to explain the reason behind the lack of that comprehensive, long-term plan that should have been put in place a long time ago. And to think that many laughed and still laugh at (and obstruct in many ways) the Americans for attempting to upgrade the system. Btw, do Thais need to build a new airport for this temporary influx or will you complain about that long-term plan too? Maybe it is time to look at our problems and fixing them, as a way to show that we are really that much better. No? We can pretend and point or find a long-term fix. What will it be? Excuses?

If lady unwilling to process your request ask to speak with her supervisor and go up the chain if necessary.

The SWIFT code consists of either eight or 11 characters and is formatted as follows:

                                AAAA-BB-CC-DDD

    • The first 4 characters are the bank code (only letters);
    • The next 2 characters are the country code (only letters);
    • Next 2 characters are the location code (letters and digits);
    • The last 3 characters represent the branch code (letters and digits)

    Thanks,

    I agree.

I have used swift for years with zero issue as I stated in the into. This has caught me flat-footed. I also have money in Toronto Dominion, but they had changed their wiring protocol just before I left at the end of Dec. requiring a person to vouch for me. That was impossible to set up days before I sold my condo and was leaving. (I had gone at TD 2 years prior to set all this up and they assured me at the time that all is.) I tried to use my bank cards as a way to bring money in, but since I have been using them at all for years, there were issues, as I will explain.

I tried today to start using transferwise. It will take 3 days or so to see if the money is wired correctly. This will give me another method to wire.

I do not have any working bank cards. One of my oversea banking cards has expired and the other does not seem to work (I phoned to a rep yesterday and they assured me that it should be okay). Famous last word!

Anyway, it might be that Transferwise might be a better way to wire anyway. In some ways, I will have to thank the banksters for messing me up. It was a catalyst, I am not sure why the bank has suddenly chosen to make it hard for me to wire. As I have said, I have been a good member for 30 years with them! It could be that they saw the transferring of money (in small quantities) from my TD bank to them as suspicious.

I plan to bring this matter up the chain of command, of course.

Thanks for all of the help and support.

  11. 2 emails to and from Kasikorn (main branch) and both categorically explained that there is no such extra code (or that they do not need it).

    kasikorn.png.f844ed00c0948d72566ff600ae3ddf23.png

I have no idea what this is all about. I have dealt with this bank for decades and done transfers for years. It is as bizarre as it is odd.

I plan to talk to the head of the branch, then to above her if needed. I swear that if they do not agree to send this money I will take all of my money from them and sue them for the trip I will need to do to make that happen. I should be happy. I will have an all-expenses paid trip.

However, this PDF does not offer any additional information that I did not know or provided in the question. I do know the initial 8 or so characters. I am seeking the last 3. My bank is telling me they need more than that. Are they bullying me in the sense that they know I need this service. Maybe they are asking me to find something that is impossible. They seemed truthful in the correspondence though.

Thanks for the spelling info. I did not notice. Maybe my Google searching might be more successful now. LOL

  13. There is this idea that the people in charge in Thailand (monks or the other) that remaining calm is a virtue. Are humans emotionless creatures? Sociopaths are!

I find it ironic that the Thais would extol the virtue of being calm (quiet) when this is an issue about noise! Of course, the Thais would remain "calm". Are they being disturbed? Let me remind that they do not remain clam when lese majeste's rules are being raised! Let me remind me that they are plenty of evidence of Thais not staying clam, engaging in fights or being in them. Are all Thais behaving as saints? Of course, not.

Now, the added information about them being topless is a bit much to take. That they are drunk is of course important as alcohol is a drug. Thailand sells the drug, so they should pay the consequence. If these were women, okay, I would get it. but, men? I think Thais are trying to find an excuse for a behaviour that it not so "jaidee" (Making noise after a certain time).

That they are drunk is of course important as alcohol is a drug. Thailand sells the drug, so they should pay the consequence. People's emotional state change when they are drunk.

As to the people who claim that they should move to another country, that is odd. Half of these people would claim that the Saudis and the Talibans are backwards and should change their laws. The US govn't (but also other govnt's via NGOs and missionaries) are actively trying to change countries' cultures, economies, govn'ts,... No one bats an eye!

Thais (and others) should realize that evolved humans try to better themselves. Cultures, customs,... are arbitrary. They are many different iteration of what some people claim to be the perfect culture, the perfect laws, the perfect country, the perfect people.

Humans are not sociopaths. Humans have emotions. Thais do laugh when they are happy. Are they suggesting we do away with that emotion too? It seems to me it is false patriotism and racism: we, Thais, are better that foreigners. Really? While this is not a Thai concept as racism and patriotism are rampant in many countries, the "Go back to your country" line is getting old. People evolve. Making noise after 6 p.m. is not acceptable. Fess up!

  14. I am posting this again (from the bank forum) as I did not get any helpful answer for this topic. It is my hope that by asking the question here I will get an answer that could help others.

I am transferring some money from a credit union in Canada to Kasikorn. I have done this many times in the past, but they have changed procedures. Joy!

Now the credit union is asking me to provide them with a swift code for a corresponding bank (the banker and I were able to narrow it down to Nova Scotia using some PDF I found online*), but the NOSCCATT code (she tells me) IS missing 3 letters at the end. I am asked to contact "Kasikorn bank".

Does anyone know anything about this (new) procedure? What are the 3 letters missing?

I am told that TD is also used as a corresponding bank, btw.

I am not really sure what your problem was.

You mentioned a 500 baht a day fine which for overstaying your permit to stay. The normal fine for late 90 day report is 2000 baht. The max fine for being late or not doing 90 day reports is 5000 baht.

Only the first extension of stay application is considered as doing a 90 day report. The first report is due 90 days from the date you apply for the extension. Looking at your stamps it appears your 90 day report was due on September 5th.

So, the issue is that I assumed that the extension would start at the same time that my visa expired. It doesn't. As you state, they construe that it starts as you stated. How can one make a procedure more contrived? Really? I visited that office one more time one month later than the June date. Why make it easy on people, hey?

Now, I should be fair. There are 3 ways to report and there is a large window from which one can do it.

NO ONE mentioned anything about the procedures and the timeline when I applied, when I received the permit. NO ONE! Yes, on the back of my passport there is a paper stapled (easy to miss if one does not know) saying that I must "notify". HOW? No information on how.

One must go to TV and ask several questions to get to the bottom of the procedures.

When I ask the precise information on how one must notify to be pinned, no one does it.

No system is perfect I realize that. I think it would be nice if there was a nice slip of paper inserted in the passport, indicating the 3 different ways to notify and the details for all of them?

Why is this made so complicated? Yes, they have laws, but laws can be changed. Laws are arbitrary. There are bad and stupid laws.

The next progress would be to align all of those dates so that the first 90 days extension is actually 90 days from the end of the visa. (It can be 80 days long when one applies online! Cheating us of 10 days is okay?)  True, they do have that grace period whereby we are allowed to do it by going there and do it up to 7 days "late". Ah! You see! It can be done "late".

Anyway, I don't foresee anyone changing the ways. Too many people are taking a cut. The para-legal company that scared my wife telling her that an extension of a marriage visa would be hard benefit and almost got me to pay up. (As a person with a sufficient pension to qualify, it was easy. Apart from the absurd amount of paper work and copies (Thailand 4.0?) and a visit to the office with a witness vouching that our marriage was legit, going there one more time to get the approval,... it was easy.) Making these procedures complicated drive people to come back to TV too.  I am sure that there are a few people missing a few steps too which allows the imm. department to pay for whatever is needed that year. There are possible reasons why the procedure is so opaque.

How hard is it to have ONE simple pin topic explaining clearly what the procedure entails with all the fine print and details indicated there?

Why can't people understand that if there are many people screwing up (not sure what the stats are), it could be their fault too? Why is this mindset that it is always the person who screws up who is wrong? Of course, we would not want ANYONE to lose face! ANYONE?

Finally, I am sure that these kinds of systemic issues are prevalent in the West too. Who wants to complain when a permission to stay is on the line? As a result, systems do not improve. No oversight. No ombudsperson.

The procedure --once it is delineated-- is not that hard to follow, btw. It is a bit contrived with the dual date issue. I appreciated and admire the grace period though. The procedure could be a few paragraphs long with a few post scriptums for odd regional or local cases. The local offices could print this at the same time they approve matters. I have seen this on TV, buried somewhere.

So any chance of one nicely pinned post where it should be with a nice helpful title in capital letters like 90 days extension procedure? I have seen it somewhere. I did not have a chance to look at it and see if it is comprehensive, but ... it will be more helpful than having to read 270 pages or more to get to the bottom of this.

  16. Thanks to all for all of the great feedback.

Yes, Jdietz, I suspect that there have been changes and now they require that info to do transfers.

So, it looks like it would be an advantage to get my Kasikorn branch swift code too, according to Thailand J. Now, wish me luck trying to ask for that to a local branch. Can one use the transit number in lieu of the terminal swift code? I know the transit number is the first 3 numbers of my bank account. On an old form they recommended the banker to use that transit code. But I will try to find the XXX branch swift code, just in case.

As to the Nova Scotia code, it is a mystery as to why the Canadian banker would ask me (or a Thai bank, for that matter), but maybe they are too lazy to look it up!

(They're missing the branch code, XXX is main branch)

    Thanks a lot.

But, this is very strange, it seems, as I have not had to do this for at least 3 years. I guess they are changing their procedures.

But, if XXX is the 3 letters missing, the banker would know not to ask such a stupid question. Right? She is just asking me to give me the next 3 letters for the bank of Nova Scotia. She does not seem to care for the Chiang Mai branch. Very strange!

Additionally, can you explain as to why the banker in Canada is asking me to find out which is the code for bank of nova scotia used to transfer the funds (AKA the corresponding  bank/branch they use). Is that something that Kasikorn would know? My branch?
