  1. I know there is a sticky above regarding hotels under 1000 bht but I am interested in hearing from those who might have a favorite.

I stayed at the Century Park Hotel recently and although it was nice, I was paying around 3000 bht a night. I'm looking for something in the same area or maybe on Sukhumvit down towards MBK with access to the sky train. I am planning on coming back to BKK the end of the year or beginning of next year...either before the Christmas holidays or afterwards.

    Any input would be appreciated

  2. What does the OP mean by "those membership fees"?

Does he mean buying the lady a drink or two, taking her to dinner a couple of times, going to the movies etc?

Or does he mean membership fees for those highly respectable :o VIP lounges and karaoke places.

Or does he mean bar fines? :D

I think he's talking about dating agency membership fees.

  3. Wish I remembered which place me and my girlfriend ate at while I was there last Sunday. It was an open type "restaurant" with little wood tables and plastic stools to sit on. It was a buffet type set-up which you cooked on the little table fire grill. Was all you can eat and was very inexpensive.

There are a lot of those around. Prices from 79 to 99 baht per person. My favorite is for 99 Baht near the corner of Asoke and Petchburi.

However, these ones aren't really bona fide Korean restaurants with Korean food... they're more like Thai restaurants with Korean "style" of cooking (by merely adapting that Korean charcoal grill on table thing).

You are probably right about that...was still pretty good for Thai food cooked Korean.

  4. I see many EHS jobs posted on a certain thai website. I'd like to know what there exact definition of EHS is though. Locking out equipment when you are working on it is common practice, I can't see where it wouldn't be a practice there too. Perhaps it was and the worker(s) decided to cut corners...no pun intended.

  5. Lately, I'm a bit dissapointed by the ugly fashion trends that seem to haunt Bangkok malls. I can't seem to find a shirt that I like and I remembered the "Abercrombie" shops from when i was in the US. I haven't seen any of them in Bangkok at all ..does anyone know if there's one somewhere?

    No Abercrpmbie shops in Thailand

Perhaps not, but there must be Abercrombie clothes available...authentic or not. My girlfriend bought me an AC polo when I was over there last week. It sure looked authentic to me. I will ask her later where she got it.

  7. What does puzzle/concern me is that after a very spicy dinner, I "cleanse" myself very well the next day at the toilet BUT... my stool is a lot darker than usual.

Is that a sign of stomach bleeding?

(maybe the chilli burns small wounds or something?)

But the next day, stool color is back to normal... :o

Peppers do not cause ulcers. Capsaicin inhibits acid formation in the stomach.

  8. Drew, I feel your pain. I was lucky from Minneapolis to Tokyo, I took a 747 where the leg room wasn't bad. From Tokyo to Bangkok it was the 330. It wasn't bad flying there as no one was in the seat next to me so I could stretch out. Flight out was very cramped. It was only about a 5 hour flight on the 330 for me.

  9. I just read where mangosteen are only available to be grown in Hawaii, but aren't imported to the mainland. Not sure if that is true, but perhaps since I have found absolutely no sign they are available here on the mainland.

I know you can get the juice. How's that? Does it pale in comparison?

One day while I was there I bought a little over a kilo and ate them all myself...that was one sitting. It wasn't enough.

  10. If this post doesn't belong here, moderators please feel free to move...

When I was in Thailand, I fell in love with mangosteen. I could not get enough of them. Does anyone know if this fruit is exported much? I'm living in the States but haven't been able to find any information on it as far as being grown here. Thought possibly Florida but perhaps it is still too cool there in the winters for it?

  11. I work with a guy from Malayasia (late twenties) who has a largish English GF, last year he took three weeks hush hush sick leave, on his return it leaked out that the cause was a broken penis. During a heavy session of reverse cowboy, she bounced a little too hard and out of phase, he said there was a little pop! ...and then a hel_l of a lot of pain.

Short hospital stay and three months of ZERO penial activity, and he's back in the saddle.

I suggested retiring his GF, "....no I like 'em big 'n' white looking!"

Three months? He must have been given something to keep depress arousal. :o

  12. Definitely invest in the travel containers you now pick up just about anywhere. They are 100mL so they are perfect for shampoo etc. You can also get shaving cream, deoderant, cologne etc in "travel sizes." Depending on how long you are staying, these should last a good week. Trying to get everything in to a quart size bag can be an ordeal though.

  13. The tuk tuk drivers all know the best tailors and will drive you there. Afterwards, they'll set you up with some nice jewelry too at one of the numerous jewelry shops. :o

On a more serious note, I heard there are good tailors in Hong Kong. Cheap prices and good craftsmanship. Anyone else validate?

  14. Thanks Crouton...

Yes, I had looked at that website as well. The price on the website you posted is about $130 more than a consolidator I was talking to in Chicago. I'm still going to contact this other place and see what they have to say, but I can't see their price being close to $400 less than everyone else.

  15. Organic matter is alway one of the best ways to loosen up clay soils. I use good sieved black dirt (rotten manure). I also like to add a fair amount of sieved sand. If you can't get hold of good organic matter for the time being, sand is probably your best choice. I don't use a specific recipe as I have a large garden and bring in sand etc by the pickup load. I know the combination is about right when you can take the soil, roll it in to a ball and then press it. If it crumbles, it's right. If it just flattens and stays together, the clay content is still too high.

  16. Terry,

Do you remember if you were able to accumulate frequent flyer miles with these types of discounted tickets? I know that in some cases you can, other times not. I'll probably give them a call soon. I just hope it's not a bait and switch.
