  1. Thai postal system sucks, nearly every Birthday / Xmas card i send gets interfered with or lost.

DHL works 100% everytime. Just be careful sending stuff out of Thailand to UK, that you don't get charged import duty / tax. Helps to mark it as second-hand goods, or low value--under £25 i recall.

  2. No test required in Pattaya if you have an IDP except for the three small tests in the office which are, depth perception, reaction test and colour test all done in 2 mins.

You will need a medical certificate despite some reports to the contrary, these can be obtained from any doctors surgery for around 100baht, you will also need a certificate of residence (Jomtien Immigration 200baht) or a work permit. Dont forget some pics, two for each licence and copies of your passport, main page, visa page etc.

Take a pen and if you can someone thta speaks Thai, around mid afternoon it gets quiet early mornings are normally mahem! I think thats it.

JohnC is spot on here. Got my Car & Motorbike license 2 weeks. Only mistake i made was arriving about 11am, the whole thing took 5 hours because they stopped for lunch at 12:15 for 45min plus to eat. A lot of thai's and foreigners were queuing up without the right paperwork.

I failed the depth test first, young Thai lady said one more time or i would have to come back tomorrow. Luckily i passed.

Since then i have used the Thai licence as ID in the banks, rather than my passport. They were fine with this.

  3. Probably not a bad thing. Soi Bukhao is incredibly business these days, i have nearly ben run over a few times myself!. If the occasional prescence of PC Plod slows things down a bit, and gets rid of some of the idiots driving about i welcome it. I suspect a lot of motorbikes/scooters are rented to people who don't hold a bike licence in their own country.

  4. I normally pay 1200 baht from departures upstairs, just hop into the first empty cab that stares at you. Journey from new airport takes approx 90 mins, and is nearly all on the motorway.

Leaving Pattaya going back to airport seems to cost 800-900 baht !!!

  5. I don't think its a Thai problem but i find Real Estate agents distasteful and insincere everywhere i travel or do business. Making the sale is always more important than helping their customers or building long-term relationships.

I see some websites advertising re-sales of VT6 units in Pattaya under foreign ownership !! Sounds good doesn't it BUT the chenods won't be prepared by the land office for maybe another 6 months yet, and it is just a lottery which 49% get allocated to buyers !!!

You know when you step out on your driveway early in the morning and you hear a crunching sound-you've trodden on a slug-that's where i put most property agents, as slime under my shoes.

  6. i think the decision to buy or own in Pattaya is very an individual one, but as a general rule i wouldn't tie up more money in Thailand than i could walk away. I would want to have enough money to still be solvent in my own country (England) or start again somewhere in Asia.

one comment i would make is that the websites of property agents are full of a lot of out of date listings that are not available, not updated

or just generic listings to make the agency look bigger.

further the prices listed are not representative always of what places are actually sold for. In UK there are free websites where you can check via postcodes what the genuine selling prices, not wishful pipe-dreams some owners hold on to !
