I don't believe so.....
I always thought his nickname stemmed from 'jok', ie rice porridge, the stuff available at breakfast in some hotels. The 'joke' moniker being just Westerners getting things wrong, as they often do.
But he was head of immigration, the lit that interact with foreigners.

If Thammanat can bribe, threaten and worm his way into power he will make make it his lifes work to see the current mob imprisoned or forced into exile.
He should just about manage this before the inevitable coup to unseat him comes around.
Got rid of them all at once.
Best thing might be him winning because he will cause enough damge in the short term.

This article looks like it was written by a 5year old.
Lots of over the top gushing praise. Really quite pathetic really.

I wholly agree. A lot of expats have helped out during Covid, and their efforts (as far as I know) have not been recognised by the authorities/Government.
Also, and I know it is trivial by comparison, but a lot of the voluntary work carried out in this country by expats/farangs like cleaning beaches etc is laughed at by the Thais who consider it below them to do such menial tasks. - "Aliens cleaning beaches - whatever next?"
The Government should be actively encouraging people to take pride in their country ("Amazing Thailand?") but seem to be more interested in looking after their own interests. I am not saying that this situation is unique to Thailand, but surely in order to encourage tourists to visit here (which I believe is a Government priority?) one of the first things to do is to make it a more attractive place to visit, and not depend on ex pat/farang volunteers to be doing the job - clean beaches being a prime example. I have heard (no links, sorry) that in some cases voluntary workers have been told that they should have a work permit to carry out the work that they are doing - ridiculous!
Thailand has opened the gates to tourism by dropping most Covid restrictions - how about making the place "cleaner" instead of recommending double pricing and more for tourist "attractions"?
At thats exactly why rich, high end tourists won't come here.
Thai people have lower standards of what they require when they travel so dont notice a bit of filth here and there. Or a few mangy dogs, broken paths, hanging cables, street hookers, blah blah blah.....you get the idea.

I remember following this rescue effort when it happened and thinking it likely they would not be able to pull it off. But they did it. Very inspiring and heroic story. A great role-model representation not only as how to act in a crisis but as members of the expat community acting with valor in their host country. These aren't the only expats who stepped up when needed also. Not to detract from John and Ricks actions but there were a group of expats who really acted during the pandemic to help those hard hit by the economic impacts, especially Olivier Gachoud of Switzerland and Jean-Pierre Barbier of France. They organized 19 straight months of food aid distribution to the homeless and impoverished (including expats) affected by the economic downturn, providing over 56,000 meals at a cost of over 1 million THB, the majority of it funded personally and solely by Mr. Gachoud. I highly encourage Aseannow to post a story about these folks. Read about their efforts here: https://thepattayanews.com/2021/11/14/an-interview-with-olivier-gachoud-after-roughly-19-months-of-helping-the-needy-during-covid-19-crisis-in-pattaya/ Salutes.
I read a very short article about these guys a while ago and thought just how kind and generous they were.
But will they get any recognition from the thai authorities for their efforts? Probably not. Still have to pay double prices and forced to do 90 dsy reports. Sad that the thai government can't say thank you to a foreigner.

But you do barfine girls then?

Oh well, it justifies a bigger budget for the military.
"You see, we could have been attacked so we need more weapons"
All seems a bit staged.

Record for the most embarrassingly pathetic PR stunts in the world.
Closely followed by military coups.

So now Thailand will be claiming to be the hub of sporting achievement.

However he stated the comment it shows how out of touch he is and even considers Thailand has so much relevance on the global stage that the world world even entertain Thai language as a second method of communication.
It's the "Thailand is the centre of the universe" mentality.

Standard political rhetoric.
But thailand, who has no real experience on the international stage will take this at face value and trumpet it as America loves us so much more than anyone else.

Oh please give it a rest with all this hub nonsense.
The world is laughing at you with your silly grandiose statements.
Why not just be good at something? Why does it always have to be a hub?

Now other countries are recognising Thailand as a hub of something.
When will they realise that other countries are just patting them on the back the same way you would do a kid who ate all his veggies.
Strange people, always looking for validation.

And how, exactly, will Prayut be able to promote a thai restaurant in America.
Does he have an international audience just waiting for his wise words and advice.

Why is TH not entitled to do the same?
Because we all know Australia doesnt have double pricing, taxi scams and corrupt police.
From the moment you arrive in Thailand they are trying to steal from you.
Australia offers a certain amount of protection and safety.

Please, stop it.
You're becoming more ridiculous by the day.
Isnthis an example of what they consider Thainess?
A stinky fruit?
Go beg some more vaccines and medicine.......thats how the world see's them.

They harp on about how clear they were to never be colonised but can't feed themselves without the foreign dollar.
Meanwhile, Singapore, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia are all up and running nicely.
Well done Thailand

3 hours ago, BritManToo said:I was always taught Thai language insists the correct honorific should be added before addressing another human being. Something not required if addressing or calling a dog.
So in Thai language calling a person 'farang' would be rude.
But calling a person 'khun farang', 'lung farang', 'pee farang', etc would be polite.
When a Thai person calls me 'farang', by the rules of their own culture, they are being rude. And I treat them as such.
When a non-Thai calls me 'farang', they are being stupid, as I speak English, and they usually speak English too.
Excellent explanation.
Very well put.
