  1. Expecting Thai drivers to stay stopped after the pedestrians have crossed is hopeless.

However, as in Chiang Mai and in the pedestrian crossings at Khao San Road, they will stop (usually) with a red light and when they see a pedestrian in the zebra area. That's a great thing compared to what it used to be like trying to cross.

I doubt that its very much more dangerous now for tourists who don't understand the system than it was when they were trying to cross a busy street with no light.

  2. BTW I ovelook the on Nut extension and have seen no work, or even anybody on the track or the nearest station, for at least 9 months.

Actually the OP mentionned briefly the reason: some equipment for the extension is yet to be delivered because the guy responsible for the procurement was about to retire and too afraid to sign any purchase order. It seems this kind of equipment needs more than a year to be delivered and they realized it was missing only when they were supposed to install it.

So, now, they're just waiting for the delivery. Then they will have to install, test, and finally open. Seems it's going to be some time in 2011

It's amazing to me how many people believe that is the real reason it is not open yet. I don't know the real reason, but I'm pretty sure that the one put out for public consumption by the powers that be is not anywhere close to accurate!

  3. In Chiang Mai and several areas in Bangkok with pedestrian crossing lights the cars almost always stop when a pedestrian is crossing. I think that's a hel_l of a lot better than before the lights were there. It's still screwed up and dangerous, but I appreciate the effort (whatever is motivating it)!

  4. Any suggestions for a quality shoe repairer? No real luck with the street vendors on my Eccos (Rama 2 is a bit too far for me) and the guy I talked to in the shop in the basement of Robinsons at Asoke didn't inspire confidence. I hadn't really thought they could be repaired but now I have hope....

  5. Change the system locale to English...

Control Panel >> Regional and Language Options.

Actually you must go to Regional and Language Options then to Advanced and then change Language for non Unicode programs to English.

I know because it took me a frustrating hour to figure it out with my printer.

  6. I just remembered that Ecco offered me 50 percent off a new pair made in Thailand or 40 percent off of an imported pair. Since they were on sale at the time it wasn't much of a discount.... Here is the letter I sent them (I've got time on my hands :):

    Dear Kuhn _______ ,

Thanks for your reply to my email and kind of offer of a discount on a new pair of Ecco shoes.

After reading your email, I googled ecco business comfort hydrolosys . I now can easily understand the difficulty Ecco must have dealing with so many complaints and problems especially given the many international divisions and the complexities of unified corporate communication that accompanies Ecco's business structure.

    http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&aq=8h&oq=&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4ADFA_enTH363TH363&q=ecco+business+comfort++hydrolosys

I also discovered that the first google result displayed included a comment from someone who said that they worked for Ecco talking specifically about my shoes. "As a final note, I have seen complaints about soles splitting, or cracking down the forefoot (horizontally) and would like to clarify on this as well, as far as I know it was a defect on one shoe called the Business Comfort."

My pair of Business Comfort shoes did remain attractive, comfortable, and functional beyond the one year product warranty period. I understand why Ecco considers the splitting of the soles after the one year warranty period to be a result of normal wear. However, I expected more from Ecco based on your advertising, projection of quality and my previous experiences. I'm dissapointed, but I sadly accept that that's life at the morally confused intersection of corporate marketing and consumer desire.

I did stop by Central Chidlom yesterday evening and saw that Ecco shoes are, as usual, discounted 20 percent. Is your offer of a special discount of 40% or 50% off of the discounted price. If so, I wll buy another pair and see how it goes :)

Thank you for your kind attention to my concerns!

  7. Excellent!!!!!

The soles of my 5200 baht Ecco shoes purchased in Thailand split and cracked. They were out of the one year warranty period and Ecco Thailand said they couldn't be repaired and offered me a 20 percent discount on another pair.

I learned everything I needed to know about Ecco's comittment to quality and customer care by googling "Ecco soles". Try it!

Unfortunatly they are\were my favorite brand of shoes!

I will take them to your guy and see what happens.

  8. I live at a condo on Rajadamri next to the Four Seasons Hotel, a short walk from Rajadamri BTS station, that has a squash court and I am looking for people to play with. The court is free and is OK (could use paint and a clean-up)with AC (that doesn't always work very well). There is a changing room with showers and lockers. I'm probably at a low intermediate/high beginner level.

Please send a message with your phone number and I'll give you a call.

    Rick

  9. I confess that I am a chilpolte addict and the only way that I have found them is thru amazon.com, where they have several types.......some sold in bulk at $7-$8/lb. A lb of dried peppers goes a long way. To get them, I have friends or relatives bring over or re ship to me. I've never had them sent direct......but they do ship international.

What i love about chilpoltes is that they have a nice smokey flavor......not like the Thai peppers that are just blazing hot and deaden your tongue for any other flavors.

Cheap, Good, and he will deliver!

  10. Hi Carl,

I moved back a couple of months ago, but I haven't been able to get the idiots to fix the lights. Hopefully it will be fixed shortly. Give me a call as I no longer have your number.

  11. www.healthfoodthailand.com

Overpriced for me on many items, but maybe there is a demand for the convenience. I wonder if people that live in Thailand will pay 450 baht for a kilo of chick peas or double the retail price for Don's Mexican food products when they can go to Tops or Villa? Maybe if they live in Nakorn Nowhere....

  12. I asked the manager why they were stopping selling lifetime memberships and was told that the government was requiring them to stop. The reason why the agency was requiring them to stop selling lifetime memberships went unspoken, but was pretty obviously a legitimate concern of the risk of permanently shutting the doors. In Korea, I have heard, they continued selling lifetime memberships up until the day of closure.

  13. Bun! So good.

For example, a bowl of cool dry rice vermicilli topped with a bunch of stuff (for example vegetables, roasted chicken, roast pork, Viet eggrolls), served with a bowl of fish sauce on the sauce. I always mix in the sriracha and hoisin in the bowl (but generally in Thailand they don't offer the hoisin).

Where can I get Bun in Bangkok??????

When I'm in Pattaya there is a place in Central that does it great for 79 baht. I have tried many Vietnamese restaurants in Bangkok, but they never have it. Went all the way to Ari last week to try a place I heard of, they had some wierded up version with not enough noodles.....
