  1. For minor medical conditions/treatments use the Pattaya Memorial Hospital; I have always been happy with their service. The prices will be better than BPH.

    Now I am confused.

From past threads on this subject I got the impression that BPH was an ok hospital but with high prices, Pattaya Memorial was a dangerous place to go, and Pattaya International was a good middle ground hospital.

Am I on the right track?

  2. I was involved in a 9-vehicle pileup on the motorway last night coming to Bangkok from Hua Hin. We were car #5, in the middle, as it were. All the cars were scrunched into each other. Mercifully no one was injured. But the police, ambulances, and all sorts of others wearing fluorescent vests suddenly apeared, some jumping over the median of the motorway and crossing oncoming traffic. There was much palaver about who was at fault. I was so relieved that my Thai friend was driving my car; the accident was unavoidable but I had the definite feeling that as the only farang present that fault would probably been laid at my door. As it was, the insurance companies worked out some sort of a deal between themselves, we spent about two hours at the local police station and were let go. I really wonder what might have happened if I had been alone as my Thai is minimal. Nobody seemed to speak a word of English including the insurance investigators. But I did notice--as did my friend--the police and others looking my way many times. And he (my friend) was asked several times " Are you sure the farang wasn't driving?"

  3. Hi,

I had a colonoscopy yesterday at St. Louis Hospital in Bangkok for a total of 13,417 baht.

No pain, completely sedated and very quick full recovery of consciousness.

This included the removal and biopsies of 4 polyps that were found.

I also came away with a full report and colour photographs for my GP in farangland.

  4. What forum is best? We try to include GLBT issues here, but almost all ladyboy or 3rd gender discussions seem to revolve around the minority of LB's who rent their organs to straight men. Sports? Bikes in Thailand? Politics? Pets?

General Topics would be an appropriate parking place for this thread.

  5. i am 72 had a replacement done at above hosp last year.riding motorbike 3 wks later.why get a patch when you can solve the problem with a fairly uncomplcated procedure.good luck (cost now is about $1,500)

LOL I had one done about 12 years ago in California and the hospital billed the insurance company over $65,000. Wonder what it would cost there now?

  6. I'm rather sorry I invested in a granite countertop. It is a beautiful dark green but recently we squeezed one lemon in the juicer and some of the lemon spray hit the countertop. It is now etched and ugly. We have tried all kinds of compounds, some of them quite expensive, one imported from Italy, to no avail.

  7. And what does washing hands mean? For the few males I notice who "wash" their hands in public toilets it means simply running them under the water and shaking off the excess moisture. Of course there are no paper towels available. Soap may help but it is the SCRUBBING motion that removes the germs and bacteria. Even without soap, scrubbing of one hand against the other, back and front, and between the fingers is what is meant by hand washing in these circumstances.

  8. BTW, I tried one of their "Flamethrower grill" burgers which are supposedly a higher end fast food burger. I had never tried DQ Grill and Chill in the states, but ...

-- bun was smaller than US standard, patty was smaller than US standard

-- the bacon on it was tiny, not crisp

-- the soft drink in the set was very small

-- there was an initial taste of the grill but I don't know if it is a real grill taste or some kind of chemical they add (as I suspect)

-- the fries were very boring, not too greasy though

-- they offer the option of onion rings instead of the fries, probably worth a try as the fries are nothing special

Cost of the set, Flamethrower burger, fries, and drink , 129 baht (I think)

    No rush to go back.

BTW we are getting off topic, but suggest you try the same at DQ Grill and Chill at Siam Centre in Bkk if you're around there. Yes, substitute the onion rings for french fries. Also they have UNLIMITED refills on the soft drinks which I thought was against the law in Thailand.

  9. The Fourth of July party I am attending tomorrow is featuring CHILES RELLENO! How's that for an American celebratory meal?!

Before anyone asks, the chiles were grown here from seeds brought from California.

  10. It never ceases to amaze me..........You come to Thailand ,they have such a varied selection of good tasty food & all you can talk about are burgers.....Some sad characters about, thats for sure.

NEWSFLASH - Many people on this forum have been in Thailand for years, some even decades. Most people enjoy eating a wide variety of food. I love Thai food but I do not want to eat it 3 times a day, 365 days a year.

Agreed! I have lived in Bangkok since December 1999. Though I eat Thai food most of the time I sometimes even order a Mac.

........and some of us are here in spite of the local food, not because of it

  11. Emporium has one as well.

But if you see a Yamazaki shop elsewhere, it's the same - a slightly different selection of products but I think the breads will be mostly the same.

I find Yamazaki bread as good as any bread here, but why do they have to cut the slices so thick???

    :):D:D

It's the thick slices that I like! Just eat one slice instead of two! I like to put a huge slab of Emmatal cheese and raspberry jam between two slices and then toast lightly in butter .............yummmmmm

  12. Didn't realize they used to have Carl's Jr, wish they were still here. I'd go for their bacon western cheeseburger with curly fries over any burger I've ever had in Thailand.

But the Thai beef would spoil it no matter how much bacon is loaded on. Now if they used Aussie beef, that's another story and another price range.

  13. I have many Asian friends in China, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong and Singapore. Almost all of them were planning to travel to Thailand this year but virtually all of them--at least a dozen by my recollection--have changed plans, and each has said it was because of the political unrest. The airport disgrace was bad enough but it was the lack of concern for the safety of the international leaders meeting in Pattaya that made the big news across Asia. The photos of Asian leaders being evacuated by helicopter or fleeing down the roads in their cars made a huge and long-lasting impression.

As a Hong Kong friend said to me last night, "Thailand is just too dangerous". Whether you agree or not, this is the word on the street across Asian countries.

  14. I have been to Pattaya twice in the last month visiting friends, in fact I arrived home yesterday from Pattaya, so thats about up to date as I can be.

It was like being in some sort of Hollywood B movie, day of the living dead, surreal is the only way to describe it.

About 90% of the farang I saw must have been at least 60, I assume these are coffin dodgers who chose to retire there.

Quite comical to watch these people at breakfast as there teerak talks on the phone to her husband.

Somehting else struck me, has a beauty tax been introduced, or have bar fines been reduced for ugly women?

I have never seen so many ugly, overweight, past their sell by date women hanging on the arms of their latest faern.

    Where are the pretty women?

Pattaya dead, dont know if rigour mortis has set in just yet, but its certainly in terminal decline.

Waza, I was in Adelaide earlier this year, from what I saw, why bother going to Thailand, Australia offers better value for money, plenty of Asian women available.

Its not only I who feel this way, my brother lives in Adelaide and has visited Thailand many times, he said to me he can have a better time up the Gold Coast and all thats on offer there, and doesnt have to put up with all that travelling to Thailand entails, with he would spend on airfare he can get accommodation, beer and spirits better quality and cheaper than Thailand, <deleted>, there is something wrong when a Thai lady is cheaper in Australia than Thailand.

    Why bother coming here?

why bother indeed ,glad you wont be back.

I have been on two months' sabbatical from Bangkok and Pattaya in California. I am ready to come back and I am DELIGHTED to hear that the streets are dead. It sounds like a pleasant change to me.

  15. I know another foreigner who has been offered taxi money going home from an encounter.

Rather than generosity, smacks to me of being just a very clever Thai who wants to distance himself from the money-boy crowd. Nothing wrong with that.

Absolutely right TT. When my bf and I got together 5 years ago he would always distance himself from me on the skytrain or when walking down the street in Silom so as not to appear to be 'together' with an older farang. This was his custom for the fist year or so but no longer. He is well educated and self supporting and pays a share of our common expenses as well as offering me gifts from time to time, the latest being a Georgio Armani wristwatch (well of course it isn't the genuine article but it is a step up from those one sees on the footpaths of Patpong!).

  16. A male Thai acquaintance of mine has 8 inch nailes on his left hand. He's a handsome guy, dresses well and otherwise appears to be a normal upscale Thai guy. He is something of a celebrity chef and travels the world teaching Thai cooking at hotels, schools and privately. He explained that he had the long nails on his left hand because of safety when slicing and dicing.

I could only think of all the food goo that would collect in those claws.
