  1. Nine years ago they had no electric buses, let alone a card system for them. I got as far as this about Hop cards from a press release last December: "In the first package, passengers pay only 50 baht per day and can ride electric buses and boats of operators using Thai Smile Bus platform with unlimited trips. In the second package, commuters pay 40 baht a day to ride electric buses in the Thai Smile Bus network in over 120 routes in Bangkok with unlimited trips." But as for actually finding the card, let alone "120 routes" run by TSB (as opposed to BMTA), I got no further.
  2. Jumped on a bus today which had no conductor/ess. A couple of people who got on asked the driver and bought some form of card, one person also boarded and swiped a card (3 others, like me, did nothing). I believe this is a "HOP" card, but I can only find Thai references to it that are nonsense when translated, although one site suggested it might be for 40-baht-per-day unlimited travel, which hardly makes sense if I am making a single journey (which I more usually make on a 8-baht non-aircon). Another clearly referred to using Krungthai bank for purchase, which won't work for me. Anybody shed light?
  3. Just underlines what I have said and you failed to understand: if I vote no I am branded as a racist. You need to get out more, or eat fresh fruit or something.
  4. how about Lidia Thorpe, a first-nations federal senator with whose views I otherwise disagree? https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-06-20/lidia-thorpe-will-back-no-campaign-against-indigenous-voice-/102500592 Or Warren Mundine AO, also inconveniently (for you) blackfella: https://www.theaustralian.com.au/nation/indigenous/opponents-to-an-indigenous-voice-to-parliament-concede-their-campaign-is-low-key/news-story/472199474b5ca36a36922166e69a2dd2
  5. "Vague" is precisely what the referendum proposal is. And that is why I will vote 'no'. Weeks out from the vote itself I am totally fed up with the propaganda that 'everyone voting no is a racist'. I want some progress for the [insert you own term for first nations - the ones I know in our local are happy with 'blackfella' but that's not PC enough]. This "Voice" gives no promise of progress, only more consultation about grievances. It's kicking the issue into the long grass, amplified by Albanese's threat not to visit the issue again for a generation if the vote goes against him (and his instant rent-a-rant when Dutton said he would do it again). He has already shot himself in the foot by allowing the vote to be politicised, with each side getting massive funding. A referendum is not for win or lose, it's to establish what the voters think on an issue. I lived in South Africa through the times of the TRC - truth and reconciliation commission so wonderfully led by Des Tutu. Not saying it's appropriate for Oz, but at least it was something that helped. This Voice will do nothing whatever for the people it is intended for, only display a hypocritical self-satisfaction for some whites* if it's a 'yes'. * not much has been said about the millions of Australian citizens of, eg Vietnamese, Indian, Greek, Italian origin, for whom this must be a puzzle. After all, this First Nations stuff has nothing to do with them. How should they vote?
  6. The OP's premise is nonsense. USD is NOT appreciating vs baht. Apart from that, it's fine......... as usual.
  7. Recommend BNH on Convent. I haven't had to go there for a couple of years but have had good service and a doc (can't remember her name) who evidently knew her job (and spoke good English).
  8. You sound like them! The only time I ever use a bank book is for Immigration on the annual extension. It's such a weird system and I have neer understood why Thais attach such mystic importance to it; likewise, when was the last time anyone actually did a "counter transaction"?
  9. Something wrong if the IO keeps your passport. Never leave their office without it.
  10. But who for? In almost 30 years I have never been required to show passport, EOS, 90-day, TM30 or any other doc - except when going to IO to renew same! Why do people get so wound up about this stuff? I had to get a new bank book last week and that caused a row because the passport had changed since the bank last saw it. This concept of changing a passport always throws Thai businesses for some reason, as if they don't do the same; bank gets more hot under the collar than Immigration ever does.
  11. I am given to understand de Gaulle was 1.96 and the US' Lincoln was 1.93. Otherwise most of the nasties are/have been short: Putin 1.70, Kim Jong Il 1.60, Hitler 1.73, Thatch 1.65. The guy in Iran is just 1.52. I have a good idea which end of the spectrum this latest Thai one is at……..
  12. Ability to laugh is not the same as a sense of humour, as the fabulous Rich Hall points out in his act.
  13. If you were brought up on the Goons, how could you forget?! And there must be kids out there, Americans, things like that, that have not got a clue what we are on about. I almost feel pity for them............
  14. .... and in the West they call them wildfires. Some posters questioning the validity of the OP's enquiry. Why? Only point I would make is that few outlets will want bodies of the age of most of these readers.
  15. while checking, I noted that an absent (presumably stoned or Fallen in the Water) Sellars was subbed by Valentine Dyall in one episode entitled "Who Is Pink Oboe?". Pleased as I am, it still takes my breath away that censors in those days could be so dim!
  16. sorry to be possibly pedantic, but surely "silly twisted boy" was Grytte-Pipe Thynne?
  17. at least he's sometimes funny, unlike some.........
  18. Definitely got barked at for not having it 2 years ago and made sure last year, so Madam will go to amphoe (yes, another poster,ANY amphoe) tomorrow just before we trek to that godawful empty mall in mid-nowhere! Luck of the draw, isn't it. Seems many on this thread can't see the difference between 22 and 2. It's the latter - or its update - we have been talking about.
  19. Rubbish. And there are more stories of cabbies returning cash than stealing it. They sure are not perfect but this is just unjustified muckraking nonsense.
