  1. Indian tourists urgently need an Indian-language version of AN (although it'd be tricky as they have so many languages) - so that emerging stories like this can be quickly disseminated.
  2. From the linked article: "the sale of the tickets between some 4,000 vendors, each of whom has a quota of 500 tickets per draw, and customers in exchange for a service fee of five baht per ticket." So, if the 4,000 vendors each took 500 tickets, at B5 per ticket, that's B10 million - each draw. A nice river-of-gold for the middle-man here.
  3. I hope the prince enjoys his trip ... and hope he's not going to be too offended by the "immodestly dressed" female players - they do tend to show a lot of leg.
  4. It's no skin off the PM's nose to keep businesses closed (or restricted) - as here they don't pay compensation to the affected businesses or to their (now unemployed) staff.
  5. I think differently. I'm grateful for this board and it's daily updates, reports and remarks. Even today I learned something new (with some horror) that the daily "test positivity rate" here is 41% ... Yikes!
  6. Just from today: motorcycle fuel subsidues, carbon-relevant rice-farming subsidies, proposed extension of local tourism subsidies ... there seems to be a lot of money around ... a lot of approved (and maybe not very well audited) budgets? ... I hope it's not for a final money-grab before the election?
  7. It makes sense (a new PM now): 1. an election is looming, and 2. polling may show that Prayut is now too much on the nose, ... so maybe it is time to put a new wolf in the sheep's clothes, and hope they can pull off a hat-trick: 1. Coup, 2. Election win (with senate on-side), 3. Rinse and repeat No. 2
  8. What exactly is strict surveillance - quaratine for anyone who has recently been in China? - closure of all parks where migrating birds are known to flock? ... it seems as if nothing has been learned. It looks like everything here is just "wait and see" (nothing pro-active) ... and if it's a disaster, then, oh well, "here we go again." Come on Thailand! Put your thinking hats on! Remember, the last disaster started like this:
  9. To answer the question posed in the headline: I'd need to know the total number of tests performed per day ... in addition to the number of new infections.
  10. ... they might also be counting transit passengers and over-nighting flight crew ... but, anyway, good luck to them. Troubling to read of the crowding and lack of social distancing ... it's as if nothing has been learned.
  11. Jemjan (the wife's friend that organised it) probably won't be acquitted this time ... but you never know ...
  12. 1. How are they to be attracted? Using what visa? 2. Yet, pre-pandemic, as I saw it, this group was actively forced out, by the powers that be, by the restrictions on repeat visas.
  13. ... and it also seems that the right proportion of the cream had not been sent upstairs.
  14. ... which, together with the 250 votes in the senate, and maybe enlisting some minor parties, will put them back in power ... same as before, is that right?
  15. I've never understood the popularity of, or the usefulness of, these predictions of future "tourist" numbers ... but if it's important to them, then carry on.
  16. That's a lot of fruit - over 2.5 million kilos (?) - no doubt too much for the train via Laos to handle.
  17. At least if you're at the restaurant you can send under-cooked meat back to the kitchen (which I've had to do all too often here) - not so with home delivery, as per the OP. But I never give the restaurant a second chance after that. Same happens here with pre-cooked foods like lasagne: all to often - burnt on the cornors, stone cold on the inside. But for the defamation laws, I could give a list of all the sins committed by all my nearby restaurants. In short, I mostly cook at home now.
  18. Good luck to them. Even if: - the election is fee and fair, and - the people do want change, it's still a big task, with the junta having a 250-vote head-start.
  19. 1. It's not clear how TAT defines "tourist" (as distinct from work visas, informal workers, digital nomads, retirees, family reunions, transit passengers, overnighting airline crew, etc.) 2. In the years before covid, so many were forced out by the restrictions placed on repeat-visas.
  20. Good luck to them, but this curse of mankind has proven, thus far, to be a very tough nut to crack.
  21. Good luck to them, but: 1. Will they sell anything other than a 28 inch waist? - I sure they won't have my size. 2. Isn't denim really just too hot and heavy for around here? 3. I think most Thais will prefer cheaper brands and "copies".
  22. 1. Falling asleep is also, seemingly, an accepted excuse to explain an accident - whatever may have been the cause. 2. For night-driving, I find many roads here have neither street lights nor reflectors (marking the lanes and shoulders) - leaving you to drive often in a near-black-void (other than what your headlights, or other traffic, may show up) ... giving your mind too little to concentrate and focus on.
  23. An acquired taste for sure - I never go near it. With it's raw vegetables, baby crab shells, etc, I'd just privately assumed that it must used as a purgative ... to ensure a firm stool the following day. ... you see, Thais are people too, and have the same concerns we do ... and just do things differently.
  24. Yep, he broke rule number one: don't get caught. Somehow I'm not surprised that someone charged with sorting out the lottery quota system is now alleged to be up to his neck in it himself.
  25. "Arrested for trespass" - very vague. Had yaba pills - who knows ... could have been planted on him, to tidy up the story after his death. Injured in a fall, prior to suicide ... I agree with the family - it stinks.
