  1. cheers everyone for your thoughts and suggestions... i do like the idea of the pavillion hotel in Kanch, we've stayed there before, also on a school camp. Although the close proximity of the river would probably mean that my fiance would head out for fishing only moments after he became my husband!! we might head over to kanchanaburi rent a car and just check out the options...

  2. hi all,

thanks for the replies, just catching up after a long weekend down in Krabi where I had to hit the computer cafe after every 16 photos I took!

Astral, I agree it would seem that I am left with a Memory Stick that I can't use... my older sister picked up on that while she was over and she managed to take it home with her! (I'll call it christmas and bday present for her)...

so i will stick with the old sony and my 16MB's for another couple of months and then invest in a whole new camera... I'm thinking 12-15K baht, any suggestions? I'm not a photo expert so I don't need all the bells and whistles....

  3. may have just come across my answer after a couple of hours googling... it seems that this older camera can only handle memory sticks up to 128MB. But it recommends buying a special Memory Stick that has two sides of 128MB... has anybody come across these in Thailand? Would I pick one up fairly easily at the Mall?

the camera was given to me so i can't complain too much out it being old... out of interest if I were to go out and buy a new camera would you chose the Ixus or the Exillim?

  4. I've got a Sony Cybershot DSC-P7 with a lousy 16MB memory stick. The size of the memory has bugged me for quite some time so I decided to go bigger and I purchased a new 1GB memory stick (sony brand). But I've come across a problem, my camera doesn't recognise the card, it says stick error... it's the right size and brand and it all seems to fit nicely, i've tried formatting etc but those options don't even appear as there is a stick error....

i've heard perhaps that there is a problem with the older cybershots and the newer memory sticks... does anybody have any info on this?

  5. hi sbk, he is Thai, but most of his relatives have passed away... it would be a small wedding, we've made a list of 60 incl my family from home... i just thought that reception costs would be more affordable out here and it would mean that i could keep my list down to only those few that i really want to come.... but the more I think about it, the more I want to just head off for the weekend and come back married.... is it selfish to have a wedding just so you get a truck load of presents?! :o

  6. Hello all,

my lovely other half and I are engaged and plan to marry toward the end of next year (the cool season I think). My folks back in Aus are hoping that we come up with some decisions regarding the reception, ceremony etc.

I (or I guess I should say we!) have been thinking about an outdoor gig in either Kanchanaburi or Chiang Mai (we both prefer these regions to the beach) and I thought I would just ask around TV to see if anyone has come across any great wedding/reception locations in the LOS....

also, just out of interest (and I am speaking to those mainly who are married to a Thai, or who are Thai married to a farang) what style of wedding did you opt for?

    Cheers

  7. Kanchanburi is right up there as one of my very favourite places for a quick trip out of the city... i took my folks there when they were over, popped into a guesthouse (can't remember the name, I am sure they all do it) and told them what it was I wanted to do... he organised the whole thing for about 300 baht each... from memory we went elephant riding, bamboo rafting, the train ride, the war museums (incl the one up at Hellfire Pass) and a waterfall - oh and there was a side trip to his camp where we went on a flying fox!!

nothing fancy, but a great day out....

  8. I came over to BKK as a single woman and while it did take some work and effort on my part, I have found a great bunch of friends through netball, diving and work and I don't find Bangkok all that bad for single chicks.

Also, not all teachers out here work for peanuts. I am a qualified secondary maths and science teacher and my salary is more than enough to live off, save and have a good time. Don't try to compare the baht salary to a UK/US salary, that wont attract anyone to teaching out here!

I know that the ladies who peruse this forum have all sorts of employment backgrounds, I would say that there is work to be found for those who try hard enough to find it....

  9. not really fair of me to ask a personal question and not answer it myself....

i've never gone beyond the regular bikini wax and i've never had it done professionally here in LOS (prefer the pain and privacy of a DIY job)

have always wanted to go brazillian but my partner is dead against it... could suprise him with it but it might end up a dry month :o:D

  10. this may have been covered before but it's midnight, i've had too much coffee and i need something to do... don't think i've ever started a thread before.....

A couple of questions for all ladies about bikini/brazillian/hollywood waxing.

Are there any ladies who swear by it?

Where are the best places in LOS to go?

    What do partners say?

  11. hi there swampy,

I can't say I know a whole lot about the province of Songkla and if it is considered to be safe or unsafe. Obviously things are a little insecure in the deep south at the moment but I wouldn't think there was any danger of heading up to Surat and then hopping over to an island for a week or so. You wouldn't have much trouble finding solo travellers once on Ko Samui/Ko PhanNgan and it would a great shame if you didn't get out and see these islands.

Having said all of this, your cousin would no doubt be a whole lot more aware of the safety issues so it might not be the best to take the advice from a Bangkokian!

  12. sbk, i am beginning to think that my boyf, well actually i should start calling him my fiance, is completely superstitious! he is totally convinced that the stepping over the fishing rod thing is REALLY bad, and not the done thing... perhaps he is in his own little world!

but he is relaxing on most things nowadays, he lets the maid wash my underwear and it can be hung freely outside for the neighbours to look at.

i have also seen him turn the volume up and down on the tv with his big toe when the remote is that inch out of reach....

    :D:o

  13. I made the mistake of walking slightly close to the top of my husbands head once whilst he was laying on the floor watching tele. I got a lecture on the whole, top of the head/feet thing & is basically as others have said. The top pf the head is the most sacred part of the body & feet, underwear etc are unclean. Stepping over people is also bad.

    i've had similar lectures Boo!

stepping over people is bad, equally bad is stepping over fishing rods (and if you've ever been to a thai fishing park its a difficult task along the bank ofthe lake trying to aviod the occassional hop over a fishing rod!)

i've also been in trouble for washing socks in the same load as anything else, although i have managed to make him see the impracticality (sp?) of this. can't hang your jocks above the other clothes on the line.... again all about the high/low thing....

i also get told regularly to stop using my 'farang hands', ie my feet when i use them to switch off the fan, move an object etc...

  14. Aussie visa was a breeze to get for my Thai b/f last July. Didn't question anything and got it within four days.

That is good news! Will just keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best..... he's going to apply at the aussie visa application centre in bangkok (it is seperate from the embassy), anybody know how the initial appliaction process takes? will he just drop of the mound of paperwork and leave them with it, or will he need to hang around and answer questions for a while?

  15. well now i am really worried.... anyone know if the aussie tourist visa is as tough as the US? my b/f is applying for a visa soon, i think we have everything covered, pics, letters, letters of support from my parents in Aus, proof of funds, work to come back to..... anyone had experience with the aussie tourist visa app process?

  16. I am looking into renting a car (or truck) for a couple of months. I have heard that you can rent for as cheap as 10,000 baht per month, but i have no idea if this is true or not.

does anyone have any information or contact details for long term car rental in (or around) BKK?

  17. hi there, just wondering if you folks have any info on the party boats that cruise and disturb the banks of the river Kwae? I was thinking of getting a group together and hiring a boat for an evening of shenanigans... any ideas, thoughts or suggestions?

(is it really dangerous? My boyf seems to think that people regularly die from being too drunk and falling in....)

  18. sorry to ask a question that has no doubt been asked a million times....

my 90 days is up in two weeks and my slack school is yet to get the paperwork together for my work permit. what situation will i be in if my work permit isn't applied for soon? how do i extend my visa? is it a border run (if i get a re-entry permit) or do i need to visit an embassy in another country....

    cheers

note: i got the visa from singapore over the new year.... i'm australian, have a job at a school....

  19. lol, I just realized that we might end up with a tie  :o  :D  so far it is one :D

Just wanna try the inside, already been outside.

i voted for outside coz i've been inside, but i'll be more than happy if its outside.... (i had a silly conversation about bellybuttons once that went something like what i just said....) :D
